And now...

Rio Governer declares "public calamity" over financial crisis.

But of course, they say it wont affect the games.

I haven't really been paying close attention to the Olympics this year, but I keep hearing stories about Rio's water being poisonous, the atheletes being robbed or assaulted by criminals and the police, the sports facilities and dormitories being absolute garbage, etc.

Can somebody explain why on earth this shit show is actually allowed to continue? (Beyond corruption)

Panem et circenses!
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

Well, that would make sense for the Brazilian government. Why are the rest of us taking part?

This looks like it's going to be a shitshow/dumpster fire of an Olympics.

I have to admit that I am now far more curious about a whole bunch of events I would never have bothered watching, if only for the trainwreck viewing.

Can you imagine the screams of horror if a rowing crew capsizes?

India frankly doesn't value athletics the same way other countries do. Same for Nepal.

It's weird and I don't like it, but that's the way the culture is. Plus the meta culture represses women from participating often.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Nepali flag bearer had a weird name. Phupu is your father's sister (your aunt). Not a first name.

Well, Canada just gave top seed/world champion in Volleyball Brazil a run for their money. They lost, but not by much and it was super close both sets. That's damned good for the 24th seed against the top ones.

I talked with my father about this and he says up in the mountains, people don't see names the same way. Some people even regularly change names or maybe the records get written down wrong and they just go along with it. I'd known a little bit of it, due to having some dealings with a Sherpa family friend who changed his name.

Not sure if this is the case with Phupu Lamu Khatri, the judo player, but it was interesting to talk about for a bit.

Van Vleuten is doing relatively okay. It has been an awful year in cycling for the Dutch with various falls in the Tour de France and other races as well, so when she went down it was like bloody deja vu. Luckily Van der Breggen came through for us. First Dutch gold is on the board!

Looks like Canada Men's volleyball just shellacked the US team in 3 straight sets! What an exciting game!
