What is it about Pat Rothfuss?

I finally read NotW. It was fine. I enjoyed it, am looking forward to reading the next one, but I didn’t love it like many people do. It felt very dated. He relies on so many well-worn fantasy tropes (cough cliches) and does it well, but when you add it all together it seems a bit like a bit much. Fantasy has moved on I think, Rothfuss is a bit old-fashioned. Of course the book was written years ago, and so is a product of its time, but still.

For me it's still one of the most disappointing books I've read. Considering how beloved it is, it was a straight 5/10 for me with no reason to progress past the first book. I dunno, maybe if I'd read it as a teen I'd have been in love, but Steve had already stolen my heart by then, and then subjected it to an Azath House.

Also Book 2 should have been called "Sojourn for Half a Book with Fairy Seks; No sign of the villain yet"

I haven't read them since book 2 came out (2011) and haven't wanted to re-read until it looked like Doors of Stone was imminent. I have wondered if with the time elapsed I might end up feeling like this by the time I get round to them again - although I enjoyed them first time through.

I had the same impression. And also like RBB above, I am not sure I would enjoy the first book if I read it again now.

So I'm probably about 3/4 through NOTW and while I've mostly enjoyed it, Rothfuss seriously needs to edit his writing down and not describe EVERYTHING that happens. I was loving it at the university but I've now followed Kvothe wandering about the countryside with Denna watching the dragoncow eat trees for far too long. It just seems a bit pointless. I was all for reading WMF but I'm not sure now. When does he become a badass swordsman and stuff instead of just a cocky 15 year old who is good at everything but can't get a break because he's poor?

So I finished NotW and I did, on the whole, enjoy the story. Kvothe is seemingly some kind of wish fulfilment Ubermensch that can do anything and knows everything. I'll admit for a while I wanted to quit due to the very boring bit in the middle with Kvothe and Denna mooching around in the countryside but it ended well and left me wanting to find out more (like when he starts being a good swordsman etc)
Debating whether to listen to WMF. Rothfuss is definitely not some insanely good writer in the way that some of his fans seem to promote him as but it was a well told story on the whole...
The narrator for the earbook was very good it must be said.

Seriously Tiste, how do you not milk the dragoncow thing for all its worth?
