I have been fascinated by the creations of Varandas the Jaghut. They are quite powerful and usually have a specific purpose along with a dose of insanity or, at the very least, unbalanced. We know that the Bole Brothers are creations of Varandas. The Nachts are as well i think. I have a sneaking suspicion that Leff and Scorch may be puppets as well-they are much like the Boles. What are your thoughts? Why did he create them? How many? Who do you thjnk might be a puppet whonhas grown into somethjng/someone else?

Mmh, my thought was that the Bole brothers we meet in the main series are not directly creations of Varandas, but the descendants of his creations. Other than that, I have no idea. Seems to me that Scorch & Leff are a homegrown Darujhistan stupidity, but that's just me. Never liked them much

All puppets were not special, only those Varnadas did soul shifting into.
Also they probably had ability to reproduce more of the same species. As Puckstein said, the Boles and nachts are probably descendants of these.
What souls did he use? I wonder.
If we have to speculate on why he did this, it could be that Varnadas was a scientist who might be experimenting with soul shifting. Or he could be just doing it for fun.

Also no way to know how far the 'present' Boles and Nachts have changed from whatever he originally designed.

The Sech'kellyn in Lees of Laughter's End are Jaghut creations, though it's not specified whose they are. They also seem to be the originals, not descendants, as they're still a bit more artificial than the Boles and Naughts.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

I have a crazy theory that Hairlock was a puppet of some kind, even before QB put him in a literal doll. Could be Varandas' (or QB's own creation). Some reasons:
- That name, I mean seriously.
- He is always sweating, it's weird.
- He seems to use Kurald Galain or some other mysterious kind of darkness/shadow magic.
- He knew to ask QB for a soul-shift.
- He survived (for a while) being cut in half.

I dont remember the Sech'kellen, i will have to re-read that book.
Apparently i will have to re-read Hairlock's appearances. I do remember him swearing a lot or just being plain nasty but i didnt realize he had some glandular issues, lol. This is awesome! Thanks for the thoughts thus far my fellow Malazans!

Ok, so arent the Boles descendants of jaghut creations as well? Scorch and Leff fend off a hound of shadow and they get extremely ornery around certain demonic villainous creatures. I remember some Bole brothers who reacted similarly to a demonic entity. And you think about it, the Boles (Mott iregulars) typify the madness of the insane jaghut (Crump).
