Dessembrae fend. Baruk. GotM

I can't find this one, Andorion. Any chance of narrowing it down to a chapter maybe?

Chapter 17. When Mammot is unconscious as he is probing the Tyrant's barrow.

Also another Dessembrae related one: Dessembrae be praised. Kruppe, GotM, chapter 7.

Karsa exclaims, "Faces in the Rock!" several times throughout TtH.

I can't find any of these. Many times the Faces in the Rock get mentioned, but I can not find the phrase as an exclamation. Do you remember in what context Karsa used them?

I think it was in context with Dassem. TtH is a long read away at the moment, but when I get to it, I will try to post a couple of these

Yeah, he definitely says it at least once during the climactic battle scene. Don't have the book with me right now.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

If you are looking for the most used curse, along with Gods Below, it will probably be Hoods Breath. Its everywhere.

Feners Hoof. Mulch. MoI. Chapter 11 I think.

It occurred to me that whom people swear by can be a great indicator. Which era did they live in, and who do they believe in for salvation or fear for retribution for example. Or... what group they belong to. Even in disguise, in the heat of an engagement, an expression might give away a clue to the identity of the person using it.

Which is why I am not just collection the expressions but also who used the phrase. K'rul saying "By the Light" and someone trapped in Dragnipur using "Gethols' breath" were what got me interested. Both are exclamations that are not heard amongst the Malazan soldiers for example.

Looking up that quote, I re-read the run-up to it... that scene was incredibly powerful and ... horrible. Still has the same impact on every re-read.

I seem to recall "Hood's copper balls on an anvil" in one of the later books, but maybe I'm confusing it with the marble ones on MoI. Poor Hood...

Sorry for lack of page referencing and not sure if it was mentioned yet, but I recalled a lot of 'Abyss' usage as well from MoI. Just did a check and it is a popular one:

"By the Abyss" - Kruppe, Gruntle, Stonny Menackis, Murillio, Quick Ben, the Mhybe, Hetan, Whiskeyjack, Paran, Caladan Brood, Crone, Silverfox, Rath'Beru, Rath'D'rek, Rath'Burn, Lady Envy
"Abyss below" - Paran
"Abyss take me/you/them all/us/the rest" - Gruntle, Quick Ben, Paran, Seerdomin, Stonny
"Sing me the Abyss" - Kallor, Gruntle
"Go to the Abyss" - Stonny Menackis
"Get the Abyss out of there" - Paran

And in DG:

"Hood's Abyss" - Fiddler
"Every god in the Abyss" - Fiddler
"Abyss below" - Lull, Shadowthrone
"By the Abyss" - Kalam

MT:

"By the Abyss" - the Guardian

BH:

"Abyss below" - Hellian, Fiddler, Mappo
"Abyss take me/us" - Banashar, Gesler, Keneb, Fiddler, Bottle, Paran, Kalam, Mappo
"Thank the Abyss" - Telorast
"By the Abyss" - Curdle, Rythe Bude, Braven Tooth
"Puckered gods of the Abyss" - Gesler

RG:

"By the Abyss" - Bugg, the Errant
"Abyss below"- Bugg

etc....

I was secretly hoping that a pattern would emerge, for instance 'Abyss below' being a very Malazan phrase and 'Abyss take me' a seven Cities curse, but there doesn't appear to be any culturally entrenched Abyss swearing.
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.
