I thought this might be a topic which a few here might enjoy ;)

In the books the characters use a lot of Malazan specific phrases. It is interesting to note that some of them are actually giving us quite a lot of clues. A lot of the Bridgeburners will use Hood as inspiration... 'Hood's Bones', 'Hood's Curse', 'Hood's Breath'... whereas there is someone trapped in Dragnipur who swears by 'Gethol's Breath' instead. K'rul on the other hand swears 'By Light's Wild Mane' which immediately looks to be inspired by a much earlier time.

Here is the list of what I have compiled sofar:

http://malazan.wikia...ki/Exclamations

Do you know of others? For example, I seem to remember Ruthan Gudd using one which made me think that there was a clue to his origin contained within, but can't find it.

And if you are reading this.... I have just posted a few other topics where I could use a bit of help *pretty, please, with sugar on* :D

I seem to recall some with 'Fener' as well. Will keep an eye out.

A few 'Fener's tusks' ones, I seem to remember. Not sure if it is technically a curse or more an admonition of shock/surprise, but those distinctions are tricky.

Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

Yup, at the urinal. He wears a robe, so he has to pull it way up to pee, as opposed to trouser wearers who just have to nudge em open/down.

Well, I suppose I should have expected that the topic would eventually encourage people to lower the tone!!!

It may be disappointing, but I am not just looking for obscenities but any Malazan specific exclamations and if you could tell me where to find them slightly more specific than just the book title, that would really help ;)

Does "Gods Below" count? (Samar Dev, TTH, C23)

Then there's a literal butt-load of variants with Hood involved:

Or "Hood knows" (Gruntle, TTH, C13)

"Hood damned" (Antsy, TTH, C13)
"Hoods hoary arms" (Blend, TTH, C15)
"Hood forbid" (Antsy, TTH, C15)
"Hood take you" (Samar Dev, TTH, C20)
"Hood's soiled trousers" (Stormy, BH, C8)
"Hood's bones" (Barathol, BH, C12)

And more specifically Hood's Balls
"Hood pluck his balls" (Urko Crust, BH, C4)
"Hood's balls" (Gesler, BH, C7)
"Hood squeeze my balls" (Quick Ben, BH, C15)
"Hood's balls skewered on a spit" (Cuttle, HOC, C8)
And sort of related... not really an exclamation but... "[I'd swear it on] Hood's own foreskin" (Hurlochel, BH, C15)

And then there's the (very occasional) curse that doesn't involve Hood
"By the mother" (Endest Silann, TTH, C12)

I'll keep my eyes peeled, I'm reading through TTH and OST in the next little while.

Thanks for all the quotes and especially for adding references, Dadding!

Keep them coming :)

Edit: yes, and 'God's Below' counts very much. It is exactly the sort of phrase I am looking for.

Torvald uses "Hood's dripping tongue" in Chapter Three of HoC.

Also, "Beru fend!", and "Beru bless you". Yeah, I'm rereading HoC.

Though, I have to say, my favourite malazan exclamation is "Gods below", it's just kind of all-purpose!

I am not sure if this qualifies as a curse, but it's pretty impressive in graphical details.

‘You, sapper,’ the Barghast said, ‘are the scum beneath a pebble in a stream running through a field of sickly pigs.’

You are right, not quite what I had in mind, but thank you very much for digging it out :) This is what I would call cursing with style - how people should curse - not just f this and f that!

I can't find this one, Andorion. Any chance of narrowing it down to a chapter maybe?
