^^This, and makes sure you dodge yourself behind him (past that smaller arm) and use a big swing (R2) with your axe/hammer/blade whatever you have in your right hand. The extra rage he gets after the half health is a visible thing too...there will be like a red mist around him...when this happens back way off and wait till his attack return to normal...but watch for him if he jumps...and if he does just start roll dodging around so he doens't land on you (he probably still will). And make sure you have a full slate of blood vials to keep you refreshed during the fight when you aren't able to hit him back.

What stats are you levelling? Just make sure at this point that it's increasing your damage output or endurance - it's way more helpful to be able to keep dodging than to have more health, as if he hits you you're dead anyway.

From what I remember.. get round behind him. If you get too far away he'll leap or charge. If too close he'll swipe or even grab you. Bait him by getting near.. then evade round the opposite side as he attacks. Once behind him, hit him once or twice but quickly - r2 will drain stamina and be slower. Then duck back before he turns.

If you can get into a pattern of dodge and hit, or dodge and take a health potion, you can win even if you're not dealing much damage. Don't rely on molotovs, learn his moves. And you will, each time he kills you! When you eventually read each move, and dodge the right way, and manage to land enough hits, you'll be jumping when you eventually do beat him.

Got my own three Yarnham Shadows to deal with now..
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

I'm playing with the Cane (and a tophat because why wouldn't you wear a tophat?). The Cane has a B rating for Dexterity Skill. Which means that in order to effectively increase your damage you need to increase Skill. Strenght is all but irrelevant. I'd focus on Endurance and Skill until you get them both to 20, and then see where you want to go from there. Maybe you've found some kind of equipment at that point which provides incentive for other stat-increases.

If you continue with the cane, you need to upgrade your skill - you'll see the difference in blue on the weapon slots. Strength will do it too but slightly less each level as it's not its governing attribute.

Each weapon has a 'minimum requirement', and a letter from A - E underneath each attribute (strength/skill etc) which lets you know which will give you a damage bonus.
('S' means super effective!)

This bonus shouldn't ones be underestimated - in the long run, it's just as useful as upgrades. If you commit to boosting a stat early, like strength or skill, and then later find a weapon that has an S in that stat, you get a massive bonus - far more than if you've levelled everything equally.

Bloodborne might be different, I don't know.. but it's using the same system so far. I've been using the Saw Spear as my primary weapon, but I started with the Cane; I'm now boosting Strength more than skill, and have upgraded the Spear to +5? (I need chunks now which I haven't discovered yet)

This might not seem immediately helpful for the Cleric; it will make a difference if you start to boost your damage output though.

I've found several weapons since I picked the Cane, but the Cane is just so wonderfully versatile, with the whip being by far the most efficient mode for crowd Control I've found as of yet.

The notebook is for leaving messages for other players.

I've not used it on quick items, but if you choose it in main menu you can write a message and leave it.. I've left a couple at the beginning of shortcuts that I nearly missed.

Don't worry about cost - it seems to fit the area you should be in. I've just finished the forbidden woods and you get an absolute ton of echoes there for even the easiest stuff.

There's even a brute near the lamp that you can backstab for 4000 echoes a pop.

Go kick him off.

I just got a ride in a Carriage, drawn by Undead horses, to what looks like Dracula's frickin Castle. Awesome!

I tried but he's facing me and waiting for me when I get up the ladder...and he's fast and kills me

He did me a few times too. On the plus side, you can speed run to the ladder without fighting anyone.

Get some bullets. Get up the ladder, straight over the top, lock on and try to get as far forward as you can before he moves, and start blazing away. Three shots of mine were enough to knock him back over the edge, which kills him.

Don't worry about the levelling; you should be able to take him pretty early on. You can always try Gascoigne first and go back for the Cleric.

You should see a difference in how much damage you're doing per hit, or an immediate increase in stamina or whatever though?

Each time you get to a new lamp you get more echoes per kill in that area so you might find it easier to do that way round.

All I have to say is, goddamn Spiders.

Fuck.

So the Blood-Starved Beast has now beat my ass 4 times.

The kicker? The best way to fight him is to buy "Pungent Blood cocktails" at 2000 blood echoes a piece. You apparently need at least 4 or 5 for the fight...and you need as many antidotes as you can carry as he spits VILE poison that will suck up your HP like its draining out of a sink. Both these items have to be on quick-slots and you ened to toggle them...AND you should have some molotovs just for good measure. And on top of that you gotta throw the pungent blood cocktails to one side (he goes after them) and then you gotta run up behind him and slice away but I can't get off more than one or two swings before he turns and attacks again.

So either the cocktails don't work well, or I'm doing something wrong. At any rate, every time that fucker beats me I've wasted 10,000 worth of pungent blood cocktails....so every time I wanna go try again I gotta go farm first.

He's irritating as hell. I want to beat him so I can get a badge that will allow me to get the Ludwig sword.

The blood cocktails are optional. I didn't find them to be any use so didn't bother buying more than a couple of them.

Yeah I got fed up getting killed trying with the cocktails - they're quite handy if you need space to heal though.

That final poison stage is the worst. Even wearing something with high poison resistance (Gascoignes attire is pretty good) makes only a bit of difference.

I've just got a weapon called a... reiterpallasch? Anyone used it yet? I'm still using my saw spear as the short range is quick and with the runes it's doing the job. I don't want to spend 20k on something I'm not going to like.

Also I can't seem to kill this damn spider at the moment - the combination of blue beam attack and horde of leaping offspring is just overwhelming me. I can get it down to half before I get hit by some aoe attack or other without getting close.

Also BK, that's awesome - I wish I could have had an audience for just one of my boss victories.

I've been known to scare our dog as he snoozes beside me when I either die by Boss...or gain victory over one...by shouting and scaring the bejeezus outta him.

' Fuck Not Again!' also makes my cat lift her head to see what the fuss is.

Probably not the best timing QT but you remember Arthur? He can help in the fight against the Blood Starved Beast. You know, unless you, er, killed him earlier?

Mind you I just totally slipped up with an npc. I've been advising people to seek sanctuary in the Cathedral ward area, the first one was was this old lady, whose been sitting in a chair for a while now. Well, I just went back, and there's just a big blood stain there.. turns out one of the other ones I sent back there probably should have been killed instead..

Oh snap, I've got that old lady there too. But I've not run across anyone else to send there yet.

Well if you find a guy that looks suspiciously like an undead crouching over some bodies (yeah I should have guessed!) maybe don't invite him back! I attacked him at first, but them realised I could talk to him - I think I just gave him a free lunch.

Sick game!
