Not long now, we could use a thread for this.

I'm starting to look forward to it, it's really starting to look more like a successor to Demon's Souls.

I'm hoping for the style of Demons, with the flow and depth of Dark Souls, and the improved visuals of the latest version of DS2.

Duel weapons, no shield. Long and short blade have different speeds and damage - or shotgun, or torch, which might actually be required.

The lack of shield means a lot of evasion, which was always my favorite ds tactics anyway. I've preordered.. I only do that for these games, I can't help it.

I've heard tell that there are shields in the game, though you won't be able to use them like in DS, the emphasis is on offence. Was in one of the more recent videos.

Ah, it does look good, doesn't it.

I still haven't played a game that I've totally enjoyed since Dark Souls.

Bloodborne looks like it's taken DS's a bit further, in a good way. Fewer superfluous weapons, large open world levels that link up, and that choice of whether cash in and upgrade, or press on to the next save at the risk of losing... everything.

Looking forward to Friday.

I own it now, and have played about an hour. I figured it would be a little easier at first since I've fought my way through both of the Dark Souls, but the first hour has been surprisingly hard. Either I've missed something, or the distance between the Bloodborne equivalent of bonfires is huge. God damn wolves.

I really like the atmosphere so far. I mean, I'm only an hour in, but from my point of view the player character is a vampire like villain, and the "monsters" terrified innocents. Except for the wolves. Fuck those things.

Yeah the lamps are supposed to be further apart and less frequent than the bonfires, certainly from DS 2.

I think it's more about unlocking shortcuts back, like Demons?

Do you have the ability to regain health through attacking from the start or is that something you gain later? And is stamina control as important as in Souls?

Fromsoft games like the Souls series are anything but hack n'slash. In fact, that's what will get you killed quick. I'm certainly looking forward to the change of pace from DS to Bloodborne though and will definitely be picking it up on Friday.

I like the look of all the transformable weapons. Less but better functioning weapons seems a good idea. In DS there was tons of weapons but loads of them were shit, and go unused. I collected them all in DS and DSII but found myself falling back on the ones I favoured.

Gargoyle's Halberd, Claymore and Chaos Blade were my go-to weapons for the Souls series.

Mwah ha ha, just started last night... after a lengthy system update.

First impressions... well, the ability to save on the character creation screen is a bonus. I wish all rpgs had this. Nothing worse than sitting through an intro only to find that the skin tone you chose looks wrong, face too thin etc, and having to reload the entire start. Plus the inclusion of specs and scars.. even some steam punky looking eyewear.

I just thought I'd have an explore to start - and it really is odd not having a shield. First rule of Souls after all. First weapon I chose is the cane/whip thing, as it just looked a bit different. Stab stab *taps on cobbles to transform* instant blade whip. Looks great.

Despite the lack of shield there seem to be more combat options to play with. There's the weapon transform, but also the sidestep/roll/heavy and light attacks depending on whether locked on or not.

Well I died pretty much straight away, as I underestimated the strength of a fat blade wielding guy. Went back to get souls (sorry blood echoes) and they were gone.. yep, he ate them or something. So now I have to kill him again to get them back.

It looks amazing, the sound is creepy and it's got bags of atmosphere.. and as it's the direct successor to DS' s from Miyazaki, I'm expecting some killer level design.

I'm going to savour this.. no spoilers from the internet now I have actually have it

Yeah, I got it yesterday and have played an hour or so. Not even made it to the first boss!

Still getting used to the regain mechanic, my DS reflexes keep making me roll out of there when I take damage.

Character creation is better but still terrible, I think I preferred DS2 character creator but it's definitely better than the original DS. It's just abit annoying how the only body shape is an emaciated stick man. Even set to "very burly" he makes Mo Farah look like the hulk.

My only real mechanic gripe is not getting replenishing blood-vials on death. Use them all on a boss then die, then what? Spend 10-20 minutes farming them back before you can make another attempt at it?

That said, I'm enjoying it loads, brings back the proper sense of fear when there's so far between checkpoints. I picked the cane too, thinking it was most like a DS straight sword, turning into a whip is great for taking on mobs at a time.

The character creation has so many colours and faces that I can't see ever being used. That said I've got a pretty scary, hooked nosed demon hunter now. That hunter coat is nice too. I started playing on the basis that I'll probably just start again from scratch tonight - it made me a bit less cautious, and I used up a lot of molotovs because it didn't matter. I need to practice with the pistol more I think.

I really like the way that you accumulated blood from fighting - I was getting a good covering at one point before I died.

Well I finally managed to level up, after what was probably way too long spent in the first area.

The sound effects are great, if really creepy. At one point I had to double check the baby monitor as I thought the crying was coming from upstairs..

Multiplayer in the conventional sense is pretty limited. There's co-op and PvP invasions. You use up a certain stat called insight to initiate online play but it runs out and can be replenished from defeating bosses and using consumables. I've had a lot of fun helping people in coop though, just ring a wee bell then I'll get summoned into someone's game. I had to use coop to beat Father Gascoigne, he was hard as fuck!

What class/weapons are you using? I started as a Cruel Fate. Love the level design, it has that depth from peaks to sewers and beyond, so you get a huge concentration of stuff in a small area.

I got totally lost last night, trawling through buildings and sewers, opening gates and accumulating about 3000 echoes with no lamp in sight until I ran into a cleric mini boss that had one behind it.

I'm flipping between the cane weapon and bone spear thing I found in the sewer, which i used to kill the cleric.

I went with military veteran, the Hunters Axe is my main weapon, love the halberd moveset. I've also got a Stake Driver which is pretty awesome. I saved up 20,000 echoes to buy a sword that combines with its sheath to form a greatsword but found it really underwhelming. I just beat the blood starved beast and exploring the next area, something workshop.my fears about the blood vials are alleviated, I've had the maximum for ages and a vault full of them.

Are upgrade materials as scarce as in DS? I'm kind of torn between upgrading what I have and holding out and upgrading something I might find later.

I already wasted some on something I'll probably ditch soon.

The most basic one that takes stuff to +3 are pretty common. The ones for higher levels are twin bloodstones I think, I've only gotten them from the equivalent of twinkling titanite bugs, I've only found two of them. Just wait till you get to old Yharnam, it's awesome!

Just got to get past father Gascoigne. Had a couple of shots at him and got him down to half, but that beast form is a killer. I used the music box a couple of times to stun him but it doesn't give you long.
