wasn't thinking entirely clearly yesterday afternoon.

Battle instructions


Ancient ship -- Go until I have 1 health left. If I haven't managed to get the ancient to 1 health at that time, I'll consider retreating.


Ancient homeworld -- Pause and await further instruction only if the ancient manages to destroy 1 of my 3 cruisers.


My understanding of ancient targeting rules is that they will go for my INT first, right? They can kill it with 1 shot so there is no way their first hit will impact a cruiser.

If the ancient scores two hits in one combat round (ie 2 5's etc) then it will destroy your cruiser first as it has 4 damage to assign and the cruiser is the largest ship it can destroy. If it only scores one hit however it will target your interceptor first.

And I was just about to state that my odds against gnaw weren't that horrible and then I go and don't even hit him even after 5 rolls. Thought I would damage him at least once and maybe twice if I was lucky.
I don't know what I'm doing but it sounds good.

One question - shouldn't there be two rolls for the interceptors? There were two of them, but I only see one roll.

EDIT: Never mind, I see it now, was reading wrong. Well this pretty much completely fucks me over.

Second EDIT: My interceptors have a +1 from the computer, shouldn't the one that rolled a 4 hit given this?

7/16 of that ancient's rolls were 5s or 6s. You can't beat that kind of horror.

Yeah it was always going to be an uphill battle when your interceptors didn't get a hit in and then were summarily destroyed, but those ancients had some monster rolls.
