Is the video a canadian's strongly worded message about videos not being available in Canada? Cause I'd get on board with that

This Rednexican is looking forward to it.

This is really sad because it says that the video is not available in my country...

That's a bummer man. I think there might be a way around it. Maybe google has an answer?

The message must be so strong they don't want other canadians to repeat it.

My wife was rattled because she was out with our daughter, her sister and her kids a number of blocks south at the same time as this occurred at Y&F...if he'd chosen to do this a bit further south....ugh, I don't want to think about it.

My best friend works five minutes from the site. He's fine, but I admit to being quite worried about him before that since this happened at lunch time, on a nice warm spring day...so many would have been out walking.

I know, I was out walking yesterday at lunch cause it was such a nice day.
They're saying it wasn't part of an organized attack or a terrorist group but it still makes me nervous going forward. I was thinking about it when walking from the GO to my office building this morning just looking at all the cars and people.
Fucking tragic, you don't expect this kind of stuff here.

New reports seem to peg this guy (though a social media post where he praised that incel asshole in California before the attack) as one of those Incel nut jobs who feels that the world slighted him for not providing women who want to sleep with him.

This guy sounds like he was a sociopath with serious mental health issues.

And yeah, it's hard to walk down the street after something like this and feel completely safe. I mean I know my brain says "it's probably fine, this was the tragic and horrendous anomaly that it appears to be, committed by one lone asshole"...and not have a tiny part worry still.

And this after the last few months of grisly discoveries related to Ontario's (possibly Canada as a whole?) worst serial killer ever?

It's all hard to take.

That said, the EXEMPLARY police officer (Ken Lam, 7 year veteran with the TPS) who took him down and arrested him stayed calm, cool, and collected and didn't lose his cool once...he should get some kind of commendation. THAT is brave police work. Staring down a psychopath after he committed a heinous crime...with just stern words. Amazing.

I saw that earlier, pretty bizarre. Seems like he wanted the cop to shoot him, it's amazing that he didn't. I'm sure he wouldn't have gotten in trouble if he had but it's good to see him take the guy down non-lethally, especially with all the shit going on with cops shooting people.

There a saying the unexamined life is not worth living. While that may be true, i've been unhappy ever since i've read this and "incel" has been brought to my attention.

Like i can understand religious fundamentalism. I can understand the roots of ISIS, Hamas etc... It's stupid but its understandable.

This though.... LIKE FOR PETES SAKE WAKE UP. WOMEN DON'T OWE YOU ANYTHING. They are people, with eyes, hands, organs, dimensions, senses affections and passions. Fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means, warmed and cooled by the same summer and winter. They are, to borrow Kant's wording, Rational Free Agents with their own dignity and individuality. If you can't get laid, and you think theres a problem with society, that's squarely on you. Fix your shit, fix your life and get on with it. To go on killing people because of this... Its sickening.

I could go on but i feel coherence would suffer greatly.

The incel thing is disgusting, but i suspect this guy was mentally off and that was 'just' the particular thing he fixated on.
His great strike at the chads and staceys of the world was to drive a van into a random crowd and then attempt suicide by cop. Hardly the bold statement of a righteous crusader or whatever.

People who attended school or work with him seem to indicate some level of Aspergers. I think there was probably mix of things going on in that bastards head to make him do something as truly this horrific.

Incompetent suicide attempt, I might add.

Should've brandished a knife if he actually wanted to die.

I honestly don't know what to say. I mean, I get the whole insecurity thing, completely warped perceptions of how social life is supposed to work, etc.

But lashing out at the entire innocent world like that? I can't comprehend that. That takes a level of megalomania I just can't imagine.

It's really interesting to see how people are all blaming the internet for this. I read an article earlier saying that 4chan and reddit are to blame for radicalizing him.
I guess it could be kind of true, on one hand the internet is great for meeting people with similar interests, like this forum where everyone likes the malazan world and we discuss it, but on the other hand if those similar interests are harmful, like this incel group, it can cause larger problems. I suppose it's possible that if this guy was spending lots of time on those forums he may consider his attitude and thoughts "normal" and feel more justified doing what he did when being encouraged. Once those thoughts are normalized I would imagine it'd be very hard to get someone like him the help he needed.
I still don't think it's fair to say that those sites are responsible for what he did but being encouraged may have been a factor.

Well, the Internet isn't "to blame", but it's impossible to deny that certain ideals that guide major players who've shaped it in recent years have helped give rise to the toxic swamps that bred all the pockets of the alt-right. There has been a certain fetishization of the "marketplace of ideas" that has festered for a long time on reddit, Twitter, FB, and other social media that has allowed a kind of chan-ification of them all. A Nazi spreading his philosophy is just presenting ideas -- no harm done -- but if you tell the Nazi to stfu you are being hostile, not just to the Nazi (which is bad enough) but to the very idea of civil discourse.

It's all debate, it's all just thought experiments played out in real time, to @Jack, or Mark Zuckerberg, or whatever dweebs run reddit -- because they're never going to be the ones on the receiving ends of these ideas (and also they sometimes personally believe them, if in lite forms).

The exception to consequences is money, I guess. So you get recent efforts like Twitter half-heartedly banning some Nazis, you get reddit banning the incels board, etc. But these are all largely decisions of prudence, not doing the right thing. I suspect that there isn't particularly much disagreement anyway, it's just a matter of degree. The incels don't think that differently from any of the perpetrators outed by the #MeToo movement, or neo-Nazis, or Gamergaters, or PUAs, or that dork who got fired from Google, or Trump grabbing women by their genitals, or spurned men shooting up places. It's all the same cancer, and while the Internet didn't cause it, certain permeating cultures have exacerbated it (as have plenty of other media, but there's a turbo-charged feedback loop on the net that the others don't provide). Like, if you wouldn't deny how much right wing talk radio and Fox News have shaped our politics, or how much joining a sex cult shaped Allison Mack's world view, you definitely shouldn't deny how big a role these online social hubs affected the impressionable minds behind these horrible actions.

Reminds me a bit of this, another recent Canadian mass killing: https://twitter.com/...925021409218560

Arg.

Well, the guy is talking and has ZERO remorse, and says....you guessed it....incel shit. He did it because women rejected him.
