Wow, I am surprised this conversation is happening..here. I have made my thoughts clear on this subject many times.

The looting and lack of prosecutions from a small set of people, will begin a finger-pointing that will ultimately change the world in the future. That is all and it will be interesting to see if this gets Internalized, or Externalized. How we choose to deal with it will be telling.

Yes, but you have a tendency to veer into conspiracy territory. You shouldn't be surprised the conversation is happening here; it's a liberal and/or libertarian issue, and this board is very liberal. You are more of a libertarian. The movements have similar roots; the main problem liberals have with libertarians (aside from a tendency toward conspiracy theories) is neoliberalism. In Europe, liberals are usually neoliberals and what we call liberals are usually the worker's party or something. In other words, the difference is our views on economics.

Neocons are neoliberals who like war. Or have found a way to make good money off of it.

True...growing up Mulder was my hero.

Making a point to work on this and present more facts <not a promise!!> I will admit my belief-set if definitely different as has been pointed out, so lately challenging myself. Working on my walls and why I argue certain points in certain manners. The facts are out there. Even more importantly trying to actively apply empathy on why other people argue there sets to understand vs my own opinionated point of view. If that makes sense.

Some comes down opinions and I find myself agreeing more with aspects that get presented. I have no idea where I sit politically anymore. Weird.

This whole thing is ridiculous. I think it is crap that Michael Brown is now being made the poster boy for black injustice. Has anyone seen the picture of him holding a gun pointed at the camera with a folded stack of money in his mouth sitting next to what looks like a bottle of vodka.

Yes, we have all seen it. Have you?

Brown was 6'4" and about 280. Darren Wilson is 6'4" and about 215.

Rachel, you missed just about every element of context to this whole thing.

Is "thug" a species? Like just something you are. Was Adam Lanza a thug? He certainly killed more people than Michael Brown ever did (the count there is, in fact, zero). Are shoplifters en masse thugs? Or just the really tall ones? I'm pretty sure Brown's size has been detailed plenty already (though it's 6'4", and a lot of that 300 lbs is fat); what doesn't get mentioned as often is that Darren Wilson is also 6'4" and over 200 lbs, and is actually in pretty good shape.

That said, perhaps the photo with the gun (down w/ the 2nd Amendment!) and vodka (down with the 21st amendment!) and cash (down with the, uh, US mint?) would be convincing as to Brown's thuggishness...if only it were him:

Wait. What? This point.

Why do you think exactly they rioted? Do you think a certain aspect of society who is mainly not well off socio-economically does not know the world is not "fair". Are we in the belief structure that someone threatened should go straight to lethal force? Are we applying the logic structure that the world is not fair, therefore society just has to sit back and get abused and let this occur again and again.

Think about the last part as this "world not fair" so your answer is to sit on your hands and let it escalate?

I took down my comment. I really shit the bed on the whole picture thing. I should have fact checked my buddy. Also the article I looked up had Brown listed as 6' 5" and 286 pounds. I should have just stuck with writing physically huge like I was going to. There was an article that was liked to in this forum about the police officers story and it asked why a college bound kid would come at an officer and try to steal his gun. What I wrote was sort of a response to that question. I should have read through all of what was written here and also made it clear that I was responding to a question in an article instead of what people were writing here. I do however stand by the whole idea that looting and rioting is like an adult temper tantrum and is not going to solve anything. It only draws the wrong sort of attention to your cause.

The problem is that too many people are too quick to dismiss a cause because of the actions of a small group of people. Michael Brown's parents (his stepdad aside) have been calling for peaceful protest since the beginning, and maintained that position even on the night of the announcement. Speaking of the announcement, why did it come just after sunset? Political staging, perhaps? But back to the point, peaceful protesters in Ferguson have gone so far as to protect local businesses from the violent few with their own bodies.

As MLK said, riots are the voice of the unheard. He was an advocate for non-violence, but he understood the frustration that led to riots.

I would argue too the way the Police handled this situation led to escalation of the community. It's not all one-sided like they just flipped out. The Police were using military equipment, gas and sound devices on a civilian population when it gathered *peacefully*. You might piss off people if you show up to fight.

The interesting thing about the protests the night of the announcement: the usual protesters were, for the most part, not there. The elders, the faith organizations, etc. took the night off.

Yup. That one was clearly caught on tape. The hold he used was clearly illegal. On top of that, it's clearly a situation escalated by the police. Garner sold loosies before, therefore it's grounds to harass him anytime you see him on the street to flex your power position, and when your ego gets dinged you can do whatever you want to him and claim "suspicion". This guy's a murderer.

There were a bunch of stories like this one that got media attention after the Trayvon Martin verdict too. Eventually we spiraled back into despair and all its concomitant apathy. Garner actually happened before Brown and probably contributed to the Ferguson issue getting all the attention that it did.
