What about that Heavy, whats her name, who took out several bodies of that weird tiger lizard soletaken Djem whatever in The Bonehunters?
Neferious Bred?
I believe it was Masan Gilani. I wouldn't really count her though, remember a big theme throughout the books is a long forgotten power (Raest, Dejim Nebrahl) coming back, then finding out that they're not hot shit in a champagne glass, but really cold diarrhea in a dixie cup. Dejim was also near starvation at this point I think.
This topic is difficult to debate, since its near impossible to determine what counts as no warren/ascendency/powers for this purpose. Heres my list of people that we can 100% discount as it has been stated they have some form of power. Icarium, Karsa, Dassem Ultor, Anomander Rake. Whiskeyjack was being thrown around because of the Azath in Malaz City, but to my knowledge we only know for a fact that it affects his longevity, not fighting ability. Same for Crimson Guard, it makes them have longer lives and tougher to hurt, but is it stated that it increases their strength/speed/reaction time? If not then a better skilled fighter would still win, it would just take longer.
My top fighters not from the above list would be Yedan Derryg, Brys Beddict, Spinnock Durav, the best of the Crimson Guard (not sure who wins out here, probably Blues, Skinner, or maybe K'azz), Kallor. Maybe throw Kalam Mekhar in there too, but I'm not sure how well he'd do in a 1v1 duel. He's always seemed to me as an amazing assassin, and a strong fighter, but I wouldn't count him among the top fighters.
Maybe the CG vow only gives them longevity, but even then it makes them extremely tough to kill. A wound that would have killed most people would probably mildly inconvenience a CG. Yedan Derryg is a good point, but since he was part of the Shake Pantheon does that give him some extra power?
That is true about the CG, it does make them extremely tough to kill. However, in a 1v1 duel situation, that doesn't add anything to the fighters skill. To test their skill against each other, I'm assuming that it's just a 1v1 fight in a large room/open area, where the only thing that affects who wins is that persons skill. Assuming Brys Beddict is the better fighter, then whether he was fighting a normal human or a CG who took the vow, he would still win, it would just take longer to kill the CG.
As for Yedan, it's the same thing. We could debate whether or not being part of the Shake Pantheon actually gives him powers, and then after determining that we'd launch into a whole new debate about whether those powers actually help him in a 1v1 fight. For them to do so, I'd imagine those powers would do something like increase his strength, speed, reaction time, etc. Maybe give him some precog type ability like spidey sense. My personal opinion on Yedan is that being the Watch is a hereditary title thats passed down, with no powers coming from it. His badassery, which I consider putting him on the verge or ascendancy, is all from him.
And I've just realized who I've been forgetting: first of all, Leoman of the Flails. He doesn't really have as many feats as the rest of the fighters in this thread, but I remember him being decently skilled in MBoTF, and ICE's books reinforced that. I'm not sure if I'd put him in front of Brys, or Spinnock, but I think due to his unique weapon choice that could possibly give him an advantage.
Second of all: Corabb. Would his whole deal with luck (I was never quite sure on this, does he have Oponns favor or something?) count as a magical enhancement to his fighting?
Finally, it's hard to judge any soldier in this type of contest. Some, like Corabb or Skulldeath (I'm not sure if Skulldeath is the one I'm thinking of, it's the guy whos a prince and thinks Hellian is a princess), are really great fighters in their context, but we've only seen them in squad combat. All the others that have been brought up were fighters on their own. If this series has shown me anything, it's that fighting as a soldier as part of a cohesive unit is completely different from a one on one fight.
I think we might need separate categories in this, people we know aren't influenced by magic at all in their fighting (Spinnock, Brys, Seguleh), and people who we either think they have a connection to magic (Yedan) or we know they have a connection to magic but we're not sure it's influencing their fighting (Anomander, any of the CG).
