When you look at the Wikia, you'll notice that most contributions do not have any source reference. In some cases, people probably added information just from memory. Consequently, it is difficult to go from Wikia to the relevant section in the books and there are mistakes.

Can you help rectify the situation?

Just open any Malazan book on a randam page and check the Wikia entry for what's on it. If you're happy that it's all correct then go to edit page and put the following template

<ref>[[Name of book]], Chapter ?, UK MMPB p. ?</ref>

immediately after the info. Replace Name of book with the one you're looking at, the question marks with the relevant chapter and page numbers and if you are quoting from a different edition than the UK M(ass)M(arket)P(aper)B(ack) the put an appropriate abbreviation in it's stead (like UK HB (for hardback), for example).

At the bottom of the page just over the categories if not already there, add

==Notes and References==
{{Reflist}}

If everyone just added a few, it would make quite a difference.

Thank you very much :-)

Oh my, you sweet thing - I think I'd like you Egwene and of course your choice of screenname elicits companionable, protective impulses from me BUT you're going about this all wrong IMO. You'll be fighting an endless and failing battle trying to recruit the kind of people you want. The simple fact is that the vast majority of people who pretend to be interested in any given thing are not as interested as you. I get that you are not one of those people - you are genuinely fucking interested and I respect that but don't look to the masses for help because they will never be of any use to any specific endeavour in this place - maybe they could pile on the votes on kickstarter or something to bring back Firefly which would be amazing, but don't count on these treacherous motherfuckers because the first thing to know about us is that we are easily irritated. What you want is crazy people, people who could dedicate themselves to a goal so completely that they barely even notice daily life. I am that sort of person. Are you?

Here is a link to the help page on referencing.

It's not important to get all the formatting exactly right, but it helps with the consistency.

Edit: Oh hey, I just found this if anyone wanted a pointer to start somewhere.

I have started adding the odd 'citation needed' symbol, either when I have come across info I wasn't sure was right or info interesting/important enough that it would be great to be able to take a look at it in the books.

I have begun to add the ref template to the bottom of pages so that referencing is one step shorter (for anyone interested......)

I could add quotes for citations in appropriate areas. Could you name a couple of pages you want work done on? It would give me a good starting point.

That would be fantastic, Imperial Historian :-)

The following link shows pages that have information where supporting source evidence is wanted.

http://malazan.wikia...eeding_citation

It only lists those pages where someone has actually added the 'citation needed' tag to something. We could actually do with referencing all over the place. I often just open a book on a random page and check if the info is on the wiki. I then add the book/chapter/page info to it or, add the info in the first place and then the reference. You also find you might need to correct the Wiki info a little where people have obviously added from memory.

Another starting point is to look at the special pages in the left hand side bar (you may need to be signed in to see it) and go to 'short pages'. There'll be many short pages where you just know you could add tons of info. The tricky bit is to be able to add source info unless you know whereabouts in the books to look.

I find it fun to add some of the seemingly trivial info from the books like how places look and what people wear, eat, etc. Giving our artists a better chance to paint a true reflection of the Malazan world.

One thing for sure, we won't run out of info to add any time soon!

For the Toc the Elder citation needed about Cartheron's sister, it comes from Memories of Ice, chapter 9:

Quote

He laughed, not harshly, but with genuine warmth. 'Come along, Envy. I'll bore you with a detailed recounting of my youth - it'll pass the time. I was born on a ship, you know, and it was more than a few days before Toc the Elder stepped forward to acknowledge his fatherhood - my mother was Captain Cartherone Crust's sister, you see, and Crust had a temper...'

Though I would rephrase it so that there's no implication that Ingen and Leese might also have Cartheron's sister as their mother, as they could easily be only half siblings of Toc. (Given the "stepped forward to acknowledge" part of the quote, I'd even say it's more probable that Inese and Leese are of another woman, since they are older than Toc Junior.)

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

Not sure how I missed replying to your reply, Malaclypse, but I did. Thank you for your evaluation of my request. Alas, I remain an eternal optimist and thus have faith that there are many out there just as crazy as you and I :-)

And... I am not just applying for help... this is also at the same time another instalment in my devious advertising campaign to bring the Wiki to the notice of those who would love to know it was there ;) . I have been totally amazed that some long-time contributors to the forum obviously did not know it existed and from that deduct that there are many Malazan fans out there who still don't know that the answer to the 'who is who' questions are right there. Maybe it will keep some of those who have problems with the complexity of GotM on board - and if they are worried about spoilers... well, guess they are roped in enough already!

Thank you D'rek. I have added the references to the relevant pages. As I am editing Cartheron Crust's page, I am looking at the reference to Urko... was he really called Urko Crust? I am wondering if giving him that surname is correct? Is it just based on him being the brother of the other... in which case, the Crust bit could be Cartheron's alone.

Edit - PS:removed the Chance/Crokus bit. I thought that was wrong which is why I added the 'citation needed' bit.

He is really called "Urko Crust" at least once (in RotCG I think...?).

Thanks D'rek. Will have to dig out the reference sometime. Haven't read RotCG for a bit.

Something strange happened when I tried to log in into the Wiki. It would not accept my current Malazan Empire username/password. Clicking on Forgot Password elicited a response that a mail had been sent to me. Yet no mail appeared in my email id. I have only two, so there cant be any confusion there. Then I tried to create a new account, again using my Malazan Empire user name as my wiki user name, but I got a message that such a username already exists. What am I doing wrong?

The wiki and the malazan empire password system is completely seperate. The wiki user system needs to be registered for separately. Setting them up so they both used the same password would be more trouble than it is worth.

I've got a dozen pages of quotes concerning architectural information, geography and the layout of Darujhistan, I'll work on putting it on the wiki this weekend if I'm not too busy! Really admire all the work you've put into the wiki so far Egwene, keep it up!

Thanks, Dadding, any additions are greatly appreciated by all of us who use the Wiki as a lifeline when we make our way through another re-read. If you have any source info (even if it's only which book) to add to the reference section, that would be even better.

As to my contributions... I haven't been editing that long and I am concentrating mostly on book content. Jade Raven is the real mover and shaker behind the scenes these days. That's where you need to look for a lot of the massive amount of structure behind the site, like templates and 'how to' links. There are also contributors further back who made a huge splash so I am happy to accept the award on their and Jade Raven's behalf!

Look forward to your edits!
