I have recently read both trilogies and Red Sister by Mark, fantastic writer, becoming one of my favourites.

Just finished Mark Lawrence's Grey Sister. It's one of my favorite Lawrence books, second only to The Liar's Key.

I normally pre-order Mark's books (or have done since I think EMPEROR OF THORNS), but it completely slipped my mind this time, and I was out and about and lo and behold, there it was. Sorry all.

I'm halfway through RED SISTER now and let me just say "Holy shit. This book is incredible and gets better with every page"

Thoughts at just over the halfway mark of RED SISTER.

So the turncoat Sister who comes with Lano Tacsis's men through the forest of stone columns at Arabella and aims a spear at her...Arabella calls out "C..."...which I THINK is supposed to throw us off and think it's Cage (as in Nona's nun name) because it follows right after the part where we hear that Arabella is Thorn, and Nona is Cage...but it's more likely Clera right? I mean Sister Kettle (was it Kettle? I think iso anyways) already warned Nona about having Clera as her friend, and Nona already discovered that it was Clera's weird hangups that prevented Nona and Arabella from becoming friends in the first place (like you know that scene in HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHERS STONE where Harry first arrives at Hogwarts and Draco introduces himself and offers his hand, but Ron kind of saves Harry from that offer of friendship? This feels like the reverse. Clera is Draco and Nona is Harry....only this time, Harry ACCEPTED the friendship of the Slytherin, because she didn't know any better?)...and Clera clearly wants to learn all the stuff and then leave the convent...all of which could easily lead to her joining a mercenary band out in the Corridor who takes the coin of the Tacsis family to kill the Argatha?

Anyways, that's my thought right now. I'm trying to figure out a way for that character to be Nona/Cage instead....but then I'll be expecting a turn with that spear towards the remaining mercenaries, and Thorn and Cage fighting together again. That seems less likely than making it Clera to me, but it's Lawrence, so I'l expect the unexpected.

Also, I know these books aren't supposedly connected to the Thorns world....but since it seems clear that this is a world that was once settled by human space travellers who have long since faded into myth and faith...what if Abeth is a world that was found when a PRE-cataclysm Thorns world sent astronauts into space to colonize. Kind of like a Lawrencien Cosmology like Sanderson? Anyways, just a thought.

Still such an amazing book, with such vivid characters!

Finished grey Sister on Wednesday. Great books, love the world and story. It continues to have serious echoes of empire of thorns books in which magic is technology but if this is intentional or just a great plot setting used twice I cant say.

There were one or three moments when I found the narrative shifted suddenly. That is who was talking or what they were talking about just shifted or pivoted on a dime into something else that I found confusing but otherwise it was solid. Some great lines and thougts throughout.

I am a little worried that Zole performed basically several miracles throughout the book and each time they were waved away with a sarcastic 'I am the chosen one'

I enjoyed Nona's oceans 11 moment. It was a bit silly but you want her to win anyway!

The Noi-Guin have suffered in my mind a serious loss of prestige. Difficult to take them seriously as the very scary boogy man they were made out to be. Kettle kills one, Zole kills one, Nona kills like 4 after escaping not to mention the loss of countless lightless all in their own fortress! And they lost their shipheart? Unless we learn later they lost it intentionally in some kind of machivelian scheme this seems to be a serious blow to them. Also it strikes me as odd that they move the tetragode at least every four years to remain hidden but it seems they don't mind letting Sherzal or Tacsis know where they are?

I hope in Holy sister (is this meant to be the final book?) that we finally see some adults from outside the convent use their powers. The Academy, the mage with his own private shipheart, see some Red brothers etc. See a holy witch who has proper mastery of the path.

Edit- There were moments reading this book where I was getting such strong echoes from the blood song books that I had to think about which was which. Interestingly I just found a Q and A where he does list it as an influence. I don't meant that to say its derivative but the religions seem to have had such strong parallels for a moment...

Also Mark Lawrence may be able to compete with Branson Sanderson soon for prolific author. I read that the trilogy was already complete for before they published red sister. Still if that's true why do I have to wait so long for Holy Sister
