Umm, Trull didn't hold him back, he just didn't die immediatly for a short amount of time. That spear is what he is good at fighting with, would you be more happy if it was a sword?

The fact that Trull held back Iccy should say more to you about Trull than Iccy. He's reet badass.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

I understand what you're all saying and i agree. My point wasn't that he didn't kick enough arse it was that Trull was able to hold him back with a spear? I just didn't expect Trull to be able to do that. I'm looking forward to seeing more of him with his new title

This is totally correct, I've explained this opinion/theory in another thread. Nequam's initial explanation was close enough to the whole truth for me to not improve on it.

I believe that Zanth was making a very cruel statement about upcoming events in the next book.

EDIT: Trull falls down a well and instead of sending Lassie to get help, Timmy just stands there and laughs at the poor Edur... wait, should that have been in a spoiler?

I don't know if this has been mentioned or not (sorry, I can't read 46 pages worth of posts) but one thing about SE's writing that annoys me is the overuse of apostrophes. K'Chain Che'Malle, D'riss, G'danisban, Y'Ghatan, 'Siballe, K'rul, D'rek, etc., etc. As Shamus Young says in Chainmail Bikini "When making up names, note that the apostrophe is not some sort of universal stand-in for vowels. Stop doing that."

You're actually mistaken it this critism. Erikson himself I belive has commented on the abuse of apostraphes in fiction. Or maybe not... I don't know.

K'chain Che'Malle is probably a bastardization of some kind of glotal approximation of the KCCMs own pronounciation... or maybe not.

G'danisban, Y'ghatan, etc are the short forms of the Holy Cities (forgotten?) names from the time of the First Empire. Many, if not all, of the true 7C names are revealed in Bonehunters in their long form.

'Siballe is an Imass an the apostrophe at the beginning of her name signifies that she? is broken or severed from the ritual. Like T'oolan or T'lan.

As for the names of D'riss, K'rul and D'rek... who knows? They probably are their true name, but they might also be a shorter variation of an ancient name from a forgotten tongue.

My only complain about the series is the the extent of the vocabulary which some of the characters are able to use. For example, you wouldn't think the Sengar family, especially Trull, could speak so...elaborately. I mean, they are warriors for all I know, not scholars. And yet they speak in this intricate language and use "big words." I know Steven is a genius, but c'mon now.

That one has been brought up earlier in this thread and I agree. It's funny how every characer seems to have a very well developed philosophical view on the world with an amazing understanding of an empires working, the politics and military secrets.

I agree with Zanth. Plus quite a few people don't, Trotts for example has nothing to offer in ways of opinions. This is a recurring theme for many of the Malazans but of course everyone has an opinion whether it be regurgitated or not.

I don't agree everyone's an expert. Instead, I find it weirdly refreshing that the people I expect to be the most knowledge and opinionated are the least so and vice versa.

Most of the mages seem remarkably hands-off when it comes to Imperial matters they could influence. While the fighters, at least in prior fantasies, haven't been most the subtle and nuanced characters but in SE's world they are far more likely to influence things.

Examples: QB did kill Reloe but prevented Kalam from bearding Korbolo if I remember. The Reloe thing seemed like a wizard to wizard issue. Tayschrenn requires the Wu equivalent of an electric cattle prod to do anything proactive.

Kalam decides the Empress needs to die and journeys for an entire book to accomplish that. Karsa decides Rhulad must die in the normal sense of the word and finds a way to do it, accomplishing something mages and chancellors thought impossible. Traveller decides to accept a fight in the name of the Malazan Empire based on Cutter's plea and prevents the Throne of Shadow from falling to the Edur.

Also, there are plenty of examples of non impact(on a large scale) characters--Blend, Picker, Antsy,

There are also chars that support the claim, tho. For me, Udinass is the most well-educated slave in literary history. How does an Indebted slave come into knowledge that challenges Andii myths of origin, for one.

Incidentally, with the subtle spoilers we find here, maybe it's about time this thread was moved to the RG forum...

I ' ve already said that I disliked Karsa much and most , if not all, of MT. I must also say that I found those things at the beginnig of every chapter and so I always skip them . I have recently found out that by doing so I sometimes miss intersting if not vital information.

While MT was lacking a bit compared to the rest, you can't denounce it entirely. Some of the best characters in the series were introduced, Trull, Tehol, Bugg...come on now. And after rereading HoC I have finally found love for Karsa.

So last night I was walking downtown for some pizza at like 1am with some friends of mine,
and someone said, "I'm so hungry I could eat a whole pizza."

I said, "I bet I could eat 100 pizzas," and no one understood me. I was sad.

I see the point here, but I, for one, am glad not to have to read in dialect--ever tried reading Mark Twain or Brian Jacques? Besides, read some dialogue between Koryk and Smiles or any of the sappers if you want low-brow.

As for the thing that irks me about SE's writing, it would have to be how many people grunt or growl in response to things: Dujek growled, Seren Pedac grunted, etc.

Then again, everyone could sniff, like they do in Jordan's WOT.

And why's everyone got such a problem with Karsa??
