So I played my first Iron Banner today (level 21 now). I see that difficulty in IB is ramped up by introducing horrible lag :p It's odd, I've never thus far encountered noticeable lag in normal Crucible, but it was the worst in IB.

Obviously, even without lag I am sure it would have been a similar slaughterhouse for me. And the IB vendor also made me realise how little Glimmer I have relative to the cost of Legendary gear (not that I'm going to be achieving any significant ranks in IB anyway!). AND I suddenly find myself with a severe shortage of weapon parts. I have a feeling that this game is about to become very grindy!

Is it actually impossible for me to kill people who are a way higher level than me, as with PVE enemies? Or is that their armour is so much better and my guns so much weaker? And what does it mean when I see '??' over.a player's head instead of their level?

It's not entirely impossible, but I would not go near the Iron Banner unless you're level 30+ at the moment.

?? means the enemy player is more than 4(?) levels higher than you - essentially like running into higher level enemies in PvE these guys are going to stomp you with ease. The same thing happens if you're more than a few levels below an enemy in PvE. I think it's four levels, but I'm not 100%.

Yep, it's pretty depressing when you super someone, unload an entire clip in them, AND melee slap them around the face - and then they one-shot kill you :p Still, I managed to do the one IB bounty I dared take (gain control of spots 15 times - there's no way I'm attempting any of the kill bounties!)

Up to level 24 now. I still haven't bought a single thing off a vendor (mostly because my ranks aren't high enough). Do you guys bother with ships/emblems? Seems to me like these cosmetic things cost quite a bit and I'll never have the spare change to bother with them when there's so many weapons and armours I'd be wiser to spend all my glimmer and whatnot on.

If you're on level 24 and you're using glimmer on weapons or armour, you're doing it wrong. :p

I don't play Destiny that frequently in general, but I am constantly at the glimmer cap (25k) these days, so much so that I no longer use Ether Seeds/Black Wax Idols/etc to increase my glimmer take from killing enemies. The only thing I spend glimmer on is ammo synths, and I have so much glimmer I deliberately choose to buy the ones from the Gunsmith as opposed to Variks (DLC vendor in the Reef, who sells them for less glimmer but also takes Ether Seeds as well, goes to like 100 glimmer + 1 ES for a synth), because I have so much cash and can't stop accumulating it.

...it doesn't help that they now give Royal Amethest from certain things which are worth 5k glimmer for each to the Cryptarch.

So if I see a nice ship, I'll buy it. The nicest ones are drops though, not for purchase, so even then shaders/ships/emblems tend not to use much glimmer. The exception being the DLC ship "Ceres Galliot" which sells for 17k glimmer. At least that will clean out some of my cash...for a week, and there's only one so yeah.

No, what you are going to want to start earning and stockpiling (though I believe they cap at 200 each anyway) are Vanguard and/or Crucible Marks. You earn these through end-game content or playing in the Crucible and they are the only way to buy decent weapons post level 20. Don't worry about glimmer except for having enough to keep 3/4 Special and Heavy Ammo synths on you at all times (I currently run around with 15-20 of each and another 15 or so Primary Synths, but that's more than you ever need and they don't work in PvP either, so just keep that in mind).

The other currencies you want are Strange Coins for buying Exotic stuff from Xur on weekends and Motes of Light which you accrue naturally from EXP gains after level 20, though they are the least useful of the end-game currencies (Strange Coins arguably being the most valuable, but Marks of some description being the most used/flexible).

Spend some time leveling your Vanguard and/or Crucible and/or Faction rep (pick one, doesn't matter which, if you like their gear - but ONLY once you've got your Vanguard and/or Crucible rep to rank 3 so you can still buy their stuff is something cool cycles in, after that you might as well rank up a Faction for their free stuff and to have options...though if you don't play in the Crucible much, don't bother, as they only take Crucible Marks) because that's going to be your main source of good gear other than RNG drops while playing. Plus, you get care packages each time you rank up past rank 3 which has a chance to give you Legendary engrams/gear. Then grind for Marks of your choice. Strikes, Crucible, doesn't matter, but grind it. As soon as you have enough to buy a Chest or Helmet from your chosen vendor, buy that, then start grinding again, rinse and repeat until you have a full set (best order is Chest -> Helmet - > others, as the Chest gives you the most stats, but it's not that major) - don't bother saving up to the max limit before buying anything because the cost of a full set is higher than your cap (weird, right?). Mostly it's based on aesthetics, and what weapons you use, because some sets give more bonuses to reload/ammo capacity for, say Hand Canons, than others, so if you use those, it can be good to try and get a set with those perks.

...of course, if you've got/are getting the House of Wolves DLC, there's a whole new set of currencies and events to grind for, but that requires DLC and a higher level anyway, so the above stuff applies first.

Also, the above is just generic advice - there are better ways to do it (as I said, I'm pretty casual about play at the moment) but I figure you can't go wrong with the above and it doesn't force you to do anything in particular.

Thanks Silencer, that's really useful advice. I know that you need Crucible and Vanguard marks, but I thought that was just for the Crucible and Vanguard reps, and everyone else still takes glimmer, like the IB rep I think (didn't realise the faction reps also use marks). I haven't at all bothered with those faction reps as yet (really, the only ones I visit at the moment are the bounty rep and the cryptarch). Likewise I've steered away from intentionally earning marks through the playlists while I'm still going through the story and generally exploring the planets (got one story mission left I think).

There are entirely too many currencies in this game :p

I've got no plans to get the DLC, unless I get the game for myself on the PS4 at some point.

He's level 24, BK, how is bonus pts on win going to help him if he can barely survive in the IB to begin with? XD

Really? I've never seen a team with a low level player win in IB. Granted I don't play as much as you, but it's hard enough to win when your team is all 32s and the other is all 34s...XD

I've managed to be on one winning team so far in IB (ironically my very first game). Yeah, perhaps the solution is to get that one kill to get the game to count, and then hide for the rest of the time lol

The best thing about it is that it's made regular Crucible much more enjoyable as all the experienced pros seem to be off playing IB :p

Heh, I managed to be on another IB winning team - thanks to a super on an almost-dead guy, and then only popping out to capture relatively safe zones - handed in 3 Iron Medallions along with that victory to get me within touching distance of Rank 2.

Also finished the story - that made no sense. I mean, it made no sense before, but the end felt like a third of the story was awol.

Also also, I've, uh, just realised there's another social area on the Reef...so, the Queen's Wrath - can you do those bounties without the expansion, or do you need that? I don't see any bounties listed...do they come and go like IB?

Ugh, IRON BANNER is pissing me off. No matter if I play well or not so well, I'm on the winning team like 10% of the time. It's Sooooo Frustrating!

The problem with IB is apparently well known. People are either on teams, or they drop out when it looks to be going bad. So either you're up against an entire team with a bunch of solos or you just suffer ppl getting pissed and leaving. The only reason to stay IN an IB match is if you are winning. It's kind of backwards actually...it stacks the deck for whatever team is doing well.

Bungie needs to implement the same ban system for people dropping IB matches as people dropping Trials. It's silly to allow it and it's not sporting to quit because you're losing.
(for shame, BK, for shame! :ermm:)

It's an insult. XD

But seriously, if you're going to leave a team, do it between matches. If your cut off is 3k points down in the fourth losing match, leave at the end of the third match instead.
