I've got a second viewing lined up soon, and then a 3rd in a few weeks when my best friend has the week off. So at least two more times.

I won't see it twice in the theaters, unless someone treats me. But I will get the extended dvd edition.

I'm hoping that the huge success of this gives Perlman and Black Widow a better chance of success.

...eh. I guess I'll be that guy.
Cosmo made that film for me. The growl between him and Rocket was awesome for me. Liked the Klyn/Knowhere references too. And the villians scene. But it wasn't great at all. This film had a little too much of "I can literally see the ending of this film coming after about 10 minutes in" In my opinion. Maybe I'm funless.

The Winter Soldier is still my MCU highpoint.

I too thought it was average. I don't get the praise. Some humour was good, some of it was clearly for 8 year olds and very forced. Some lines were cringe worth. The action was just so so. I know who Ronan is vaguely from cartoons, I know the nova corps exists but that is it. They don't provide context or set things up at all. Actually all I can sat is I wish they didn't kill Ronan since I thought he had future potential. In fact the whole movie seemed like a reverse avengers, instead of a climax of all the characters joining up for a movie it seemed like a setup for an entire future series of films set in the wider marvel universe.

I had fun. Buying a ticket was definitly worth it. I liked that it didn't take itself seriously, and that it was more of a space opera than anything else.

Haven't had a chance to see the movie yet, but I thought this was pretty cool:

After the last few relatively debbie downers I'll straight up own to LOVING this.

Chris fucking Pratt. My god. I loved him before from Parks and Rec, but he just shot up my favorite actor list.

There were so many times I was just laughing out loud in the theater, along with most other people.

Probably favorite Marvel since first Thor, and Thor is my favorite along with original Iron Man.

That soundtrack had my mouthing along because it is awesome. And the opening "action" scene with Pratt was just classic. I want to watch it again already.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

As someone who knew nothing about this side of the Marvel universe I had no issues at all following who people or organisations are etc.

Fucking loved it! I went in for a ride, and I got a ride. Very nicely blended just enough seriousness with just enough comedy.

Yup, spot-on. Loved the soundtrack, loved the dynamics between the cast - excellent job of introducing and characterising them all - and some really well blended humour and action/plot.

I was listening to NPR: Pop Culture Happy Hour podcast, and they make a REALLY, really good point that I'd not thought of before. And it has kind of pivoted/tainted by backview of MAN OF STEEL.

In MAN OF STEEL, Superman and Zod and Co. fight in Metropolis, and at no point early enough in the narrative is an evacuation order given. People are basically at the mercy of the superhero gods battling around them for the most part. They start running because they HAVE to start running, for all the good it does some of them. I always just figured this was a part of the "upping" of the threat that Zod and Co. present to not only Superman, but to Metropolis and people in general. It's an emotional tweak that is supposed to (as an audience) make us realize that the threat is real, and visceral, and important.

And what the podcast goes into is the fact that in GUARDIANS, none of that is required for the same thing to work. In fact, there is a line before Ronan begins his landing/crashing where the Nova Corps talk of the fact that the main Xandarian city where the ship is coming down on, has ALREADY been evacuated. This mean little-to-no civilian casualties, and the action setpiece can still go forward wholeheartedly. As an audience in that, I STILL feel that the threat is real, and that Ronan (if successful) will bring about massive destruction to people...but without all the collateral damage. I mean, then they add on top of that the smaller sacrifices made by the Nova Corps who are a part of the net...and you've got emotion-trigger city!

And therein lies the most astonishing thing. I've been known to come back on previous thoughts about films, but I've never been so entirely turned around as I am now. MAN OF STEEL (a film which I have defended in the past, up to and including the collateral damage from the last fight) doesn't need to be constructed like that at all. It's like GotG flipped a lightswitch in my head and said "No dummy! Look! We can do this without pointless loss of civilian life. You get your emotional beats, the threat level, the big battle destruction porn....but with none of the bad stuff." Once you know that the Xandarian city is evacuated, you can breathe a bit and go, Oh...okay, go nuts and destroy what you need to.

So I guess I'm saying that James Gunn (of all people) made a much smarter movie than either Zack Snyder did, or even Joss Whedon did. I mean wow!
