This thought rattled around my brain this afternoon as I went screaming (literally) down an icy hill in a Bobcat towards a herd of cattle. What sort of skill set do you have for employment? If you needed to find another job right away, could you?

I totally love my work but I could find other work fairly easily. Every little town in Canada has parks and/or ice rinks. I've got 10 years of experience in heavy equipment operation, landscaping and ice maintenance. Being a rink rat sucks just for the shitty hours but having Zamboni skills is a handy backup. Biggest downside to my skill set is if I ever get seriously injured, I'd be in trouble. I love physical work. Being in a office would drive me nuts.

If shit goes bad I will always have the option of subbing or working in a residential facility for fucked up kids. I don't want to go back to either of those though.

I'm actually not sure?

I have started a few things but have not consolidated any one particular career. I guess there is building and construction everywhere on the planet so possibly yes I'm sure I can find employment anywhere I go, but its a tough gig to get into an architectural firm. lots of red tape before you can get your career off the ground as a fully credited architect. A good blend of skill and connections are important and I have not managed to rack up the same level of experience as my work associates. Then theres the teaching which has been ridiculously inconsistent but enjoyable all the same...

One thing is for sure, if I ever messed up my right hand I'd be useless. Maybe I could learn to use my left to mock up designs on CAD but I'd be useless at art and sketch design which I find usually sees me through the door. I learned early to never underestimate the impression it makes to sketch out concepts at an interview. I'd swear by it.

I am fairly employable.

Excellent people skills.

Physically and mentally agile.

Fairly competent with computers and their usage for business (I went to school for and have worked as an accountant)

I am highly adaptable and multitask extremely well.

I step-up not step-back.

Most important...I take direction when needed and create my own solutions when left to my own ends.

My biggest flaw? I am plagued by delusions of grandeur...=)

After getting my first job as a lawyer, finding new employment has become much easier. It's always hard to say, but I doubt I would struggle finding a new job if I had to.

Outside of law though; I have nothing.

I am currently doing my last year of uni (which I have done part time) in which I can get a first or at least a 2:1 in Mechanical Technology, also have 7years experience as a Design Engineer, designing trucks and JCBs (where I currently work). It has never taken longer than a month to find a new job and I have not been out of work since I was 18. Recently switched to being a contractor increasing my pay by a huge amount and allowing me the option of changing jobs easily and possibly travelling the world.

My flaws are that I get bored quite easily, I need huge complex projects to keep me interested. I am also very young to be asking very large salaries so I have to justify my monetery value to employers quite a lot.

Advantages, my age lol, I will put my balls on the block and throw new ideas in, I am excellent with computers, often speccing them, rebuilding them, adding architecture in like drawing borders, macros, shortcuts to increase productivity. I am very personable, make friends with everybody which is helpful when I need parts cutting and manufacturing asap haha.

Sounds like you guys are all really highly skilled professionals we should take over the world and impose Malazan rule haha :)

I haven't a clue. I've never been unemployed, but I haven't had the need to look for a job in a while. Chances are that I would have to emigrate for a job.

Getting my first job after graduating was tough but I am soon to start job number 4 without having had an unwanted employment break so I'm pretty employable in the sector I have ended up in - DNA based testing and devices. Unfortunately said sector only really exists in a small number of biotech hubs around the world so I have had to move to one of them in order to be available for decent jobs (Cambridge area in UK) but c'est la vie. Outside of my field, I'm like Morgy, I've got nothing. I barely have any practical skills at all.

Not very - most part-time jobs I'm not qualified for by not having a driver's license, and my social skills are bad (though I'm working on that one) and I'm not particularly good at anything. Even though, I haven't been completely without some kind of work since leaving school and usually, when I need a job and put my mind to it, I get one. Those are part-time jobs, though, and I have no idea how 'employable' I will be when I finish uni and how long it will take be able to live off the skills I am supposed to have acquiered there. The field's not exactly screaming for new people. I do like to think of myself as capable at what I studied/study, and also, in the worst case, I can still work in advertising (which I have been doing part-time for a couple of years now anyway).

It's a question being put to test at the moment, lol

I have a metric ton of general work experience. I've done office work, I've done mid-level management work. I work generally well wherever I end up. I'm persistent--if I need to, I'll literally walk around knocking on doors asking for a job.

Outside of law, I could probably find a starter-level position in a week or so, and grow in it after some time, because once I get into something I'm a ridiculously hard and dedicated worker, and I like looking at the big picture to make small changes to make work more efficient.

In law, however, my issue is I'm not licensed yet, and I'm competing with other people in similar position, many of whom have better objective (academic) indicators than me. Given an opportunity to demonstrate the advantages I've gained from actual employment I'd be highly competitive with them, but alas, right now it's still a hurdle.

My strengths would be the above mentioned work ethic. My key weakness in employability sector is I'm not super-personable. I'm generally likeable, and I rarely antagonize people, but I don't become close friends with people either.

Oh, and my other huge problem is a lack of drive to make my own life better. Give me a task, I will promise I'll do it, I will feel responsible, obligated, dedicated, and I'll do it well. But ask me to do something for myself, and you'll die of old age before you see me make moves to succeed.

Nursing degree with experience in psych, hospice, cardiology, geriatrics and case management. I am also licensed in 4 states. So I am pretty sure I could get another job fairly quickly if needed.

I'm a bureaucrat in higher education, very probably the fastest growing sector world wide. I've also worked with international studies, giving me an experience not tht many others have. Even if I didn't work at a university, I'd probably find employment at some governmental quality assurance department or some other completely unrelated office job. Once you've gotten your first job it's generally rather easy to get another.

I'm also a voracious networker (yeah, one of those people). Most people suspect that I got my last job because I play football with a few bosses at the university. I don't make close friends with anyone, but most people come away with an alright impression of me.

Work wise I suspect people think better of me than I deserve, one because I'm a cheeky bugger, and two because I'm fairly good at seeing the bigger picture. The latter goes somewhat at the expense of my attention to detail and general structure, but unless you're very good at that people tend not to rate it as highly. As such most people who matter are generally impressed with me.

And if worst came to worst I'm a licensed truck driver up to 8 tonnes - I could probably find me something at a construction site or a storage facility if things got really desperate.

I feel pretty good about my employment situation. I'm a multilingual, female family doctor in a country with a chronic family doctor shortage. That specific combination is highly sought after, but in low supply. I finished my training in the middle of an economic meltdown and had job offers coming at me right, left, and centre. My certification is only good in Canada though, and after 10 years of post-secondary education and more high stakes exams than I care to recall, I really don't feel like taking any more exams to get certified anywhere else.

If the situation changes and jobs get scarce, I still think that I would be able to find a job. I just won't be able to be so picky about location. There's always a small town out there somewhere that needs a doctor. It was funny. When I was in training still, there was a noticeable difference in how the nurses would treat the male residents, as opposed to the female ones. The guys I was training with would describe attractive, young nurses sidling up to them and flirting, fetching them coffee, that sort of thing. It wasn't even subtle. The only time that ever happened to me was when I was working in a small town. Nurses would come up to me all, "Are you tired? If you're hungry, here's some cookies. Can I get you anything? You want me to put on a fresh pot of coffee?" It didn't make any sense until one of them let slip, " You know, it would be SOOO nice if we could get a lady doctor in this town." It was a nice town. A bit too far north and a bit too cold for my liking, but I have good memories of that placement.

I work with a very specific product that I won't bother explaining because it's boring and finance related. It does however make me quite employable because it's a popular product and I have thirteen years experience with it.

It seems that should I be inclined to go to the other side of the world, New Zealand are practically throwing visa offers at me. Seems to be a real shortage of specialists in said product over there.

Coincidentally, in a couple of years my girlfriend will be qualified as a speech therapist and audiologist, which NZ are also desperately trying to import.

We have a fair bit keeping us in Europe, but it's a tempting though. Especially since I fucking LOVE Sauvignon Blanc from the Marlborough vineyards...

I am employed by the Federal Govt, so the answer to the question is ... not very. :)
