It is the year 1327.

Twenty years before the Black Death strikes Europe and wipes out a third of the continent’s people, the population is rapidly increasing and the fear of heresy grows even faster. Monasteries are on the wane, replaced by the century-old mendicant orders – the friars of Franciscans and Dominican pre-eminent among them – who move among the people in efforts – at times paternal, at times vicious – to educate and correct.

The people are being handed the keys to their own salvation, no longer reliant on monks behind cloistered walls to pray for them. Likewise, knowledge long forgotten has been frantically rediscovered over the past several decades – ironically, thanks to the demonic Saracens, who translated the classical texts into Arabic and thus saved them from oblivion. Aristotle, Plato, Cicero, and a host of ancient authorities previously known largely by name only have a sudden, irreversible, impact on political and theological thought.

But with this new knowledge comes the danger of improper thinking. Should such knowledge be shared, or should the people be spared, saved from the shocking blasphemies of non-Christian authors? The books are coveted and feared in equal measure by the ecclesiastical authorities.
And one Benedictine monastery in Northern Italy in particular remains the envy of the known world in its unparalleled collection of sacred and profane texts – all locked away within the labyrinthine library.

But this library hides more secrets than solely the content of the books. For within this monastery, this most holy of places, there has been a death. The body of the hugely talented illuminator, Adelmo of Otranto, has been found at the bottom of the walls, a seeming suicide. But something far more sinister is afoot. It is the worst possible time, mere days before an important meeting of imperial and Church representative is due to be held there. If there has been a murder committed, then the guilty person or persons must be captured before shame is brought to the monastery.

Into this lion’s den steps the Franciscan William of Baskerville, a former inquisitor famous for his deductive abilities. Together with his assistant, the Benedictine novice Adso of Melk, he is asked to find the person or persons responsible for this most tragic of events.

Usual rules and regulations - of course I don't need to post them for you, right? Right?!

Please do not EVER quote or paraphrase your PMs, it will result in a modkilling.

This is a TMDI 1-2 game. Days are 36 hours. Nights are instantaneous(ish).

Reveals and fake reveals are permitted - but not advised at all. Trust me when I say it probably won't work out the way you hope

In three days we start playing image-based mafia instead of text-only?

I don't get the Bernard part, but I know what a GUI is. I looked for an image to post to demonstrate how cool I really am, but I got only weird screenshots of obscure pieces of software and Japanese schoolgirls, which I find strange.

I'm guessing this is what the Bernard Gui thing refers to?

Of course, it might help if the mods of a supposedly simple game would actually tell people the game conditions instead of cryptically referring to them in the explanation and letting people figure it out for themselves

I'd hoped that fad had passed.

it's like a game... within a game.

Why do we need a new interface, anyway?

Do you not find that figuring it out yourself gets your brain fired up and in theme for the game? I do.

Game conditions:

Town must eliminate scum before scum achieves parity or numbers more than town. Duh.

Flavour text will abound in this game. I enjoy it, so get used to it

Having not read the book, I can only imagine that the Global User Interface person's arrival will mean nothing good for our quiet scholarly community. We already have an ex-inquisitor, will Bernard be a real one?

PS' clarification leaves me thinking it might not really mean anything.
