So in case anyone was still wondering, I was not just crazily influencing and de-influencing, and moving my ships into entirely random spots.

One of my original aims was to either claim without a fight or in a fight Iota Bootis, and I wanted to do it near the end of the round. An opportunity presented itself early in the round, but I spurned the window. After that I hoped that D'rek would do it.

A second aim was to garner more income production to spend next round, because, without any advanced tech, I had reached a block on my production in my current space. Mission half-accomplished, because...

...the third aim was to get either Gnaw or Tatts or both to overreach themselves by presenting myself as a juicy target for annihilation. Unfortunately, that also ended up entailing the destruction of all my ships, which the slightly increased production stores only partially cover.


Ok, I didn't exactly plan my moves all in advance, but those aims were definitely in there! :D

I played a 5-player table game on the weekend. Somehow both the Planta and the Mechanema managed to each completely wall themselves off from the rest of the galaxy with no more than half-wormholes, though the Planta explored two warp portals and kept them. Magellan got the warp portal discovery, I (exiles) explored the other warp portal and Descendants eventually built the warp portal development. We all got into a big tug-of-war in the Planta hexes, while Mechanema just sat in a corner fighting ancients (poorly) and surprisingly not building monoliths. It ended up being a strangely low-tech game - even by the end half the players were using ion cannons and I don't think anyone ever researched gluon computers, plasma missiles or wormhole generators. And, there was only one attack on the ancient dreadnaught in the middle, and it failed. It was a strange game!

Sounds like a strange game indeed. No one took the center all game long? It's way too juicy of a hex to leave alone. And not getting military tech just sounds crazy stupid. Usually that is what I aim to grab as quickly as possible at the expense of the cheap tech. Though I like the idea of keeping IH and Tatts with just Ion cannons all game long in this game.


I think it was a combination of fewer science planets than usual being drawn in the hexes and things just escalated really quickly with 4 warp portals being uncovered in the first two rounds. There was a lot of materials on the board, so players will putting a ton of ships into sneak attacks very early, and then everyone was focusing on more money and materials to counterattack rather than research lots of upgrades. Neutron bombs, positron computers, nanorobots, gauss shields, starbases, advanced economy and advanced materials were the ones researched the most. I think there was only one plasma cannon and one improved hull tile drawn in the first 7 or so rounds. I personally had +2 or +3 science almost the whole game. Even when building orbitals I was always colonizing them with money to afford more hexes and moves. It was frantic!

Shouldn't Morgoth's retreat orders have triggered before that last engagement? He was at 3 health and IH was still at 5.

His says "if 3 points of damage with no hits on IH'. He only has two points of damage.
