As of now the University should, with the help of some materials provided by willing alumnis, be able to expand the campus by ourselves.

The offer is appreciated all the same.

Morgoth, what you think about allying up? I plan on a sciencey build with my planets being what they are. Could do us well in the long run. Lots of perma-points so we don't have to rely so much on territory grabs.

How many Exchange students can you provide? And will they be willing to spend 28 out of the 32 hours of the day in a lab? Can they survive solely on coffee and stale biscuits?

If so the University would be most positive to an open exchange program indeed.

Your response is unclear, are the hydrans still contemplating the merits of lasting peace with the Human colonies, or are you simply saying you do not need help with the ancients.

We certainly wish to start an academic program with the Homo Sapiens of the Orange persuasion, but we do not as of now need military aid. There will however be many a match of Octoball where extra security will be appreciated in the future.

So yeah, I'm up for an alliance. We two can huddle down in our corner while the big boys lay waste to each other.

Seems like the dividing-up has begun.

Except for twelve, appropriately :)

I would have preferred not to, but my choice was to risk CF reaching in the other direction, which would have made me too isolated.

You can't imagine how strong the temptation to crush you now is. Only Tapper's statement that he wouldn't accept an alliance with just me is stopping me.

Not entirely sure what I'm supposed to be doing with my time if it isn't crushing you though...

It's perfectly understandable, and you two are in a good position to team up, too. Only one choke-point into your entire combined area, and a couple ancients in there to get some early rep tiles. Plus you've both got decent hexes. You guys can build up your forces and tech for a bit then decide to drop the warp portal development and attack through there, or you can focus on filling your tech board for points while CF charges into the tier 1 ancients before IH does, or even make a move on Tapper - fairly flexible strategic options long term that don't sacrifice your defenses much.

There's this ancient you can crush...
Also, I guess with D'rek wormholing her way through the universe, Tatts becomes a potential opponent.

Humph, fine.

D'rek, as part of our alliance agreement, instead of crushing you out of existence, I will give you Delta Eridani. I will bankrupt myself at the end of this round and remove my disc from that hex, and you can then influence it.

That would be from round 4 onwards, that is right yes? By then she would not dare attack me.

@Gnaw:

Order then, for next time one of our turns come around, form an alliance between Terran Directorate and the Hydrani.

Science ship Valdez is inbound for Beta Hydrii. We have dispatched some of the Terran Directorate's greatest minds to learn from your scholars, and hopefully to teach our ways in-kind.

It seems to me that our systems are well defended for a science-based approach to galactic dominance. Barring development of the Wormhole Generator by one of our neighbours, we only need worry about incursions from the North.

I find it timely to inform you that the Directorate has forged diplomatic relations with the Keepers of Magellan as well. Their intentions to date seem peaceful. We should keep the door open in the future as a potential member for our alliance, provided there are no feuds over our Planned recovery mission in Arcturus.

You can't de-influence it this round? You could take off Iota Persei with it, then not even have to purposefully bankrupt yourself this round. That would let me connect to tapper this round, and then I could both afford both a science shrine this round and advanced labs next round, after which I'll be rolling in the tech to help you guys. And after the de-influence, you would still have 4 actions left this round - IMO you only need 2 to beat the ancient plus 1 to influence the ancient hex, so this would actually save you money for next round instead of doing pointless actions just to bankrupt yourself.

My consideration was mainly about how hydran seem to flourish if left alone and are a potent thorn in your side if not left alone. If we were fighting, we'd be keeping each other down all game. Together with the way we're set up connection-wise, there's way more to gain from being allies IMO. As d'rek points out, there's some potential for game changing technology in 2 discovery tiles (if we can act quickly enough on Arcturus) and potential is always there for a late-game grab at the GC.

Or monolith/science play. Both work for me. What is your priority at the moment?

Yes, that was my first thought, but then the paranoia and made me want to keep you poor for another round. Hmm.

The ones known as Planta withdraw their spores and tendrils from their outermost explorations. The Planta have the patience of eons for they know that in the end the galaxy shall know the bounty of their infestation.

INFLUENCE. Remove discs from Delta Eridani and Iota Persei.

Once I beat that ancient and have absolutely nothing else left to do, I'm going to regret this.

And when we win the game you'll un-regret this! Then you'll forget all about it at the after-party! (unrelated to game: I tried absinthe for the first time on halloween = whoooaaaaa)

One advantage to being Lyra - you don't have to worry much about negotiations turning hostile. The Triarch himself can attend any meeting, any council or treatise. In fact, he can attend a dozen of them at once. If it's a trap and he is blown to pieces, he will arrive in the central palace the next morning regardless. If he is kidnapped, the Grid's manifolds will be withdrawn and the enemy will learn nothing from the lifeless, mindless husk they are left with. Not that they'll have long to try before that husk explodes.

I wonder if the same is true for these Planta I am meeting with. Not the exploding - although their warrior strains have certainly been seen using explosive acidic sacs and other chemical propellants - but the collective mindspace and multividuality that would make any member of the race as capable of representing their whole civilization as a Lyra. The Planta certainly seem to move and act with uncannily synchronized purpose. But on the other gluva, that could just be due to a rapid communication form that neither I nor the Grid have the senses to detect.

The green, blue and violet bioform across the table rustles its ferns, producing a rapid sequence of clicks and buzzes. Communication at this meeting has been... difficult. The Lyra are unused to deciphering language from sounds, especially not as rapidly as the Planta seem to emit them. At the same time, most of the Planta possess no visual organs with which to observe the motions of the Lyra language. Thankfully, the Magellan arbitrator brought by the Planta delegate appears to have 34 discrete sensory organs, and is able to translate very efficiently.

I did make a slight dip into the nearest shrine's hyperplexion conduits for a brief sublimation of the arbitrator - just enough to ensure that he was translating things accurately - then reversed the local continuum field to undo it.

With the translation problems taken care of, and myself reassured that these races are trustworthy, negotiations are now proceeding in earnest. Perhaps we three races can establish a truly harmonous co-civilization, an example for all the rest of the galaxy.

INFluence Delta Eridani and Lambda Tauri. Colonize the two science slots. Flip up two colony ships.

Extend offer of diplomatic relations to the Magellan.

Extend official wishes to join alliance to the Planta. If the Magellan accept diplomatic relations, also extend these wishes to the Magellan (technically Tapper here can refuse the diplomatic relations, but still allow me to join a Tapper-Khell alliance through my relations with Khell, as long as both are already in an alliance and both agree to it - I guess this would be useful if Tapper wants more space for rep tiles instead of another ambassador).
