Mystery Man Bridgeburners new assignment
#1
Posted 08 August 2013 - 08:00 PM
At the end of the book Dujek assigns the Bridgeburners to go back to Darujhistan and do whatever they can to help Baruk with a mystery man that has recently come under his service or whatever. Was he referring to Duiker's new person? In the afterlogue they own a bar and Duiker is there but never says anything until the final words of the book, so it makes it seem as tho that is who Dujek was referring to, but i dunno...was there someone eles I forgot about?

No its Duiker who has been healed by Baruk. The BB would be good company for Duiker and it is suggested they all know each other.

Ok so the guy Dujek refers to ISN'T Duiker, its some other guy who I will have to RAFO about?

Can you post the relevant quote?

'Besides, you've one more mission, and it takes you to Darujhistan. The Trygalle has delivered someone. He's presently in the care of the High Alchemist, Baruk. The man's not well - he needs you, I think. Malazans. Soldiers. Do what you can for him when you're there, and when you decide that you can't do anything more, then walk away.'
At first I thought he was referring to Duiker, but im not sure...thoughts?

You had it right the first time, he is referring to Duiker. A couple of Baruk's demons travelled with the Trygalle carriage and picked up Duiker's body (together with the vial thing holding his soul), and took him back to the High Alchemist. Being a High Alchemist and whatnot, Baruk was able to fix up Duiker's somewhat worse-for-wear body and return his soul into it.
The mental trauma of the Chain of Dogs and its aftermath is what Dujek is hoping the remaining Bridgeburners can help Duiker with.

ohh right there was mention that his body no longer hung from the last tree...ok that all makes sense now!! thanks! and hence the last line of book 3!!! gotcha...but now i have another question about a mystery man...there is a few paragraphs in the epilogue after Paran goes into the House of Azath and he comes across a mystery man who wants Paran to help him do something with a barrow in the ghadrobi hills or whatever and he says there is LOTS of gold involved by Paran turns it down and warns him not to linger in front of the building which i think is the bridgeburners bar...I feel like this is one of those RAFO parts but maybe not...who is that guy?

I don't think it's RAFO so much as a distant callback. I believe that is Munug, the artisan who gave the torcs over to Picker and is in service to The Crippled God, having painted his card in the Deck. The beggar's useless legs are the biggest hint there.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Yup. He meant the House of Chains (which is a great segue into the title of the following book), the Crippled God's faction.

ahhh ok....so on more question about a mystery man and then i think i will be satisfied for the time being...Again, at the end of the book, Toc the Younger has taken Anasters body and become the Mortal Sword of Fanderlay and Togg, and he is sitting on his horse and a man approaches him and says something about wanting to look at him and make sure he is ok. Toc doesnt recognize him. Then this mystery man in the very next sub section is talking with his sister and she is glad to have him back and what not. This leads me to believe the man is Tool and his sister, but surely Toc would remember Tool...but it seems that Tool is no longer the undead T'lan Imass that he was...now it kind of seems like he is flesh and bone again. By dropping his sword when he was talking with Silverfox, did he somehow undo the ritual?

It IS Tool. Silverfox had released him from the Ritual. it's what she was prepared to do for the rest of the Clans but they refused in order to go to Assail.
Toc only ever saw Tool in his undead form, and would have never seen a living Imass.
For the significance of Imass weapons... RAFO.

Ahh ok...so the purpose of the ritual was to make them immortal so they could battle with the Jaghut right? but his sister did not participate in the ritual yet somehow she has lived just as long as him...As I understand sorcery can keep mages alive for a long time, so I presume that is how she is still alive, but if thats the case, then what was the purpose of the ritual?

I agree with Veng, but a few points from bks 1-3...
- The Imass were in a race war with the Jaghut. It was started because Jaghut Tyrants were enslaving Imass.
- The Imass decided that the only way to stop this was to wipe out all the Jaghuts.
- Only Imass Bonecasters were 'mages'. Most clans had a few bonecasters, but not many.
- The rest of the Imass were mortal neanderthal types who had to eat.
- The Jaghut would use Ice Ages as weapons to starve entire Imass clans to death.
- Being mostly immortal, Jaghut could afford to wait. The Imass couldn't.
- Facing extinction, the Imass used the Ritual of Tellan to make themselves undead to carry on the war.
- The Ritual involved the bonds between Bonecasters and clans and families.
- Kilava was already a bonecaster and soletaken.
- Kilava didn't want to play so she killed her entire family to ensure the bonds didn't force her to be part of the Ritual, except for Tool who fought her off.
- Apparently that was enough for Kilava to stay alive, and she's been wandering around ever since.

I have a question that's just related to my poor memory, probably easy to answer, but it's been nagging me. What is the difference between the T'lan Imass who wind up following Silverfox and the T'lan Imass who end up in front of Coral and get de-ritualized by Itkovian? I'm just not remembering at all why these turn out to be two separate groups. Is it that the TI who attend the meeting with Silverfox aren't all physically present because it's a Warren or a dreamworld? I do recall the presence of OE at the meeting, for instance. I just can't recall if there's factions here or what.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

I'm pretty sure they are the same group, they don't get set free just their memories. The memories are in the dream world for the T'lan when they come back from helping their kin, that is when they would ask Silverfox to release them.
The Harder the world, the fiercer the Honor.
