Hi,
Finished today (still got the 2 ICE books to go) after 10 months of reading all about this brilliant series. I feel gutted I won't be reading about these brilliant characters anymore, feels like some of them are family members to be honest.
Overall I was disappointed with the ending, so many loose bits and unexplained parts (any book where you have to look up on the internet what happened is a bit poor IMHO). There are 14 pages of discussion for me to read through now to try to piece together what happened, I've skimmed through but had one question re the otataral dragon.
What happened when it was created?
When the warrens were made, they needed some force of balance? so 2 dragons were created in opposition one being the otataral dragon.
There was a passage mentioning the dragon god of the KChain che malle (sp) being slain by the otataral dragon (when the Kchain che malle destriant first sets out to find Stormy and Gessler, they are persued and the Jaghut 14 intervene, it was around this point in the story).
I don't believe the otataral dragon was immediately chained after it's creation, as we are told Anomander craftily trapped it .
Why didn't it go on a mad 'destroy everything' spree when it was created? It almost seems like it was a 'normal' dragon in the beggining.
So many great concepts poorly knitted together. Overall I enjoyed the series and will carry on reading his work but just feel he dropped the ball putting all this together. Basically reading some of the brilliant summations by posters on this forum leads me to think 'would it have killed him to be a bit more explanatory with his work'. I don't consider myself to be uneducated or naturally thick, I also understand he doesn't need to spoon feed his readers, but I felt let down after putting in so much.
I only wanted to ask the question about the dragon, but all this frustration is pouring out. I mean if you create an otataral dragon, you better bloody well step back coz 'it's gonna blow' (not that i've created many myself). I can't imagine they created it then all started chasing after it (like on the Benny Hill show - one minute all these powerful beings are headlong after the dragon, next minute they are hightailing back the other way with the dragon in pursuit).
Anyway, I shall continue to read the posts and try to sift out nuggets of info about unanswered questions I have. I would like to thank all you wonderful people who help to answer peoples questions on all the books, particularly Worry and Abyss who seem to answer every post anybody makes. It makes such a difference when someone gives you another take on something bugging you about a part of the book - keep up the good work.
Oh yeah, don't forget to check out the reread over at Tor.com, in couple more years, I can imagine it will go into meltdown when they reach the end............Who,what,where,when,how,if and also..........

Otataral Dragon

The OT dragon wasn't so much created as it was aspected to be anathema to T'iam. She always existed, but in order to keep the balance of things, she had to be given the anti-magic aspect of otataral, a force of negation. As pertains to that, when she is free, the other Elient will try to kill her, its just how it is. So her chaining does the following: It keeps magic alive, which keeps the world alive; it keeps HER alive, though what is living when spiked to a tree? THough as Sechul Lath says:
Quote
‘They chained her the first time,’ he said, ‘because killing her was not an option – not if they wanted to keep the warrens alive.’
Theorizing that one could poop within his own lifetime, Doctor Poopet led an elite group of scientists into the desert to develop a top secret project, known as QUANTUM POOP. Pressured to prove his theories or lose funding, Doctor Poopet, prematurely stepped into the Poop Accelerator and vanished. He awoke to find himself in the past, suffering from partial amnesia and facing a mirror image that was not his own. Fortunately, contact with his own bowels was made through brainwave transmissions, with Al the Poop Observer, who appeared in the form of a hologram that only Doctor Poopet could see and hear. Trapped in the past, Doctor Poopet finds himself pooping from life to life, pooping things right, that once went wrong and hoping each time, that his next poop will be the poop home.

I bet we'll learn more about The Elient and K'rul's bargain in the next Kharkanas book.

Blimey, I didn't realise that was the same dragon.
The first time I came across the OD was when Pearl and Lostara were searching for Felasin, I think it was just before they entered the gate into the warren of the Tiste Liosan, I seem to remember Lostara falling down a slope and then looking up at the OD. For some reason I got the impression this dragon was trapped by being encased in something and hanging over an abyss like area (my memory).
The other dragon, that was spiked to a tree, I thought was a different one. This one was found by Icarium and Mappo. I thought this one was in the middle of a sky keep which was embedded in a mountainside/chasm, my memory tells me that the spikes were otataral. So I thought these were 2 different dragons, the second one was just an example of how powerful the K'chain are and maybe a measure of their cruelty???

Yeah, those are two different dragons. Sorrit was impaled with blackwood inside the Skykeep, whereas iirc Korabas was crucified on a piece of giant wood (I believe she was chained to it).
uhm, that should be 'stuff.' My stiff is never nihilistic.
