My timezone sucks for the start of mafia games. I go to bed when most of the games start, and Tuesdays (Monday night for everyone else) are my busiest day of the week, meaning I do not have internet access until Wednesday morning.
I've been modkilled twice, and barely made it before modkill a third time. This is bullshit, because I'll never be able to play mafia again with what has become the "standard" start time of games.
Suggestions or thoughts, please, because this aint fair.

I would totally support a weekend start.
You could get a surrogate to hold down the fort (get you lynched early) for the first day
I can think of several people who could help in that regard (even PS may want to have some fun, all to help of course).

Har har.
My only real suggestion is to make sure games start before 11pm on Monday night, Japan time (monday morning 10amEST), so I can at least sign in on Monday night and contribute before my blackout. Anything started later and I wont even see my alt until Wednesday morning 8am (7pm, tuesday EST)

Glad to see it's a timezone thing instead of anything more serious
.
I don't think a surrogate is a good idea. I can see it easily giving away the alt (posting style, timezone shift), and the crossover is hard to handle. Consider what happens if he gets pressure for something the other guy had done, which is pretty inevitable. The only defence would really be meta, and it's a tough thing to lynch on. But it sucks if he gets a pass through the early game because of it, since that can be a pretty crucial phase.
I also think weekend starts would be pretty sluggish. Would it help?
I mean, Monday sleep/whole of tuesday/tuesday sleep is going to be a 36 hour period regardless.
If it's a matter of when the game starts, I don't see an issue with starting earlier or later. Would earlier or later on Monday work? If mods aren't around, it surely isn't too much hassle to have the thread up a bit in advance and just have the timer start at a certain point.
I really don't mind when we start, though ideally I'd choose not start too close to the weekend, and do think there are a probably couple of benefits to Mondays.

Would starting Monday evening help? Something like 7pm GMT is 4am Tuesday Japan time (I think?), which would have you kicking in at around 8 hours to go. It's not ideal, but it's probably better than only being around at the start of day one, since it gives you more chance to contribute on the first day.

Well, I can generally log in by 8am wednesday morning, japantime, so yeah, monday 7pm GMT would work fine. That lets me log in with 8 hours left.

The question then becomes, though, who else that start time may impact upon, doesn't it?
If it's not going to affect anyone else, gravy. But on the off-chance it does, we can probably brainstorm some alternatives.
1. Standard day one extension; bring the first day to be an extended one of 48 hours or similar across (almost) all games, where possible.
2. Extended day-one modkill timer for all players (keeps identities hidden if it is across the board, after all), though obvious downsides here are promoting lurking/avoiding day one, and doesn't really help the "lynched in absentia" scenario.
3. ???
Just food for thought, really.

Shin, why don't you just say in the sign-up threads that you would prefer it if the game could start a bit later in the week? I don't see why that would be a problem.
I don't see any need for modkill extensions or substitute players or day 1 extensions or all the weird and wonderful and convoluted ideas.
Just say before the game that you can play if the game started on a Tuesday or Wednesday instead of a Monday, or whatever is best!

I don't really mind the Monday start, if it can just start late enough that I can log in Wednesday morning 8ish hours before modkill timer wacks me.
Honestly, if I read the PM timestamps right I think I was modkilled only 3 hours before I signed on.

@Khell - people do that already. It doesn't seem to work (iirc, the game where Vengy said he could play if it started Tuesday but was out otherwise, it started on what day? Yeah...)

It just doesn't strike me as an issue which needs workarounds - just make sure that the game's primary mod is aware that if you are to play, the game cannot start before a certain point. I don't remember the game you're referring to, but if it was the case that it started on a Monday anyway, then that was just silly on the mod's part and I'm sure Venge had a right to rant at that

It shouldn't put other people out that the game starts slightly later - even if it's say, as much as two days later (which isn't even what Shin's asking for) - as everyone here fully expects to be playing in the middle of the week anyway if they're signing up to Mafia.

I like both of these suggestions. I remember that we had played several games where day 1 was longer then the rest of the game. I don't remember why we stopped. But that would give SHIN and you far eastern's time to play.
How many fucking people do I have to hammer in order to get that across.

The issue with an evening start for me is that I mod during my workday. Basically, I'd fire up the game just when I'm about to go off-line - not ideal at all. But my private solution would be to start my games on tuesday morning, I think that would work?

I like the idea of a longer day one, and think it's better solution than extending the modkill timer. A longer day one gives everyone more chance to get involved on day one, while a longer timer gives people an easier time of not getting involved.

This is true for me too. Though a Tuesday morning start time would work for me. I can and will certainly do that for any future games that I'm running that you're in Shin.

And I want a beautiful blonde with big tits, and lips that taste like French-vanilla ice cream.
If we start on Tuesday morning, and continue to leave out weekend play, we drop to only 4 days of play per week. Or is Shin saying he only needs the first Monday of each game off, but can be there for any additional mondays that may be required?
How can I put this delicately.
Fuck Shin.
I say we exploit his weakness for our own personal gain, and/or ridicule him for being 'temporally challenged.'
