Tho the scene in the finale where he's crying... actually CRYING to dr duM about Will and Abigail was interesting, because the notion that he would fake that as part of his mask persona it totally in keeping with the character, but the idea that he was being genuine and did was want Will as a friend and Abigail as a daughter of sorts is also valid, in the sense that he could be seeking those sort of human connections, notwithstanding his lack of care for pretty much everyone.
I think he's faking it on the basis that on the occasions we've seen him show real emotion (when he's alone for example), it's been the barest hint - like in an earlier episode when he goes to his waiting room for an appointment with Will with a spring in his step then looks visibly disappointed when Will's not there; only to then be pleased when he finds Will and discovers there's an interesting reason for it. Actual tears just don't seem his type of thing.
That office scene was very nicely done by Mikkelson.
But he's showing Lecter at a very different point from SILENCE. This is Lecter still trying to find his way, so to speak. By the time we meet him in DRAGON, he's already been caught by Will and in prison for years. The mask, the attempt at creating a mask, is gone. This is an earlier stage, and his whole obsession with Will seems to be equal parts sociopathicaly wanting to see what will happen, but also wanting a friend who can empathize to the point of actually understanding him.
Quote
That's not to say I don't think he regrets killing Abigail (and I think he has) - I think his apology to her in the previous episode is genuine.
I agree that the apology was genuine, assuming he did kill her. It could have been a very manipulative way to get her to agree to the de-ear-ing and a whole lot of blood loss.

But then if DuMarier knows, why would he fake it?
Her knowing what Hannibal is, and to what extent she knows this, is up in the air for both the viewer, and I believe for Hannibal as well. I think he suspects that she is suspicious of his true nature (having supposedly seen him do something to the patient that attacked her? and also describing him as a "well made person suit" or whatever it was), but I don't think he knows HOW much she knows. So faking some tears may still be worth it in her presence? Just a guess.
If she doesn't know, the tears are either a mask, or genuine despite him lying about the reasons.
If she knows, the same holds true because he may still be playing her, albeit a different deception.
If he were looking for someone to take the fall for both him and Will, Dr dM could be a useful victim.

I do love DuMaurier as a character, and am super excited to hopefully see more of her. She's sooo enigmatic!!
She is very good. The role utterly suits Gillian Anderson.

Nope. It's way less having watched the show for a while, but at the start and still now and then i struggle with his accent and low voice.

And since we've not linked it yet, the trailer.
Can't wait.

Cheers for that link PG, had forgotten to check when the new season began.
HANNIBAL is one of the few shows I genuinely look forward to each week. As an aspiring film maker, I loved the cinematography on the first season, and thought they got the tone dead on. Some brilliant acting as well.
If they have it in mind to just do two seasons, then this could be truly amazing. My fear is that they try and stretch it out too far. At the very most, I'd say 3 seasons, and have the third season being Will Graham directly hunting Hannibal Lecter, and bring us up to the timeframe of Red Dragon/Manhunter.
But I'm crossing fingers for 2 seasons and done.

No luck - Bryan Fuller has rather famously sketched out plotlines through at least season 4 (because he's repeatedly said that if they get that far, Season 4 will essentially be Red Dragon, and every major cast member has described how they were partly sold by how enthusiastically - but also coherently- he was selling a long-term concept).
On the basis of season 1 though he appears to be doing the sensible thing of ending each season in a place where it won't be too painful if it gets cancelled. Frankly I'd be delighted...

I am rather curious to see them take it all the way to RED DRAGON, especially given where Will and Hannibal are at as of the beginning of S2, and some of the hints from the trailer that seem to suggest Hannibal will go full evil (ie: everyone knows he's a bad guy) sooner rather than later (unless that fight in the trailer is a dream sequence or something). I do love the role reversal they've worked here. It's so gloriously twisted.
Part of the 'problem' is that if they're following that line of story, certain characters cannot die. I don't have a problem with them diverging from the books tho'. The show is good enuf to have earned that privilege.

Great S2 premiere. Loved the teaser at the opening (Jack... could have planned that a little better maybe?), love the first killer they're hunting, loving Will's situation and how he's dealing with it. So much goodness and great suits packed into 44 minutes.
Love this show.

Succulent start to the season indeed, they just nail every episode, I honestly cannot think of a single bad/average ep yet.
I just cannot wait to see how it pans out (especially with the tease) and I cannot wait to see the development with Will! Especially after this interview...

S'funny... we were trying to recall a bad ep from S1, and all we could come up with was the human totem pole ep... which was a neat killer concept, but overal just nothing special in a shaow that otherwise continually kills it (pun intended_ week after week. Intrinsically a 'filler' ep designed to stand alone wherever they wanted to stick it in the season.
But the set up for this season was tv mastery. VERY intrigued to see how this all plays out.
Sad about the kitchen tho'.

And you can only really call the totem episode a filler episode at a push, iirc that had the reveals with Abi and Will really starting to go nuts!!
It's just such an epic, mindfuck of a show that is beautifully done, you know this season will be TENSE!
We held a minutes silence!
