Okay....not TOTALLY sure that Barry would fall for the Yuma base people drugging him (or whatever they did). He just seems WAY too smart for such shenanigans. I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt for now, but yeah...I hope when he busts out he roasts some fucking people.

Finished EX-PATRIOTS this morning. Some things written below!

Okay, the epilogue with St. George giving Gorgon's Duster and duties to Freedom was an awesome scene. LOVE that he's being incorporated into the team. He's such an altruistic guy. Although, was I right in believing that the asshole Taylor made it to the Mount too...or did he die in the chaos? Realizing they were not going to be able to make it off the Yuma base, and tricking Legion by playing off his knowledge that the military would hold their ground and using that to escape through his *ahem* legions....GOLD. Live to fight another day. I'm glad the pop culture references were toned down in this one....mainly Barry using them, and he even gets chastised for doing so, to which he responds "Yup, too bad!" Speaking of Barry, the fledgling relationship between him and Danielle? Me like. Smith. Hmmm...didn't see Smith's powers coming. Good on Clines with that one. Best scene in the book, easily the scene with Barry in the nuclear room behind the faraday cages and his convo with the military guys. It was ratcheted with tension up to twelve. Great book, I've got EX-COMM on deck now.

I picked up Ex Heroes on a whim last year. It's not my usual kind of book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked it even more because it takes place in L.A. and I am familiar with all of the areas mentioned.

JUST FINISHED EX-PURGATORY....

Non-spoiler commentary...
Great book, great addition to the series. Builds nicely on some of the character elements we've seen so far.
Certainly a 'quieter' book that previous but after the massive kaboomage of EX-COM' it was a nice change.
Not that there isn't kaboom. Oh, there is indeed kaboom.

I wasn't sure Clines could pull this off... the start with George trapped in some sort of alternate-world where he's a boring janitor is very jarring.

But i trust Clines... his 14 showed me he can do slow boil very nicely and he didn't disappoint.

If you've enjoyed the series to date, the shift in tone and tempo may be a bit jarring, but i think you'll like it.

So this was great fun.

Seeing Gorgon and Banzai again, even sideways, was a nice touch.

Smith was a solid villain back in EX-PATS so neat to see him again. The way they brought him back was a bit weird and perhaps the explanation wasn't totally well handled, but it worked well enough and resolved the irritating Christine Nguyen character. Maybe.

Corpse Girl continues being awesome. Stuck in a wheelchair and depowered, she managed to save the day even so. And the way she did it... shooting George. 12 times. Oh, that was priceless.

The Stealth revelations were fascinating.... she was actually supposed to be a super-villain. Very interesting. Her need to 'confront' her father, knowing full well it wasn't her father, was so 'human' .
Her exit from the hotel, on the other hand, was superhuman.

Freedom didn't get much play again this time, not even getting as awesome a fight scene as he did last book. I sort of worry that Clines doesn't know quite what to do with him now.

Zzzap was minimal but stole most of his scenes. Amazingly, so did the Driver.

Danielle wasn't quite as downplayed, altho she was out of Cerberus the entire book. Cerberus tho'... that fight w George.... holy fuck that was wild. I was wondering how Clines would work in a big fight when there was no obvious big bad, but this worked nicely. And i loved the epilogue of Danielle starting the Mk II.

St George was the star of this book, no doubt, but his development was fairly as expected... doubts himself, doubts his power, finds it, finds his supermodel/superhero girlfriend, kicks ass. We didn't learn anything exactly new about him, but he carried the story nicely.

In the afterword he mentions that there are hints in here about book 5/ possibly 6.

I think one thing that stuck in my head is Banzai - Firstly, how did they all get to see so much of her when only George knew her (admittedly, possibly covered by Christine's powers - they were dreaming it up together)

But also - HOW DID SHE KNOW THE WORD ZOMBIE????????

So yeah, reckon something's up with that to be honest.
