That is new to me. "Coloured" is something that I would have previously classified as been at the same level of inappropiateness as "black" and "brown".

Eh, dark-skinned people (whose are the only opinions I care about) seem to use these terms the most often (say, on mainstream news shows): when speaking about American racism in general, they generally use "black and brown" or "dark-skinned", but when speaking about particular race groups, "black" is more common than "African-American"—and why not? it's nice and simple and not particularly derogatory, unless you use it as a noun, i.e. "blacks"—and "Hispanic" or "Latino" or "Indian" or "Arab" etc. are used more often than "brown". I don't know why; I just roll with it. It's probably different on Fox, which I have been watching more lately than I'd like, but I don't care what they do; it's probably wrong. In the US "colored" and "Negro" definitely have negative, or more precisely, backward connotations, but black people certainly used both terms commonly a few decades ago. I am uncomfortable with this new wave of non-black people using the other N word these days because of rap. Some black people seem to be okay with it; others say they tolerate it to be nice to you but hate it inside and bitch about it when you're not around.

I read it when you tweeted it. :p I can see Joff's wedding happening as early as you expect; I just don't think I'll like it because I'm hoping they'll take the opportunity to set it up well. There's so much to be done, especially after the break, to remind readers of the characterization of that event, and they really need to start concentrating heavily on other plotlines early on. They need to have Oberyn in ep 1 IMO. They need to visit Myrcella to develop Oberyn, especially considering more casual viewers barely remember Myrcella and certainly don't remember where she went or anything about Dorne. They need to have heavy action at the Wall. They need to kill Balon before Joff and develop the Greyjoys a bit. For the wedding itself Sansa, Margaery, Queen of Thorns, Cersei, Joff...they all need buildup. I would be happy with 3 or 4, but I'd prefer 4.

As for your thoughts on Tyrion, I mostly agree, but I do think they will want Tywin's death to come near the end. If there are 10 eps, I think it is most likely they'll do Tyrion's escape in ep 8, giving Dinklage ep 9 off, and starting his journey in ep 10. It's possible they'll do Tyrion's escape in ep 7, but I really doubt it will come any earlier than that.

I really hate the idea of Arya training in Westeros with Jaquen. If Tyrion is going across the Narrow Sea, and Dany has been over there all along, then what is the problem? I'll be really disappointed if they water her plotline down like that. I'll also be really disappointed if we don't get some Nymeria next season.

As for Jorah's treachery, why can't Barristan tell her about it? Was he not on the small council in the show or something? Wasn't that the reason he came in the first place—to protect her from the assassins he knew were being sent after her?

I will be upset if Asha (I don't care what they call her) isn't at the Kingsmoot, or if they don't have one at all.

(Not all of those are in response to Wert's opinions; some are in response to Elio's opinions. Also, don't necessarily expect Wert to answer.)

Agree with you on pretty much all of those. I think I read that Mace Tyrell is being cast as well, so we finally might see him at the wedding, along with some Tyrell/Martell enmity established.

I wonder if Ser Alliser will return to the show, and of course Janos Slynt with him, or if they're gonna have to change all that up. They never did the rotten hand in a jar thing at King's Landing.

I expect "winter is coming" to return as a theme at least somewhat (nobody has even said it in quite a while). And I think a nice ending visual would be Jaime looking out the window, after everything that goes down this season, and seeing it start to snow.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Didn't they? Thorne's GOT Wiki page says he did.

As far as I recall, they send him, but then there's only one King's Landing scene where they mention something like "someone from the Wall came down" and the meeting is brushed aside, and then never mentioned again.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

There was a scene with Tyrion and Throne where he tells them about the undead. And get's laughed at as the "proof" had rotted away (though what kind of proof ca a severed hand be?). If Arya stays in Westeros, that would be disappointing.

And a friend of mine keeps asking when the White Walkers will invade. I've told him that 5 books in, I'm wondering the same thing (not like he didn't spoil himself about a few things).

I haven't followed that link yet but going to Braavos is the best bit of arya's storyline. It'd be really annoying if they changed that.

Keen to find out what's happening with Asha, too, because, as you say, they appear to be altering her story as well as her name...

They send Alliser Thorne in the final episode of Season 1, but we never see him in KL in Season 2. Instead, Tyrion receives a letter from the Night's Watch with the same info and everyone laughs it off (apart from Tyrion). Neither Thorne or the hand show up in Season 2 or 3.

It's possible Thorne will return to Castle Black in S4 (with Slynt?), his trip having taken place entirely offscreen.

Indeed. I'd be annoyed as her Braavos storyline really is such a blast. I can see why they MIGHT not do it....but to be honest, one more location wouldn't be that hard to do, especially since they shoot in Morocco as it is, so other bits of the Mediterranean could be used, perhaps Rhodes or somewhere right on the sea itself to give it that Braavos flavor. Plus, seeing her sail underneath the statues at the harbour would just look so epic.

Wert has it right on Thorne. But to clarify, the primary worry for me is actor retention, not whether the show would arbitrarily decide to change things....they've been generally good so far, but I'm pretty much permanently spooked due to the Mountain and the Greatjon.

I think they will do Braavos, if for no other reason than to put it on the map in the opening credits. It's irresistible!

Braavos would look cool as hell on the opening map, true.

I really hope they do have Arya go to Braavos. They've already had a character from there (Syrio Forel), so it would be cool to make the connection. It's a really important part of Arya's story in the books.

Casting!

http://www.acting-au...s-season-4.html

Not a complete list yet, but the highlights:

Quote

There will be at least three new main roles being cast for season four. Oberyn Martell is an influential member of the Martell family. Mace Tyrell is the father of Loras and Margaery Tyrell. The great warrior Magnar of Thenn rounds out the first three new announced characters.

Among the talent returning for season four is Screen Actors Guild Awards nominee Emilia Clarke in the immensly popular role of Daenerys Targaryen. Four-time Saturn Award nominee Lena Headey is back as the beautiful yet greedy, cruel and manipulative Cersei Lannister. Golden Globe Award nominee Peter Dinklage continues his role as the intelligent and wity outcast Tyrion Lannister. Young Artist Awards nominee Maisie Williams returns as the wild and carefree Arya Stark. Irish Film and Television Awards nominee Michelle Fairley moves forward with her role as Catelyn Stark. English actress Natalie Dormer is back as Margaery Tyrell.

I recently found out that Dominic West turned down the role for Mance Rayder.

Damn it McNulty! The f*** did you do?

It would have given Mance a great backstory. He was doing a thorough ranging investigation to figure out what's behind the Others' resurgence. But the First Ranger keeps shutting down Mance's rangings because he would prefer them to do quick rip'n'raids against wildling camps so they could get quick stats for the Lord Commander. Mance keeps trying to go straight to the LC about this, but the First Ranger keeps on shutting him down with the "chain of command" speech. He finally gets fed up and turns his cloak.

I think C. Hinds is doing a great job with Mance in the small screen time he got. He has way more of a King vibe to me then West. His role as Caesar in Rome helps a lot.

Finally saw the finale...

The Small council scene with Joffrey's daddy comment was brilliantly done. Whoever wrote the dialogue for the Tywin/Tyrion exchange deserves an Emmy.

The Varys/Shae scene was interesting. I thought this was Varys acting in his 'what's best for the realm' role, but many seem to think Tyrion sent him. May be my knowledge from ADWD coloring impressions. Shae's declaration of love for Sansa and Tyrion really intensifies how her plot will develop next season. It would be a lovely twist if she cuddles up to Tywin to help Tyrion, only to have Tyrion misunderstand and kill her.

Jon's scene w Ygritte was nicely done. I think she deliberately didn't kill him but was still pissed enough to perforate him a bit.

The Hound and Arya's scenes were my favorite in the ep. Nicely, nicely done.

The Dany scene... meh, i'm not going to venture into that debate. In as much as it advanced her plot, it was fine but relatively unecesary.

Sam and Bran's meeting was fun.

Davos' scenes were very well done. Some great acting work there.

Yarosha charging off to rescue Theon... interesting in a 'that didn't happen in the books' kind of way, but what we've seen of her character didn't really support this. I did like her scene w Balon, where she just looked at him and he felt the need to keep responding to what she wasn't saying.

Theon's evolution to Reek was nicely handled, better than how the book just jumps to it eventually.

Overall, not my favorite season so far, but ten solid eps in a great show that keeps delivering.

I just rewatched the ep from Season 2 where Asha goes to Winterfell—pretty sure it was "Blackwater", GRRM's episode. She tells him a story about how when he was a baby, he cried and cried but when she went to his crib he looked up at her and smiled and stopped crying. Then she told him not to get himself killed. That seems like good enough support for her caring about him.

Yah, in spite of the natural Iron Islands hard cast of her personality, she seems to have had a sisterly soft spot for him...and I'm willing to bet the pleas he made to his father -- which didn't sway Balon at all (outwardly) -- actually did have an affect on Yara. I don't think the emotions trumped everything, which would be out of character, but the logic of Theon's pleas was sound and her care for him tipped the balance.

Caring not about her character motivations representations...watching her stand on that ship as they set out...was the badass Asha (Yara, whatever) I know from the books...and coupled with the Tywin / Tyrion scene and the Hound and Arya scene....this one was worth the price of admission.

That was a neat scene, and suggests we're going to get more Yara action in S4 than we did in bk 3. It does seem like they're transposing her storyline from DWD a bit.

I hope so. She did so little in books 3-5. Basically showed up for a shocker and then creeped the fuck out of Brienne. More deadCat would be neat.
