Yeah that was the same impression I got. Like, from an outside perspective, the way he presents his side of the affair seems pretty reasonable. He's trying to engage in dialogue and Sarkeesian insults him but there's just this slight tinge of self-centred smugness about his commentary that makes you weary.
On a side note, when you start looking through related videos there sure are a lot of people shit posting in video form on youtube.
Good to know it isn't just me who picked up on that. XD
And yes, YouTube is full of that kind of crap these days. The problem I have with it actually comes down to the way YouTube presents videos, though. Like, say I watch a couple of videos from the likes of Sargon of Akkad. At the very least, in the name of not isolating myself to an echo-chamber, it makes sense to listen to other opinions and perspectives, right?
Here's the problem: once you watch about 5 videos from the likes of Sargon and more open MRA types...my "recommended" videos page suddenly looks like that of an angry neo-Nazi. The algorithm they are using is apparently so aggressive, that once you get into the ecosystem of those kinds of videos, you can't get out. I can actually see how effective this must be in shaping some people's opinions - after all, if you find ten million videos of people agreeing with each other, and can't really find any dissenting voices, it can be pretty persuasive. Ironically, this does not appear to happen quite so aggressively if you, say, watch Sarkeesian or other folk on that side of the issue.
Now, I understand from a business perspective that YouTube probably does, in fact, want people to be in an echo-chamber. It helps keep people on your platform. But for me, it just makes me wary of clicking on too many videos, no matter how interesting the title sounds, in case the algorithms decide I must be into that side of the debate and floods me with endless recommendations for similar rubbish (especially if the video itself is actually not well argued, this gets even more annoying). So my YouTube is more or less a voluntary echo-chamber of non-seriousness. Except for LastWeekTonight, because I will watch the hell out of that. (Though again, interesting to note that watching a LOT of LastWeekTonight doesn't spam up my recommended videos with "left wing" propaganda - whereas throw on some innocently titled video like "GamerGate: A debate" and next thing I know I'm drowning in alt-right nonsense...)
Makes it very hard to be balanced in one's YouTube content diet, is all I'm saying.
