I did initially too. It wasn't til something clicked in my brain that I realized.

I really find the plot contrivance of keeping Ragnar's closest friends in the dark in order to "surprise" the viewer pretty lame.

But yeah, one thing that keeps Vikings from being totally amazing is it often times goes off the rails with something, and it really annoys me when it has no purpose or any follow up/closure. It's like they just inserted it so the show meets the 60 min requirement or something.

I finished season 3 last night and Mother of whatever the FUCK! Episode 8 was GLORIOUS! Everything about that episode was practically executed perfectly! I was on the edge of my seat the whole episode, and that my friends, does not happen often with a tv show for me.

Yeah, I thinking that this episode, along with "Blood Eagle" puts this show on the top of my absolute favourite show. I'm sorry, Jim "Jesus Techsupport" Caviezel, you've been usurped by the Vikings!

I think the ONLY thing working against this shows end-game will be:

MAJOR Real History Spoilers (seriously, don't read unless you wanna know what is LIKELY to happen to the characters on this show!)

The fact that we know that Rollo and his French wife not only survive, but build a dynasty that will eventually lead to his descendant, William The Conqueror. That Floki is ostensibly the man who will found Iceland (with his daughter dying along the way). Bjorn doesn't die until he's an old man. Ivar and Ubba Conquer half the norther English continent before they are stopped by the Saxons. Ragnar is killed by King Aella in that snake pit they unceremoniously showed us in S1. Aethelstan's illegitimate, pious son Alfred (The Great) eventually unites England under one king. We pretty much know what happens to everyone here. And people like Floki will (probably) get off of being killed as a result. Unless they massively change the game up in service to a more compelling story...the ending might have some teeth pulled on what could have been some heroic (or deserved) deaths. I'm not sure viewers who don't know the supposed history here would be as impressed by some of those ends?

It's not like they're constrained by 'real' history.

They do seem to try and at least have some small basis, but at root, a Viking show being filmed in Ireland doesn't have to worry about letting a little thing like fact get in the way of a good story.
