I haven't particularly planned what I'm going to read, I just want to get my TRP down to 50. It's at 114 at the moment. I should be able to do it, if only I could stop buying more books!

The Incredible Kitsu, on 31 December 2013 - 06:25 AM, said:

My new resolution is to not be so neurotic about my reading schedule this year. 2011 and 2012 I set myself a 2500 page a month reading goal and chose my monthly trp and broke down what I'd need to read per day to get through that pile and hit my goal at the beginning of each month. In 2013 I took that a step further. I cut the goal down to 2000 pages a month, however I typed up a list of what I'd read in order for the ENTIRE YEAR. With pages counts per day. IN JANUARY.

This year, I'm only going to record what I actually read each day at the end of the day as a kind of reading log. I'm curious to see if I'll beat last years numbers when I'm not so crazy about it.

This was a huge success for me. I ended up with an extra 8k pages at the end of the year. Following this policy again this year, but adding "read a little every day" as I ended up with 61 "didn't read" days.

Oh, it's not super serious anymore. It used to be when I was plotting it out way in advance. Now it's more of a curiosity thing. All I'm really doing is writing down what page number I finish on, and tracking my pages per day. The only thing I'm expanding on this year is making sure I read at least a little every day even if it's only ten pages or so. Honestly, I'm one of those people that needs a little alone time every day to be happy and reading is the way I've found I enjoy spending that time most.

Fuck this thread. I'm not even going to attempt to set a bar with my turtle pace these days. I thought the more you read in life the faster you got at it? Not so with me.

You can teach yourself to read faster, mostly by not sounding out in your mind what you're reading. The question is, is it worth buzzing through books just so you can say 'I've read it', or do you prefer to go slowly and enjoy them..

My reading goal for the year is a book a week. I started in December and so far I have finished on time. I have a huge to read pile and I thought that making a goal would push me to read more and so far it's working.

To read in 2016:

The Theft of Swords - Michael Sullivan

Heroes Die - Stover

Night Angel Trilogy - Brent Weeks

The Belgariad - Eddings

Empire in Black and Gold - Adrian Tchaikovsky

Black company books - Glen Cook I only read the first trilogy so I want to finish

The Shadow Campaigns books - Django Wexler I read the first one

If I enjoy these series I will get the other books so I can finish them. I also will read any new Brandon Sanderson, Mark Lawrence, and the new Gentleman Bastards book. This is just the tip of the iceberg so hopefully I can reach my goal.

My entire TBR would take too long to put down here

Start and finish Bakker
Finally read Mark Lawrence.
Read more of GGK
Finish Black Company

Also a bunch of other series and authors which I will copy over from Goodreads

Quite unexpectedly I totally blew these

1. I did not finish Bakker. Only two books of his first trilogy.
2. I read one trilogy by Lawrence, not the second one.
3. I bounced off Tigana twice (What is wrong with that book)
4. Haven't touched Glen Cook

So keeping this in mind, time for my more detailed 2017 breakdown

A. Read and complete my Classics Challenge:

  • Gone With the Wind -Margaret Mitchell
  • Bleak HouseCharles - Dickens
  • The Idiot - Dostoevsky
  • The Divine Comedy - Dante
  • Ivanhoe - Walter Scott
  • A Tree Grows in Brooklyn - Betty Smity
  • Emma - Jane Austen
  • Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte
  • The Godfather - Mario Puzo
  • How Green was my Valley - Richard Llewellyn
  • To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
  • The Unbearable Lighness of Being - Milan Kundera
  • Razor's Edge - Somerset Maugham
  • Flowers for Algernon - Daniel Keyes
  • Jude the Obscure - Thomas Hardy
  • Aenid - Virgil
  • The Color Purple - Alice Walker
  • The Diary of a Young Girl - Anne Frank
  • Remains of the Day - Kazuo Ishiguro
  • The Picture of Dorian Grey - Oscar Wilde
  • Fahrenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury
  • Slaughterhouse 5 - Kurt Vonnegut
  • Heart of Darkness - Joseph Conrad
  • Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck

B. Target Specific Authors
  • Finish Janny Wurts' Wars of Light and Shadow. (This is a big one)
  • Finish Bakker
  • Read at least another three books of Black Company
  • Read at least two books of Ursula K Leguin
  • Read at least two books of GG Kay
  • Finish Mark Lawrence's second trilogy
  • Finish Tad Williams' Memory Sorrow and Thorn
  • Finish Alastair Reynolds' Poseidon's Children trilogy
  • Read at least one book by China Mieville

C. Existing series:

Read and finish 23 books coming out in 2017 as continuations to existing reads

D. TBR

Finish at least 10% of TBR: Currently means 21 books.

SOLDIERS LIVE

BRIAN STAVELY – PROVIDENCE OF FIRE

LAST MORTAL BOND

BRENT WEEKS – THE BROKEN EYE

I think it might have been booted about before. But what about a book club idea.

throw out a book idea, you have like 5/6 weeks to read, but can post opinions and dicussion points (spoilered) at any times
