I think it might have been booted about before. But what about a book club idea.

throw out a book idea, you have like 5/6 weeks to read, but can post opinions and dicussion points (spoilered) at any times

I'd be interested in something like this around here.

.........soooooooo I came here to report that my reading goal for 2017 is to read Tigana. I'm not even fucking joking.

So, uh, there's that. ANYWAY

On my phone I will finish Graham Austin-King's Fae: The Great Hunt, and then I will read Laura Hughes's 'Danse Macabre' novelette before starting and finishing one of the following:

Peter Newman - The Vagrant
Michael R. Fletcher - Beyond Redemption
Brian Staveley - The Emperor's Blades
Dyrk Aston - Paternus
Daniel Potter - Off Leash

Physical books, I'm going to read Tigana first, then hopefully two of the following:
Fall of Light (I know, I know, shut up it's scary dense and I have new children and am busy and tired)
Malice - John Gwynne
American Gods - Gaiman
Thousand Names - Django Wexler
Sharp Ends - Abercrombie
Author of Purge of Ashes.
Sayer of "And Nature shall not abide."

My entire TBR would take too long to put down here

Start and finish Bakker
Finally read Mark Lawrence.
Read more of GGK
Finish Black Company

Also a bunch of other series and authors which I will copy over from Goodreads

Quite unexpectedly I totally blew these

1. I did not finish Bakker. Only two books of his first trilogy.
2. I read one trilogy by Lawrence, not the second one.
3. I bounced off Tigana twice (What is wrong with that book)
4. Haven't touched Glen Cook

So keeping this in mind, time for my more detailed 2017 breakdown

A. Read and complete my Classics Challenge: Done

  • Gone With the Wind -Margaret Mitchell
  • Bleak HouseCharles - Dickens
  • The Idiot - Dostoevsky
  • The Divine Comedy - Dante
  • Ivanhoe - Walter Scott
  • A Tree Grows in Brooklyn - Betty Smity
  • Emma - Jane Austen
  • Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte
  • The Godfather - Mario Puzo
  • How Green was my Valley - Richard Llewellyn
  • To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
  • The Unbearable Lighness of Being - Milan Kundera
  • Razor's Edge - Somerset Maugham
  • Flowers for Algernon - Daniel Keyes
  • Jude the Obscure - Thomas Hardy
  • Aenid - Virgil
  • The Color Purple - Alice Walker
  • The Diary of a Young Girl - Anne Frank
  • Remains of the Day - Kazuo Ishiguro
  • The Picture of Dorian Grey - Oscar Wilde
  • Fahrenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury
  • Slaughterhouse 5 - Kurt Vonnegut
  • Heart of Darkness - Joseph Conrad
  • Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck

B. Target Specific Authors
  • Finish Janny Wurts' Wars of Light and Shadow. (This is a big one) Done
  • Finish Bakker Done
  • Read at least another three books of Black Company Nope
  • Read at least two books of Ursula K Leguin Nope
  • Read at least two books of GG Kay One Done - Tigana
  • Finish Mark Lawrence's second trilogy Done
  • Finish Tad Williams' Memory Sorrow and Thorn Done
  • Finish Alastair Reynolds' Poseidon's Children trilogy Done
  • Read at least one book by China Mieville Nope

C. Existing series:

Read and finish 23 books coming out in 2017 as continuations to existing reads Done

D. TBR

Finish at least 10% of TBR: Currently means 21 books. Nope

This went well for the most part, will edit with this years plan

I have simple goals this year:
The final Fitz trilogy from Robin Hobb
Book of Dust and the misc. HDM novellas
Red Sister
R. Scott Bakker's Second Apocalypse (does this series have miscellany scattered about?)
After that, who knows?

I also vow -- on Salt Man Z's very reputation I swear this -- that I will not buy any books in 2018, solely concentrating on my TRP. If I fail in this, may it be a stain on Salt Man Z's name for all time.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

I need to get through the top of my reading pile at least.
Godblind - Anna Stephens
Dread Empire - Glen Cook
Ian C. Esslemont most of it.
Persepolis Rising - James S.A. Corey
Master of Rome
Uprooted
Victious
A War in Crimson Embers - Alex Marsall
Traitor Baru Comorant - Seth Dickinson
A Closed and Common Orbit - Becky Chambers
Raven Strategem - Yoon Ha Lee
The Library at Mount Char
Warmaster
Re-read Dies in the Fire and its zillion sequels as I haven't read the last 4-5 or so.

Then there are some books that will likely arrive in 2018 that will enter at the top or high in the pile
The Infernal Battalion - Django Wexler
Thin Air - Richard Morgan
Wrath of Empire - Brian McClellan
Emergence - CJ Cherry
Marked - Benedict Jacka
Grey Sister - Mark Lawrence
Lies SLeping - Ben Aaranovitch

And probably some more that I don't yet know about. Someone with info on 2018 should start a what will appear in the bookstores 2018 tread.

A good start but the goal is to exceed 2017's 76 books by at least one or two.

Because of the costs of daycare, and prospective house buying....I will also attempt to not buy ANYTHING new this year (aside from the one book I purchased yesterday for fear it would go out of print), and just trudge through my already unwieldy To-Read pile...since books are my main "extravagance" and I have plenty of books in the TRP to occupy me for a year.

Getting books for my birthday form others that I request...is fine though. Just to give it a silver lining.

We will see how long I last. I hope to make it.

I worry that I will again buy way too many ebooks in 2018.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

Same same, only along with ebooks include earbooks, ecomics/GNs, and dead tree stuff i will never, ever, ever, ever, get to.

Fucking Humble/Book/Comic Bundle will get me at least twice.
Six+ idiots on this forum will mercilessly pressure me into buying some crap i won't get to for at least a year.
Audible will haunt me with expiring credits and 2-for-1 promos.
Kindle will have sales.
So will kobo but fuck that site they're too slow.
Authors on my pre-order list will publish new stuff.
Collected editions of comics i follow will be released.
I will pass by random second hand bookstores and decide to 'just have a look around'.
Friends who still read dead tree will pass me crates of stuff i want to read but will struggle to get to and remain awake during.

...and then there's all that whiskey....
