Trying to keep it real...

the obvious reads for the year are
GUN MACHINE (in progress)

Read it. Loved it.
Whole other level of Ellis clever.

Quote

MEMORY OF LIGHT

Read it. Enjoyed. Addressed in detail in the ded-thread.

Quote

RED COUNTRY

Same.

Quote

...then whenever they show up...
UNHOLY CONSULT
FALL OF LIGHT
SKIN GAME
and whatever Morgan's next LFFH book is called.

Still waiting on these. Bump to 2014.

Quote

Then we have the 'commitments'...
Hearn's TRICKED and TRAPPED, because i have them and i just read the first three in the series.

Read. Liked enuf to get the next one whenever it comes out.

Quote

The RIYRIA REVELATIONS, because they've been sitting in the TRP and i keep almost starting them.

Finally, and left a satisfied customer.

Quote

And finally ANUBIS GATE, UNDER HEAVEN and the KETTY JAY trilo, because they're sitting in the TRP and have priority on an 'if i died and didn't read those i'd be bummed' basis.

Goin into 2014, all in the same place as last year. Dammit.

Also missed...

Quote

and because Ment mentioned...

...Lavie Tidhar

I'm reminded that i have THE BOOKMAN and CAMERA OBSCURA sitting the the TRP and demanding my eyetime.

Which i did in fact read. and mostly enjoyed.

Thus, for 2014...

ANYTHING by SE (Willful Child, Fall of Light), ICE (Assail), Butcher (Skin Game), Morgan (The Dark Defiles) or Stover (no idea but i can dream).

Jacka's Alex Verus 2 and 3... CURSED and TAKEN
Tidhar's Bookman Histories 3, THE GREAT GAME
Powers' ANUBIS GATE
Kay's UNDER HEAVEN and RIVER OF STARS
Campbell's LOST FLEET second and third series' (three and two books respectively)
Woodings' KETTY JAY series (all 4)
Lovegrove's AGE OF ZEUS

...seems like a good list to work from.

If this comes out next year, pretty much my only certain 'Will Read', aside from the rest of the Book of the New Sun, which I've taken a break half way through to concentrate on my PhD. Though I should probably read FoD also.

As much of Eternal Champion books as I can (and there's a ton)- re-read "war Hound and the World's Pain"--more are on standby as laptop reading.

- Kraken by Mieville Failed to Buy--it's not available anywhere. read "Railsea" instead. This is moving to 2014 to reads
Revelation space books by Reynolds- Read. Also read "Chasm City"
-buy the first 3 Culture books (saw a neat boxed set, but gonna wait for chapters to host its phenomenal "buy 3 get 1 free" book events) Read. Will Buy More
-finally get through the first 2 Dark tower books in French, so as to move on and read the rest of the series. still nope. Got through a few chapters in "Gunslinger". will persist
-read "The heroes" Read. "Red Country" bought, but want a BSC re-read first
-take a look at the Ketty Jay books Read "Retribution Falls". Will order more, since can't find in stores
-Check out Asher's new space-stuff Nope, finished Spatterjay, books and read the Technician, but didn't start the new series yet
-keep reading "The Secret City" books by Panov. nope, finshed enclaves though and bought 2 spinoffs for a light actiony fix
-Keep reading Perumov's Consistent stuff (mostly Godsdoom 2, since that's now projected as 6+ books) Read first 2 "Godsdoom-2" books. Got the "1000 years of Hroft" duology in the pile
-Look at Stephenson's Baroque Cycle Read. "cryptonomicon to be read soon. Also Bk 1 of Mongoliad
-Read Corvus Possibly wrap up the Macht trilo - Read Corvus. thought it was meh. will buy "Kings of morning" when there's a discount
-give Codex Alera another try. -nope, still to do
-buy Sanderson's series after Mistborn and give that book a try. A new sanderson fan. Read Way of Kings, Warbreaker and Alloy of law.

current series to keep up with once they are out in mmpb:
-Scholes "psalms of Isaak" - waiting for "Requiem to hit mmpb
-teh Dresdencrack - Still gotta read "side jobs". Up to "Cold days" in the main sequence
-Tchaikovsky's "Shadows of the Apt" Need to order "War Master's Gate". "Air War" was great
-Lawrence's "Thorns" stuff Waiting for "emperor" to go MMPB. Series is ok
-Stross' Laundry Files -- read "Apocalypse codex". want more.
Baker's stuff- waiting like everyone else
Peter Orullian's "unremembered" stuff - no word on this.

-new authors I'm likely to be interested in checking out:
Tim Wagonner's "nekropolis chronicles" - Read. OK, not great.
Anne Lyle- "Night's Masque" - read bk 1. not impressed.
Alliette de Bodard -Need to order, can't find to buy.
Lavie Tidhar-Read. ranging from Brilliant to good. Will buy more.

And, naturally, the "must buy immediately" list:
-[Malaz books Read FoD and BaB. Waiting on Assail and Kharkanas2 just like everyone else

Also read:
-more of Lovegrove's Godpunk books: "Age of Aztec" was nice
-Gavin Smith-"Veteran"+ "War in Heaven" was an absolutely brilliant cyberpunk/sci-fi duology. My favourites of 2013 (Baroque cycle a v. close second, but these 2 take it as recent books)
-Read more Angry Robot Omnibuses- "Empire of the Blood" (ok, not great), and "Knights of Breton Court" (great).
-moved further along the "Wars of Light and Shadow" cycle after re-reading the first 2 books. Another series I will be following.
-Finished Tom Lloyd's "Twilight Reign" series. And it got progressively better, very glad I stuck with it past the first two books.
-Finished Chris Evans' "Iron Elves" trilo
-Read "Les Miserables", and "Tale of Two cities"
-Read the first expanse Book and bought the second
-bought "Bitter Seeds" by Tregillis, though haven't gotten round to reading it yet.
-Read "The Dreaming Void" by Hamilton. Now i need to go back and read "Pandora Star" and "Judas Unchained"
-Read "The Decline and Fall of the British Empire". Have Fukuyama's book "Trust" that I bought for my father I need to borrow as well as "Western Civilisation on Trial"-still need to read that.
-Started reading "Years of Rice and Salt" by Kim Stanley Robinson. if it turns out to be solid, will probably invest more money in his books.

Should we start a new thread for 2014 resolutions or continue here?

My new resolution is to not be so neurotic about my reading schedule this year. 2011 and 2012 I set myself a 2500 page a month reading goal and chose my monthly trp and broke down what I'd need to read per day to get through that pile and hit my goal at the beginning of each month. In 2013 I took that a step further. I cut the goal down to 2000 pages a month, however I typed up a list of what I'd read in order for the ENTIRE YEAR. With pages counts per day. IN JANUARY.

This year, I'm only going to record what I actually read each day at the end of the day as a kind of reading log. I'm curious to see if I'll beat last years numbers when I'm not so crazy about it.

I've only got a few targets for the next year.

Hopefully read the Erikson I'm still to get around to.
The Devils by Dostoyevsky.
The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Gaiman.
Some more Ian Banks.
More Pratchett isn't really a target so much as an inevitability (though I didn't read much this year so would like to read more).
A book about post communist eastern Europe I've been meaning to read for a while.
Our Man in Havana by Graham Greene.

There are probably a few more I can't remember atm.

2014 - if they end up getting released:

Mark Lawrence - Prince of Fools
Anthony Ryan - Tower Lord
Jim Butcher - Skin Game
Steven Erikson - Fall of Light
Richard Morgan - The Dark Defiles
Joe Abercrombie - Half a King

These are the ones I cannot wait for and will be bought day of release.

Sure there are many I have missed though.

edit

Plus series I need to get around to...

Start China Mieville, more KJ Parker, more Pratchett, finish the Coldfire Trilogy and start some Elric! Also the urban fantasy series by Tad WIlliams... I could go on!

Great stuff there though I'd add (with fingers twisted to breaking) Dooors of Stone, the Unholy Consult, and Winds of Winter.

Also hoping for the next Rothfuss though with no release date I held off adding it to the list, if that arrives then it is definitely a day of release purchase!

Cannot get away with Bakker, stopped after the third book, have the 4th purchased but not really interested at the minute!

Winds of Winter... optimistic haha!

Could say that I am also looking forward to Words of Radiance but not sure if will buy it straight away...

ICE and Assail, not bought BoB yet but how can I not get Assail after everything!

Forgot about Words of Radiance. While not a huge fan of Sanderson's prose, I do enjoy his worlds. Really looking forward to this. Also looking forward to On the Steel Breeze by Alastair Reynolds; though a 2013 release, the audiobook won't be available till this summer. Also, any Peter Grant goodness and James S.A. Corey (and Daniel Abraham in general), Kate Griffin, James Vandermeer, and Luke Skull. Hoping for some new Harkaway, David Wong, Ernest Clines, and Hannu Rannaananaojugu (Quantum Thief guy).

I am so delighted by the fashion this board nurtures and celebrates the fineness of the Finnish language! ;)

Resolutions!
 • Finish Malazan after two years and the ICE companion books
 • The First Law trilogy (started)
 • Stephen Donaldson's short story collections and re-read the Chronicles for the zillionth time
 • Lawrence's Thorns trilogy (first part read)
 • Finally take a glance at some Scott Lynch
 • Dust the non-fiction TRPFH and read at least 4-5 items of something
 • Sanderson's Mistborn #5 and Worlds of Radiance
 • Abhorsen #4
 • (semi-musical) Follow through the entire Der Ring des Nibelungen with an English libretto, as personal German skills stink like a horse two weeks dead (started)
 • More non-English books
 • Mystery resolution that may include anything and liable to heavy bandwagon behavior
 • Brent Weeks (because everyone and their favorite MLPs aspire to be him)?
Managed 45 (new) books last year so ought to be doable.

I've set myself a target of 40 books for the year, titles not yet known. Unsure if I'll make it, but with 7 weeks of holidays and several flights in that period, I have a few catch-up options.

Related discussion over the the READING AT T'MOMENT thread forces me to clarify that the first book likely is worth reading, the second radically less so and the third will just make you self-angry for having read the second and then forcing yourself to read the third.

Geez, Ment makes us all look like under-achievers.

New books coming out (hopefully) this year:
Mark Lawrence: Prince of Fools
Benedict Jacka: Hidden
Jim Butcher: Skin Game

To finish:
Mieville's Kraken
The second book in the Farseer trilogy
Wicked
Emperor of Thorns

Absolutely must read:
Pratchett's Raising Steam

With this year being my final year of university, anything else I get around to will be icing on the cake.
... a nature generally described as happy-go-fuck-yourself.
