Some complained about it as it's not nice to the characters and some of their plot trajectories don't go the way people expected after book 1. I have read books 1-3 and I liked them all, I have not read the 4th...and there is a second series that takes place later on with different characters I've not read either.

The magic is cool AF, and there's some people you can really root for and others to really hate...

It's not grimdark, but it's grim dark adjacent for sure.

$3 is probably worth it to find out if it's your bag or not.
