Not sure where else to post this....but Amazon is up to its fuckery again (no, not Bezos licking Trumps B-hole)...and they are discontinuing the ability to download your purchased ebooks onto anything BUT your kindle/app...which they claim is about piracy (it's not)...it's about keeping you in their ecosystem when all the other major eReaders (Kobo, Boox ect.) are increasingly just devices allowing you into any ecosystem (Boox is essentially an E-ink tablet at this point and you can use amazon or any other app including manga stuff) without walls...so in their effort to close you all the way in, on Feb 26th 2025 they are discontinuing the "Download and transfer VIA usb" option that's been available since the devices inception. After that you will be locked into only downloading amazon books onto your kindle and it's operating more like say Spotify than anything else...I dunno about you but I didn't sign up for a rental service.

Anyways, this is your warning to download all your stuff now onto a computer (you can then use Calibre to convert them to other formats from the amazon format, so they can be read on any device)....

And Amazon makes it so you can only do one download at a time from a dropdown menu for each book. I dunno about others, but I had something like 787 books on there...so that would have taken forever.

So here's a handy YouTube guide on how to batch download them using a small java script...this worked super well and was super easy, so I now have all my ebooks from amazon on my laptop and my USB drive and I will be switching devices at some point in the near future. Bye Amazon.

Dark Horse Comics is doing one better -- they are killing their digital service completely. With basically no warning. Including, within about a month, the inability to download comics you've purchased (I mean licensed), like permanently. If the device you have them on bricks, they're gone for good. You'll be able to read what's in your bookshelf using a browser, but even that's only until the summer. https://digital.darkhorse.com/faq/
I didn't realize Dark Horse was bought by Embracer Group a few years ago, the same vultures who've ransacked the video game industry in recent years.

Holy shit, I have the entirety of the Mignolaverse digital...I better get to downloading. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm SO pissed about the DH thing. They nuked the android app without warning last year, which leaves me w no way to dl about 700 comics. Am trawling all kinds of ugly sites trying to find something that may work, so far all i have is a murderously complex sideload of an ios app followed by individual dl of each title. I may just go full yaaar on this out of pure vengeance.

The amazon thing is less irritating simply bcs on a practical level i've only ever used the kindle app, don't have a reader wasn't going to get one, so online access was all i ever expected and unlike DH, amazon is unlikely to vanish or cull my library (anytime soon).

Bezos being at the inauguration front row tells me that I'd worry about the titles you have that might be by LGBTQ+ authors or the things that Project 2025 expressly forbids...I have a sneaky suspicion a culling of available books that go against the MAGA/P-2025 agenda is coming.

I grabbed everything I've ever bought and just stored them on my devices and USB sticks. I'm not switching from my kindle right now, but in the next few months I will and I want to be able to side load them. Amazon can eat my ass.

Funny you should say that, since just today as the hands-off owner of the Washington Post he got rid of their opinion editor and announced that going forward the opinion section will be focused "every day" on two pillars: 'personal liberties' and 'free markets'. Not to get too side-tracked. On point, I have less concern about Amazon in this regard, though it is kinda funny that their most famous case of removing digital books from buyers was for 1984 and Animal Farm. You're not wrong that it's mask-off time with him.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Hmm yes. Nothing says personal liberty like firing your opinion editor and anyone who doesn't agree with you.

You're not wrong, but my account is with amazon.ca so it should be safe until the invasion.

Oh I don't think Regions would stop Bezos if he chose to bow down to daddy Trump and 2025...but we will see.

UNDER THE EYE OF A BIG BIRD by Hiromi Kawakami (which has been long listed for the Booker Prize) is on for $2.

Her previous novel STRANGE WEATHER IN TOYKO is in the top 3 books I read last year. Just a stunningly interesting and uncomplicated voice in fiction.

I kind of wish they'd translated the title as Under the Eye of Big Bird...

Oh wait, the Japanese title is:

大きな O-o-ki-na = big
鳥 tori = bird
に ni = by
さらわれないよう sarawarenaiyō = snatched away-don't be-try

Try Not to Be Snatched Away by Big Bird

Large Bird---Snatched Away by It to Not Be, Try!
