Just noticed two pre-release fantasy ebooks free with Amazon Prime until end of April:

'Epic fantasy
The Druid
Jeff Wheeler
[...] Wall Street Journal bestselling author of the Muirwood and Kingfountain novels.'

'Wall Street journal bestselling', WTF? Never heard of him, probably too genre convention bound and not literary-ish or philosophical enough for my tastes.

OTOH it's about a druid, which is mildly interesting. (Extra points if they transform into cats.) And 'Muir' could be a reference to Edwin Muir, maybe?

'Literary
The Last Goddess: A Novel

Last in a centuries-old lineage of healing women, Dora Idesová was raised by her aunt Surmena in the White Carpathians. Resistant to superstition, Dora grew up hearing stories of the "goddesses" who were said to conjure love and curses and, through divine connection, cure the spirit and the body. Now an academic, Dora is researching the tales that for generations spellbound the hillside where she grew up. As the mysteries become truths, they reveal a stunning discovery that reaches back from the witch trials of the seventeenth century through Nazi-occupied Germany. Embarking on an emotional journey, Dora is about to find out how deeply and fatefully she is entwined with secret tradition.

Beautifully weaving together fact, folklore, and fiction, Kateřina Tučková draws on the stories of her ancestors to explore the extraordinary history of goddesses who walked the earth.'
'"Gerta's main strength is its lyrical language, translated exquisitely from the original Czech into English [...] The nimble text elevates the narrative and evokes deep emotions, while succinct descriptions capture Gerta's—and her country's—pitiable condition."'

'"Tučková has tackled one [of] the most difficult chapters in European history, one that has been influencing the relationship between two nations for decades. It's a tale of prejudice, of exclusion and collective shame. Gerta is both a disturbing novel and a wonderful piece of literature that could easily become a classic."'

'It's Discovery of Witches meets All the Light We Cannot See. Come for the possibility of magic and stay for the deep feelings of connection created by family, place, and customs.'

- translation might not be as good---especially for conveying literary qualities
- original (I guess?) is 'award-winning and internationally bestselling' fwiw (is some of that in translation?)
- 'deep feelings of connection created by family, place, and customs'... not my cup of meat so much (though I don't begrudge).

Probably not going to bother reading either, since I generally prefer audiobooks (for fantasy or fiction... not so much for mathematics).

Jeff Wheeler

This guys is a self-pub I think, and his stuff has been on the ebook sale lists for like 6 months at least, so he may not be all that great...but he seems persistent in that he keeps his books on sale to get noticed/readership.

Yeah, I feel like every week at least one Jeff Wheeler book shows up on my Kindle deals emails for free.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"
