This is definitely something the movie didn't handle well, but looking at the galactic map QuickTidal gave us, the BB-8 portion is squarely in the "Unknown Areas" portion of the galactic map.

The part BB-8 had couldn't be chewed upon by astronomical robots/scripts because it's entirely new to the databases.

I liked it! A lot. But I have to admit, I didn't feel the star wars magic. I'm not exactly sure what went wrong, but afterwards I had the feeling that I could just as well have seen it on TV, because I didn't get the same excitement I used to get from watching Star Wars. I give it 8 stars out of 10.

This film was fucking awesome. Absolutely class. Right up there with one of the best I think. I'd need to watch it a few more times to see were I'd rank it but initial impression was 10/10.

I laughed. I whooped. I cried. Great all the way through. Great acting, great scenes, great DROID moments. Very much like a new hope I think in terms of story line but that's not a negative.

I actually missed the Han-to-Chewie "Oh, YOU'RE Cold?" the first viewing (everyone was laughing at the "that's not how the force works!" Joke)...but I caught it the second time and laughed my butt off.

On a second viewing I noticed how calculating BB-8 is. During the run on Jakku, he looks back and then forward and then back and then forward as he's running.

And in Maz's Castle when Rey goes down stairs, he looks down at the step in front of him, drops down, looks down, drops down, loooks down, drops down.

SO cute.

I mentioned that Carrie looked ruff but she looks better then she did the past 10 yrs. however her delivery of Leia wasn't all that great honestly. She's pretty wooden with it in fact but on my 1st go it the nostalgia from old Leia was just in overdrive to really take it in. Carrie hasn't really acted in a while and it shows atleast to me. I'm hoping for a return to form from now to 2019 when we get the next 2.

She was fine when moving. It was the scenes with Han where they stood still and looked at each other that dragged. It's kinda hard to convey everything they were supposed to in a way that makes sense for this tone of movie.

I think this is where Ford's broken foot came into things. Having them stand still means he's not stumping around on it.

To be fair, it was media reviews that loved the first film, and young people. While I don't deny I enjoyed it, I could see its flaws even back then, just as I can with episode 7. It's just that 7 has a lot less, and has a much more 'traditional' feel to it - which is what everyone wanted after the prequels. *shrug*
It may eventually have a lot less excitement around it, but who can say. The EU became obviously mostly junk in hindsight too. XD

Saw it last night--it was super fun but far to derivative of existing Star Wars material to be a great film. I get that's what some Star Wars fan wanted but its a bit boring. I really enjoyed the new characters--though I'm a bit disappointed Finn isn't a force user, I had thought he was going to be a new Jedi but I'm still pretty happy with Rey. The best part, however, for me was still the score--the use of the 'Jedi' motif throughout gave me chills.

So, after waiting a week more than this entire forum and the entire world except China, Star Wars finally came to my city today, and I saw it First Day, First Show.

Here's my experience, or the parts that stand out the most.

It was the earliest show, at 8.50 AM on a cold Christmas morning and naturally the audience was mostly hard core Star Wars fans. There was a lot of conversation about Luke and Han and what would the Dark Side look like.

Some people were still settling into their seats when the iconic Star Wars intro begins with a glorious blast of music. Two girls who were yet to take their seats in the row behind me squeaked and almost fell over.

The movie starts with the stormtroopers blasting a village, and Poe giving the important data to the droid. Already shades of Episode 4 were becoming apparent. Kylo Ren makes an entry, nowhere near as imposing as Vader, but immediately makes up for it by force-stopping a blaster bolt.

Something new: for the first time ever in the movies an imperial soldier shows individuality. Finn deserts, taking Poe with him. They crash, my friends assume Poe died, but the first rule of fantasy is no one is dead unless you see the body(and maybe not even then)

The director clearly went out of his way to make Rey a strong heroine. She quickly demonstrates that she needs very little help.

The hall cheered when the 'piece of garbage' turned out to be the Millenium Falcon. The cheered even louder when Han Solo and Chewbacca finally make their entry. I was grinning like an idiot.

Rey's origin and history remain a frustrating mystery. Her vision when she touched the Lightsaber was probably of Luke on the night when Kylo Ren turned,

The Imperials(first order) demonstrate their new weapon, and already I am wondering how they are going to blow it up. They attack and take Rey, but the X-wings counter attack. I probably saw it coming a couple of seconds ahead of my friends because as soon as they said "scramble all squads" I was thinking that this had to be quite serious.

The rescue plan is made, and of course there is a way to blow up the giant weapon. Meanwhile Kylo tries to interrogate Rey, botches it totally and unlocks her force potential. She reverses the situation and gets a nice swap in at him. She then uses force mind trick to escape, once again demonstrating that she does not need to be rescued.

Han and Chewie enter the oscillator. They separate and I get cold chills. The view of the catwalk, Han alone, Kylo on the prowl... and I am thinking "Oh fuck they are going to do an Obi wan" Han calls out and approaches him. I am chewing my hand, the light dims, the saber crackles. The man in front of me jerks back so hard his seat hits my knee. A girl behind me screams. The guy beside me drops his popcorn. Han Solo dies.

The Oscillator explodes. The X wings close in for the kill. Kylo takes out Fin. Rey calls on the force, and in probably the most brutal lightsabre battle I have ever seen and that includes Luke hammering Vader, she takes out Kylo. They escape.

So thats my movie.

A few more thoughts:

The movie seemed to be a bit strong on Episode 4 resonances. While the nostalgia is great for the old fans, I am sceptical how it will play for a newer crowd.

Kylo seems really strong in the force but weak in sabre combat. Even after he disarmed Fin he couldn't kill him. Given the multiple remarsk about his unfinished training I think this is most definitely by design.

I love Fin. He is a refreshing idea. He puts a human face on the stormtroopers. He just wanted a peaceful life, but stepped up when needed. Its a pity he isn't a force user.

Rey really made this story for me. She is the heroine the franchise and perhaps modern movies in general needed.

Leia was.. ok. She seemed too mellowed, too old. I missed the fiery princess who berated her rescuers in New Hope, who went back for Luke in Empire Strikes Back, who choked Jabba in Return of the Jedi.

Han... what can I say. For me, every time he was onscreen he owned it.

BB8 is cute and funny. I hope R2D2 comes back as a full character. I would love their banter via C3P0.

Lord Snoke intrigues me. He has a huge scar on his head. Old Lightsaber wound?

I hope Luke and Rey does not turn into Yoda and Luke

I was a bit confused with the republic and the resistance coexisting together, How big was the republic supposed to be?

Anyway, thats all I can think of for now.

Regarding Finn, I like him, though my favourite character is Rey. Why is everybody obsessing over the shiny stormtrooper captain? Is this an EU thing?
