Yeah, don't quite have enough willing suspension of disbelief for me to accept that one. I'd say that his close-combat alternatives are quite limited, but given the amount of time he spends beating up Dig/making the point that "I don't need the bow", that excuse kind of goes out the window... And even so that doesn't really do much to negate the "WTF are you doing with your BOW, dude?!?!" aspect of it.

Definitely needs better fight choreography and less bow-bashing. (And let's not forget using his bow to block people using knives every so often...yikes!)

Even though I, as mentioned, enjoy this show very much I have to agree. He's got billions of dollars, surely he can afford a proper CQC weapon instead of using his bow.

Continuing the bow as a melee weapon discussion, this latest ep Ollie swings the bow and accidentally takes the head off a statue, then Merlyn Sr chops it in half with his hand. So what the hell is this bow made of anyway?

That issue aside, I thought it was a great ep.

I saw the season finale today and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. It went down pretty much like I expected with a few nice twists. Though some of it was a bit forced I think,

But the ending was otherwise pretty good and I have to admit I didn't really see it coming. I really thought that

Yeah, the season finale was not bad at all. I was surprised at the ending too.

This is where I eat a little crow for judging too early and not attempting to give this a chance.

When it aired last Fall we watched 2 eps (and a bit of the 3rd) before giving up.

Then I kept hearing how it steadily improved over the season and delivered a solid finale. Certain friends told me I was missing out.

So, I bought the whole 1st season off iTunes and the Mrs and I began watching it and giving it our honest attention.

...

And 4 eps in and I have to eat massive amounts of crow.

It's not only GOOD (and wonderfully a far cry from SMALLVILLE), but we are finding ourselves truly enjoying it and wanting to watch the next ep right away.

So this is me. Accepting my mistake, and coming around to this very enjoyable show.

Yeah i got all caught up last week and nitpicks aside, overall i thought it was a solid first season and i'm on for S2.

The bow thing still bugs me but considering the fight scenes are usually pretty well done overall, i can overlook. Laurel also bugs me, but whatever, the CW needs its romantic angst quota.

The finale does set up some neat changes for S2, notably

Mommy Queen in prison, which lets Thea (and her "great aim... hee") run free with Roy and
leaves Ollie in charge of the corp.
The Glades is now a wasteland... expect to see this used as setting a lot a la Batman's No Man's Land.
Det Drake thinks the Vigilante is nifty. Tho i'm almost upset by this because he was more fun as an antagonist.
Drake knows about Felicity's connection to the Hood.
With Merlyn out we get a new Big Bad, tho Merlyn's return is inevitable, hopefully they wait a season.



Am also curious where the Island flashback storyline goes, now that the evil plot was foiled and Yang is dead. Slade and Shaido are still on the scene but in theory have to be gone by the time Ollie is rescued. And we don't know where the Russian Mafia tattoos came from yet.

Yep, echo all of this - I ended up really enjoying it, especially the last half a dozen episodes, so I was glad I stuck with it in the end.

I started watching this on and off halfway through the season and finished it up a little while ago, too. Overall I like it, it's sort of categorized for me as a fun popcorn show that doesn't necessarily have a lot of depth, but is good enough I can't just watch it while distractedly doing something else at the same time.

1+2 - I really thought he was going to die at the end... him making his tearful goodbye speech because there was no more time left and then oh wait I guess there is time to flee after all I'm totally fine was kinda weird to me. Hopefully this part of it can lead to more interesting cops vs Hood dynamics, though, because the police chasing Ollie in season 1 never really seemed like much of a threat other than when he was arrested. Maybe season 2 will see some FBI hard-ass super detective show up to hunt down the vigilante via ruthless means, but Drake will give Ollie an in on the police activities.

3 - I do like that they killed off Tommy, as I was afraid they were going to either do the spiderman green goblin thing (ick) or agonizingly keep drawing out the love triangle dramas through season 2 as well (double ick). But having Tommy dead and Elder Merlyn put away leaves a vaccuum at the top of Merlyn Corp, doesn't it? Could see something happen with that.

4 - There was a short scene in one of the last few episodes of the mercenary leader reporting to a mystery woman, but not really any details. It's probably not Ollie's mom, though, I don't think there's any way that could make sense with what was revealed of her involvement in DER UNDERTAKING in the final episodes' flashbacks.

I really hope whoever the next big bad is has better naming conventions for his sinister plots

Anyway, it wasn't all you. SF/action shows need to come out of the gate strong, and they rarely do.

Now, you should also go watch Continuum, all of you! It started out pretty damn decent and had just gotten better and better (Though it has a truly horrible theme song)

I have to say, it's among my top three best scifi shows I've seen. I can't decide if it's 2 or 3 fighting with SG:U with Farscape on a solid 1st place.

I tried CONTINUUM but the bad acting and not an original idea to be seen drove me away. I just can't do predictable television any more. Had the same problem with DEFIANCE.

Continuum, the first half of season 1 was pretty meh but stuck with it and it is now one of my favourite shows, season 2 is great!

...I dunno, maybe i'm going through a cynical period with television lately... so little impresses me that isn't presented in a short run season on a cable channel.
