This is the Signup Thread for all those that would like to participate in the next Diplomacy game. We would also like 3 people to volunteer as alternates that WILL step in in case one of the other players in the game has to quit for whatever reason. All are welcome.

1 ) Twelve (Not E)
2 ) Vengeance (if after 16th else alt)
3 ) Tapper (if after 16th else alt) (FGETIAR)
4 ) Morgoth (Not AT)
5 ) Sir Thursday
6 ) T'renn (Not T)
7 ) EmperorMagus

Alternates

1 ) Gnaw
2 )
3 )

Trainees

1 ) Tattersail
2 ) Azathmaster

I've added a new category for those interested in the game but aren't willing to do a trial by fire. If you are interested in learing the game without the full resposibilty of running your own empire then, for those in the game willing to mentor, you will be assigned as their partner. That means that you will be included in all pms of your partner and if the mentor has to leave the game then you will be responsible for continuing in their stead. If there are no more mentors available then you will be added as an alternate.

Players willing to mentor (please correct me if I'm wrong)
Morgoth
Tapper

I'm okay waiting 2 weeks to start. Like I said a bit of a break between games is welcome unless there are enough people that want to get this ball rolling as of yesterday then I'll plop you down as an alternate.
I don't know what I'm doing but it sounds good.

This is a 5 or 6 month commitment? Judging by past game threads.

I haven't played Diplomacy in 20 years and those were in-person weekend games. Had lots of fun, not counting the Saturday night that we all decided to hit the Class VI store instead of getting beer delivered from the Gasthaus right outside the gates. Tequila and the high art of the three way backstab do not a pleasant scene make. :p. Especially when two of the players are brothers, one of whom ended up in control of Warsaw, Romania, and Constantinople. I was already out of that game so could appreciate the sheer beauty of the betrayals.

I don't have a good enough read on people yet to commit to a full game, but I will be an alt. An alt stepping in is already behind the "flavor" of the current game anyways.

Go on then, I enjoyed the last one (somehow playing from behind is more fun).

Don't look now, but I think there's something weird attached to the bottom of my posts.

Why do I suddenly have an intense itch right below my shoulder blades? And does anyone else hear that whishy, soft grinding noise? Like steel on a whetstone?

So Morgoth you going to be able to play to the end or are you thinking of playing as partners with Gnaw? You had to drop out because of work conflicts last time right?

Well if Macros signs up again I will be looking for someone to help me fight him off and from what Vengy has told me I will be short on willing allies right out of the gate so you might not have to play from behind at all.

So do people want to submit a preference list of which powers they want from most to least favorable or should we just randomize again like what Macros did for the last game?

I have no preference. Now that I've been trying to remember, I believe that I'm equally adept at losin.....er. I mean playing all powers.

Have any of you played Machiavelli? Diplomacy on steroids. You not only have armies, you have to feed and pay them. Famines, droughts, floods can be added.

I haven't. As this last game that I played was the first ever of the regular diplomacy I'm not sure I'm ready for Dip on steroids. But I know JDip has a Machiavelli map options so I could mod one if their were enough people willing to try it.

Eh. Wasn't suggesting it. Just curious if others have played it. The back stab is so much more poignant when it comes in the "I bribed your mercenaries to attack your partner instead of supporting your attack on Genoa."

I'm not seeing any massive workloads on the horizon, but it's impossible to say anything for sure. Which is why I figured it was safer to go in with a partner.

And no, I've never played Machiavelli, but it sounds like fun.

It looks to complicated for me to be honest. Who won the last game?

I had no clue how to play the game until I jumped in the last one. I was going to be Tapper's partner to learn the game but for whatever reason I ended up having to play by myself. It's not that hard actually. Especially if you use a software program to play with how the moves work. It's even easier if you team up with someone that is good with strategy then you just do what they say and you will go far in the game. If you want you can ask to be someone's partner and be included in all of the communications with other players and learn the strategy if you aren't willing to jump into the fire and learn as you go.

I think of Diplomacy as a combination of Survivor and Risk. You have the scheming and backstabbing going on as a social aspect of the game and you have the strategy aspect of troop placement, where/how to attack and defend.

Though because it is such a long game when things are going poorly for a player they have a tendacy to quit. At least on other on-line forums that I've played this year. The Malazan group was actually good about not quitting when things were going bad with the exception of one player and I'm not truly convinced that was the reason he did quit. I just don't think he was a very active member to begin with.
I don't know what I'm doing but it sounds good.

I'll be a partner for someone. I then can grasp what is going on. It is essentially an online boardgame? I love boardgames.
