I think that the most common misconception about the books is that they follow a standard fantasy rules. For example - immense power in the Malazan series doe not, by any means, mean being indestructible. I think this is the best part of the books. All gods, daemons, creatures, races, spirits, and everything in between are vulnerable at certain points, and that makes them relatable and interesting.
I love it when Quick Ben enjoys the thought of outwitting the Crippled God.: "Fallen One, but that means you'll have to outwit me. Forget the gods and their clumsy games, I'll have you crawling in circles before long..."
The art of losing isn't hard to master. So many things are filled with the intend to be lost that their loss is no disaster.
