and drew my first picture with it.

its in the Inn, in apts pictionary thread. took all of two minutes but it was just so much easier than trying to draw with a slate tablet, I never could get the hang of translating hand movements to on screen with my bamboo.

those crtl paint videos are superb for getting to know how to work photoshop properly.

eta - have just spent a few hours dicking about, watching tutorials on photoshop and the like. drawing stuff and messing about. Forgot how much there is in photoshop to play about with, but picking up quite a lot. even things like short keys, something I never used, makes life so much easier and things so much quicker.

really don't want to go back to england on monday because i can't take this with me.

grah, roll on 2017 and my Australian visa!

this was like 20 mins.

its a work sheet from Ctrl paint, those videos are ace at demonstrating the proper power and versatility of photoshop.

so this was me dicking about and learning how to properly use the eraser and paint dropper tool after watching the accompanying video.

eta - I know i left a few lines and messy bits in it but its my turn to cook and the family is hungry

These excercises and my lack of doing them is the key reason I take years to do anything.

I tend to take 30 years doing things the hard way then cave and use cliping layers and linework instead.

Matt Kohr has a video on the proper work flow. A lot about under sketch, over sketch, refined lines...etc

I tend to skip all that and start with iffy blobs that eventually look like people. can't seem to break the habit.

even just his constaqnt reminders of the short cut keys make it a pleasure to work with, I am starting to flick over to zoom and back to brush with barely looking at the keyboard now, rather than squinting at the toolbar to find the magnifying glass etc.

I probably should be spending more time going on blank canvases and building and practicing on the videos but I just want to keep watching the next one

I often watch tutorial videos while doing something else. Just watching them helps.
Sometimes I'll remember things they talk about, often I won't but the videos are always there to go back to.
Just time-lapses of someone else painting without commentary can be helpful as well. There are hundreds on youtube

just clowning around looking at a few example of simple ways to cartoonify things, ended up drawing along with a simple tutorial.

Again its nothing wonderful and there's a lot I would do better if I could be bothered to draw it again. I'd say the biggest thing I picked up from this is I don't use the rotate canvas function, and I should, as there are definitely certain angles I can draw much smoother curves along, and it shows clearly in my lines here.

still another learning experience. probably need to start trying out more brushes

This was drawn based on Dolmen's rather thorough redline(not even sure if that still classifies as a redline? it even included a whole new sketch!) of kinda different drawing and a lot of tips and helpful bits and all kinds of stuff

There're still smaller things that feel off but I think I got all the major things I wanted right and overally I'm actually very happy with it

No particular character, just a random jhag (I think it was formerly supposed to be a jaghut but I didn't actually think about that much when drawing so now it's a jhag)

I looked at the picture the first time on my phone and burst out laughing.
on a small screen in bed with half awake eyes it looked like he had explosive diarrhea, and I'm horrendously childish like that :D

just watching a few more videos on ctrl paint and realised how much time I've wasted when colouring.
My approach is to make my line the top layer, then fire in a new layer below, hard brush and paint away, then get out the eraser, zoom in and delete back to the lines.

my god but I never used the pen tool or realised how versatile it was to use as a selection tool for creating masks.

Rubber outer begone!

well don't leave, but get into the back seat.

just need to spent more time now actually working on my drawing and stop painting pixar fish

have spent a while this evening starting something.

originally I had an idea in my head for Sinn, but well its just not heading that way now,

anyway, I'm not really sure where to go with this, I mean I know I'm going to give her a robe and what not and finish the hands obviously.
but, does this type of image work on a white canvas, should I shade in behind the whole thing. the eyes are really bugging me.
Again I'm still only working with like 3 brushes (I don't think I have the skills to need any more at the minute, or possibly ever) but I know there's fundamentals I'm doing wrong and other things I can do better.

is my approach silly?

I generally will do a basic line drawing.

then one of two things, if its going to be cartoonish I start a new layer and refine the lines a bit, possibly go through that several times, before colouring.

this time I fired out a basic line art then left it as the top layer and started to add blocks of colour and various details, flicking the line layers visibility on and off to see how its looking.

here its current state, with and without the "guidelines"

spent most my computer time today doing a few posters and tickets for my mum.
decided to spend a half hour again on the fire lady.

basically I know it's never going to go where I want it to go so I gave her a shirt and am calling it quits.

chalking it up as another learning experience. I rely too much on the transfer brush instead of shading and colour dropping properly. still struggle massively using shadows and tone change to delineate, but still learned a few more things.

ETA - the fire looks far too much like an explosion fire, it should probably be more of smolder flame given its location and context

There's a lot to like about it though, and I think that's some of the best hair I've seen here.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

A few design type questions for the more informed than I.

making up a ticket for my mum for an afternoon tea thing she is running.
the dog is the charity logo and can not be changed. the colour scheme is of mums choosing also. the inner ellipse on the frame she wants navy as that is the colour of their blazers or some such and that's where the picture will be.

anyway, my query, should the frame be bigger? I was thinking of having leaves/ flowers sprouting from the tea pot and growing up into the frame, too much or would that help with the fractured nature of the layout at the minute or leave it even more cluttered?

eta should I get rid of the twigs and buds?

eta eta possibly more blooms and leaves to leave a solid fill around the ellipse?
