If you don't know what a bug-out bag is, my impression (and I'm by no means an expert) is that it's meant to be basic survival gear to be employed if/when 'the big one' hits, whether it be nuclear holocaust, zombie apocalypse, tidal wave, asteroid impact, civil war, etc. Basically when the lights go out and stay out.

Some people have 2 or more - 1 in the car, 1 at home, etc.

While I don't currently feel the need to have one, I like it as an idea and am thinking of putting one together. Bought a Datsusara Battlepack: link
and I was planning on using it for international travel ( use the light version for my cycle commute and love it, btw) but I'm thinking this would be an awesome vehicle for an epic bug-out bag. Maybe get another one for travel, I dunno.

What would you put in your bug-out bag(s)? where would you keep it/them? how do you imagine it playing out if you had to use it? etc.

I will be back with things I've picked up on other forums about this phenomenon.

Discuss :wallbash:

I've only heard about these things being used in Eqrthquake/Hurricane areas. Denmark is sitting in a sweet spot where the worst thing that can happen is a bit of rain that might flood your basement, but if I had to make a survival pack for like a week of "roughing it".

What's the maximum weight limit? Are we talking a small back pack or the kind of thing you'd transport your NHL gear in?

Am I allowed to have a 10 liter jug of water next to the bag? Because I'd really like that.
No? Well, a 2 litre bottle of water goes into the bag then.
A pack of some kind of tablet that allows me to decontaminate water I find around. Maybe one of those magical straws they hand out in Africa.
Meal replacement bar type of stuff. Maybe a jar of peanut butter.
A flash light. TWO flash-lights.
Plenty of batteries.
A lighter.
Matches.
Bandages.
Needle and thread.
Can anti-biotics keep themselves "fresh" for longer periods?
A big ol' jar of painkillers
A letherman tool.
A hammer with a pick built in.
An Amazon kindle.
Toilet roll.
A pair of glasses and a pack of contacts. (I am near sighted)
If I was living in America I'd add a light handgun with a couple of clips, for when the hungry people come for my delicious peanut butter. EDIT2: Or I could blow my brains out when I realise nobody is coming and my foot is still caught under this concrete pillar and I don't want to chew my foot off.

EDIT: And like a 1000 kroners worth of cash in small bills and coins.
Oh and if I was rich a god damn satellite phone and a gps.

EDIT3: How could I forget Gaffa tape? And maybe some plastic sheeting if there's room for something like that in the bag.

I dunno if a geologist's hammer (what you describe as a hammer with a pick built-in) makes the grade but I love them so I would consider it.

no to the Kindle and toilet roll, for me. Moss is God's own asswipe (try it, you'll see what I mean)

wet-wipes are a must - I spent a month camping in the desert and they kept me sane. Individually packaged, not those tissue-box delivery systems, they dry out fast.

Bushknife, my favourite in the past was a diving knife I wore around my neck, quick-release, can cut down saplings easy to make a shelter - acommpanying whetstone, obviously.

Hatchet, small file to sharpen it. Immeasurably useful.

back later, trying to track down a thread I saw on the underground with proper bug-out bag inventories...

here's a good example:

I just re packed mine today. It's a military Alice pack (large) with frames. This is meant not as a 72 hour bag, but as a bag to use if I wasn't coming home EVER (so it is larger and heavier than a 72 hour bag) There is a ton of shit in there...here is a good chunk of it: (FRAT warning)

Shelter
-2 person tent (folded up doesn't take much space)
Clothes:
-2 hoodies
-2 t shirts
-2 wool socks
-1 pants
-Poncho
Food:
-1 zip lock bag rice and oats
-beef jerky/honey/bouillion cubes (sp?)
-1 MRE

Supplies:

-1 roll T.P. with core removed
-magnesium flint/lighters/zippo
-mess kit/camelback (2 liter)/water purification tablets/water filter
-Paracord
-Mini Fishing kit (look up yo yo fishing kit)
-Sun glasses
-basic first aid kit
-Compass/whistle/flash light
-Hand Crank Radio/flashlight combo

-Knives (about 4) ranging from pocket knife to full machete
-Camp Axe
-Mini Pry Bar
-1 Telescoping baton

This probably isn't even half of everything but its the things off the top of my head. It's a big ass pack but when shit hits the fan I'm hopefully better off than the rest of everyone else who doesn't know what the fuck to grab in a short amount of time.

A shit-load of books, if the world is ending and I'm the only one left I reckon I'll be pretty damn bored. Oh and maybe a tin of baked beans.

I have a bug out bag, in car out of car. I have one hidden out of city.

I have a bug in kit at the house that compromises of enough of anything I need for a long time.

Remember over 30% of all people are prepers, you are not alone.

Knowing what to do is key from a small situation to say a zombie invasion /grin.

Nico, nowhere near 30% of people are preppers.
If mal gets a bug out bag, that will make two people I know of with one.

The idea is sound, your just have to make sure everything in them is totally non perisable or update it periodically (even batteries have a shelf life)

I think those things nest in Bug-out bags.

I have an emergency bag, but that's somewhat different. It's not based on a breakdown of society, but major earthquake and/or tsunami. I use a big pack designed for extended mountain hiking.

I'm just thinking off the top of my head, but here's what I've got in it.

Food of various types, that don't expire readily. (I keep a list on the outside of the bag of expiry dates, and replace as needed)
Water
2 Flashlights (one of them is the crank type)
2 headlamps.
Radio
Batteries
Toilet paper.
Towels.
Pain killers.
First aid kit.
A hunting knife (pommel designed to double as a hammer)
A swiss army knife.
Matches/ligher.
A blanket.

Everything that isn't the food or water (in their own wrapping) is sealed in ziploc bags.
Someone mentioned tape, that sounds like a solid addition.

Again, this pack is based on short term survival in the wake of a disaster like 3/11 in Tohoku.

You’ve never heard of the Silanda? … It’s the ship that made the Warren of Telas run in less than 12 parsecs.

I actually know a guy. He carries his backpack with him every where he goes. He also carries a 9mm pistol in his holster at his lower back, covered by his shirt. His name is Daniel. We go to church together and he is part of our security team. If you have a headache, ask Daniel, he'll get in his bag and get some aspirin. Need a tool to fix that squeaky hinge on the door. Ask Daniel, he'll pull out a multi-tool. Hungry? Hes always got a thermos of soup...Thirsty? Have a water....need to cut down a small limb thats in the way...Yes - he has a small fold-able hand-saw....everything you might need for a few days in the woods he has in his backpack...and it never leaves his side. He may set it down in a corner of church, he doesn't carry it everywhere, but its always close...

Believe it or not - in the bible belt, where I live, this isn't that odd. Most of us want bomb shelters and hydro-electric power plants that you can get online (thanks for the tip Bubba!) and some of us (like myself) have 5 acres of land in which they actually plan on building a fallout shelter. Not for the end of the world stuff- but because of the movie with Brendan Fraser where he lived in a bomb shelter for his whole life, then comes out to explore....AWESOME!!!

That sounds really interesting. Gotta linky I can check out? My father-in-law bought us an emergency generator that runs on standard gas cannisters that most people buy for the stoves that everyone uses for sukiyaki/hotpot cooking over here.

Obviously in Japan (especially post 3/11), emergency bags are pretty much a standard household item.

Nico, nowhere near 30% of people are preppers.

A whole religion is basically dedicated to prepping <Mormons> and having a network in case the shit hits the fan. Funny that I live in a neighborhood surrounded by people who all have one year of food on hand <per person> and garden. Though Phoenix is Mormon heavy. #3 least likely to have natural disasters. The heat may be rough...but Phoenix has something about it. /wink

To those that don't prep...they will die. I hope you come to terms with this and put together a 3 day kit, then a month kit at least.. learn to garden too its sooo much fun. Learn a hard skill.
Sleep well.

You're forgetting the fact that it's all nonsense quasi-role-playing and nobody's actually gonna die.
