Just finished the crippled god. Amazing set of books/ I only read the books by Steven Erickson and I dont mind spoilers from Ian Esselemonts Books. Here are my questions that I feel where an unanswered and I will dig through the many forum posts later, in no particular order.

Tavore - how did she know what to do all along and most importantly at the end when she screams and says "i lost her" who does she refer to? is it the Eresal and if so

Can someone explain the Eresal?

Kallor - what happens to him? he just continues to wander the world or what? is he a god? maybe a god of lust for power or something like that?

Laseen / Korbolo Dom - its implied there is an emperor, does laseem die? does korbolo take over - really wanted korbolo to get his

Who is Sands father that she has mixed blood? draconus was my best guess

Leoman / Queen of dreams what happened?

Ghost Hands - is he now in the barrow forever with the Oratal dragon?

Karsa - all he does is kill fener? i thought the fate of teh world was supposed to rest on his shoulders?

Worm of Autumn - what exactly is she doing at the end that is so helpful besides digging a barrow for the dragon?

Why did the E'rakal heal kalaman?

Felism the younger - no resolution?

Grub - what is he, a god of the soldier of some sort?

The Snake with the kids badalle etc.. manifestation of the worm of autumn, did i misread that?

I got tons more questions, if i want to keep reading about this world and only read the Erickson books, where should i start / continue reading?

Where can i find more info on what erickson has to say if anything about the way he wrapped things up

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to answer any of my questions.

Tavore - how did she know what to do all along and most importantly at the end when she screams and says "i lost her" who does she refer to? Since she's talking to Ganoes, it's a pretty safe bet she's referring to her sister Felisin, whom she doesn't know she killed. the Eres'al had possessed T'amber, and i think this is where Tavore got a lot of her knowledge. a lot of the 'how' with regards to tavore is totally off-screen, and has to be inferred. is it the Eresal and if so

Can someone explain the Eresal? A time-travelling monkey-goddess who goes around messing with people? What's to explain

Kallor - what happens to him? he just continues to wander the world or what? is he a god? maybe a god of lust for power or something like that? he appears in several ICE books, and he's not finished yet.

Laseen / Korbolo Dom - its implied there is an emperor, does laseem die? does korbolo take over - really wanted korbolo to get his one word: RotCG (return of the crimson guard)

Who is Sands father that she has mixed blood? draconus was my best guess that's most people's best guess.

Leoman / Queen of dreams what happened? ICE

Ghost Hands - is he now in the barrow forever with the Oratal dragon? i think so. and i think it will be good for both of them.

Karsa - all he does is kill fener? i thought the fate of teh world was supposed to rest on his shoulders? without karsa killing fener, the heart wouldn't have been alive enough to ressurrect the Crippled God in a mortal body. recall that when it got doused with blood, it turned from a dried-up rock to a throbbing, pumping muscle.

Worm of Autumn - what exactly is she doing at the end that is so helpful besides digging a barrow for the dragon? by encircling the mound, and the malazans on it, she shielded them from the voice of the FA, which would have ended the battle in about five seconds.

Why did the E'rakal heal kalaman? this one is confusing. way back in HoC, kalam freed something - a demon. it possessed an enkaral and came to attack him. the enkaral got put into the body the demon had been possessing, got claimed by the wolves of winter and found his life to be vastly improved. healing kalam was a thank you.

Felism the younger - no resolution? there really wasn't any roll for her to play in the finale, and besides, she's busy founding a religion. plus, she's smack dab in the middle of a wasteland on a continent emptied by plague and war. seven cities is gonna be a quiet place for a while.

Grub - what is he, a god of the soldier of some sort? some sort. i imagine his choices as he grows up will shape what he becomes.

The Snake with the kids badalle etc.. manifestation of the worm of autumn, did i misread that? nope

I got tons more questions, if i want to keep reading about this world and only read the Erickson books, where should i start / continue reading? Erikson has also written a series of novellas about Bauchelain and Korbal Broach, called Tales of Bauchelain and Korbal Broach.

However, I seriously recommend that you read the ICE books. they are essential to understanding the fullness of the world. you can read SE's stories and get through them without need of reading any ICE books (for the most part), but it's only half the story of the world. ICE created the world of malaz just as much as SE.

Where can i find more info on what erickson has to say if anything about the way he wrapped things up

replies in red, and seriously, read the ICE books.

The Crippled God pretty much wraps up everything from Erikson's 10-book series (The Malazan Book of the Fallen), but there are some things that have minor inclusions that are more properly dealt with in the ICE books. For example, the Darujhistan Tyrant referenced somewhat in GotM and which became a bit of a minor side-plot in TtH is the main plot of Orb, Sceptre, Throne.

ICE still has 2 more books to go - Blood & Bone is supposed to come out Fall 2012 and after that there will be Assail.

SE still has a Tiste Trilogy, a Toblakai Trilogy and a few more Bauchelain & Korbal Broach novellas in the works, too.

I just ordered that compilation book with Goats of Glory in it too...hasn't come yet but it's supposed to be a Malazan tale set near Shal-Morzinn, at least by inference, so if you feel like something on the far fringe there's that.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

so do you recomend i go and read all the ICE books now starting with night of knives and just going in order or is too much stuff spoiled for me now that i have read all the way to the end? i heard RCG is real good but should i just read it as a stand alone or do i need the night of knives first? are ICE books as good? i am little torn here, i am a long time fantasy reader and these books are as good as anything i have ever read, this world is so epic and so real to me. I would hate to start reading the ICE books and have them not be as good, i want to always think of these books as some of the best things i have ever read.. i am taking a small break from fantasy books for a month or two but when i come back to them i want an amazing series to read and hoping back into the malazan world seems reasonable, so what are all your thoughts? btw, i love that this forum exists, it really enhanced my reading experience!

RotCG is the only ICE book I've read, and will probably be the last. I really didn't enjoy it much at all. The battle scenes towards the end are decent, and it's a far more straightforward read than the main series, but I simply found it badly written and uncompelling. The others might be better, and there are certainly those who disagree with my assessment, but that's my two cents

one more question that is bugging me.. The Liosan. Why were they trying to take over? was there some prophecy or some historic fact i missed? did they feel they were superior like the FA did? How and why did they get locked in lightfall in the 1st place?

They hate the Andii. When Father Light and Mother Dark got together both felt betrayed by the act. Also, they weren't "locked" in Lightfall. It was a barrier, not a trap.

Also, I'd recommend the Esselmont books. I think they are good.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

ICE's books are good reads, and have a lot of good things about them, but don't expect the same calibre of writing that SE gives you. don't get me wrong, ICE is a good writer, and he and SE have a similar style, SE is simply more talented. they're like Gretzky and Messier. Messier was damn good, he won awards and championships, but Gretzky, hell, he was The Great One.

I just posted about this in another thread, but in short, my take on it is that the Liosan were isolationists for millenia ever since the sealing of Kurald Thyrllan and a major part of their society was worshipping, or at least revering, Osserc. When L'oric's familiar, who was masquerading as Osserc on Osserc's behalf, was killed in HoC, it sparked a major social and religious upheaval lead by Kadagar Fant, Kadagar killed his father (the previous ruler, who had continued the Liosan isolationism) and took over, naming himself the Lord of Light and disavowing worship of Osserc and FL, and then began trying to break out into the world and assert Liosan dominance, first using the Hounds of Light to try and take Dragnipur, then killing Kessobahn to become Soletaken eleint, and lastly using the eleint power to break Lightfall so they can conquer Kharkanas and beyond.

Sinisder Toste has it about covered. Seriously, go read the ICE books. I finished TCG, and then I read Esslemont's stuff and went "Ohhhhhhh, now I see how that happened."

Click Dreks link for a recent timeline of events.

All ill add is there is a section where Anomander chides Osserc not to destroy the Shadow House to which Osserc replies 'you would break the peace between our two houses?' suggesting there was an accord between them. The problem with this is we have no context, if it was many of the alliances made between Osserc and Rake, whether it stood for the Liosan and the Andii or simply their individual houses etc. However despite the limitations it does give the impression of an accord between these two houses who, if they were dominant as they seem to have been, esp among the Liosan with Osserc being in the ascendency until recently (Dreks timeline), may be representative of a long standing neutrality to one another.
