I remember the first time I heard an American bitch about having to pay $30 for a hardcover. I laughed. It's even worse when they whine about having to shell out a whole $60 for a new game.

Winds of Winter pt. 1 - The Supernatural Cripple

But doesn't 1 USD not equal 1 AUD ??? So how does it really compare?

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

Winds of Winter Part 1: Remembering Alaska
It is perfectly monstrous the way people go about nowadays saying things against one, behind one's back, that are absolutely and entirely true.

It's pretty close, actually. Right now $1 AUD = $0.96 USD. And Canadian dollars and Australian dollars are pretty much 1-to-1.

Borders' Australian website has Malazan hardcovers listed from $35-40 AUD, which is roughly $33-$38 USD. so they are a bit more expensive, by about 30% or so (assuming US prices of ~$25-30.) Canada gets it far worse, though, if the $40-$50 prices at Amazon.ca are any indication.

"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

Yeah, that's about right, though it can get more expensive for popular books. I saw a Dance of Dragons hardcover selling for $55 on release day, and I remember paying about $40 at Borders for a TPB of Toll The Hounds when it came out.

Games is where it really hits us though. Even back when the Aussie dollar was about $0.70 USD it was still cheaper for my brother and I to import new games from the US rather than buy them here, as you'll typically find new console games selling for $100+. Gotta love internet shopping and a high Aussie dollar.

Your American friend does not know how to bargain hunt. You shouldn't ever have to pay more than ~ $21 for a hardcover in the U.S. unless you're buying a textbook or something obscure. I bought ~ 5 hardcovers in the past month and didn't pay more than $7 or $8 for any of them. http://www.hamiltonbook.com

He doesn't usually pay more than what you said, hence the bitching...

Sounds like I need to start a company to export books, games, and other goods to AUS. Who's with me?
HiddenOne. You son of a bitch. You slimy, skulking, low-posting scumbag. You knew it would come to this. Roundabout, maybe. Tortuous, certainly. But here we are, you and me again. I started the train on you so many many hours ago, and now I'm going to finish it. Die HO. Die. This is for last time, and this is for this game too. This is for all the people who died to your backstabbing, treacherous, "I sure don't know what's going on around here" filthy lying, deceitful ways. You son of a bitch. Whatever happens, this is justice. For me, this is justice. Vote HiddenOne Finally, I am at peace.

its still a ripoff, but generally, historically, you can't do a 1 to 1 between the USD and the Aussie dollar. last couple years maybe, but the pricing was established long before the recent relative parity.

I don't see any connection at all. The Malazan Book of the Fallen may have a following but it is not even remotely as big as Song of Ice and Fire. The Dust of Dreams title was coined like 5 or 6 years ago. It is not some kind of golden catch phrase that has reverberated through the halls of Fantasy litterature. It is just a title. I think Martin is more than capable of coming up with his own flowery titles.

Bah, SOIAF is welcome to its following, you'll all be grandparents by the time its finished. Splitting a book in two that's not meant to be is a money scam. Pathetic.

Rant: Popular as ASOIAF might be it's still a long winded political story set in a simplistic standard fantasy genre world. It lacks the complexity and awe inspiring diversity of Erikson/ICE's realms of surreal wonder and horror. Is GRRM as epic as SE/ICE? Probably. Is GRRM as original and wonderous as SE/ICE? No fucking way! I pity the readers who prize GRRM over Erikson. They wouldn't know greatness if it bit them on the arse. They just follow the popular crowd. GRRM is accessable fantasy for the masses. Erikson is much, much more. TMBotF is intelligent fantasy at it's finest, a genre expanding explosion of imagination. I really hope that some GRRM fans end up with DoD instead, it might just inspire them to look at Erikson's work from the beginning. Then they will know true greatness!
