Hey Y'all --

Did we ever find out who/what Studious Lock was? I had originally thought that he was a Segulah based on his being with Madrun and Lazan Door, but Vorcan's comment about not knowing where to stab him and his general behavior in OST have me reconsidering. Any help out there?

Nope - he remains a mystery.
I also thought when he was intro'd back in TtH that he was Seguleh but it became clear he was something else.

I thoroughly enjoy how he perpetualy does clever things like faking out the Seguleh and then appears to have not intended to.

Really a character both SE and ICE clearly have fun writing.

Yeah i wasn't sure about him either, which as Abyss says is clearly intended... Also he clearly has the best name in the series :)

Torvald Nom mentions in either TTH or OST that Studlock was a Fist in One Eye Cat that was sealed inside a mountain somehow last anyone had heard.

It wasn't OST since I just finished, and I thought that the Nomiest of Nom's said Madrun and Door trapped in a mountain, not Studious?

I dont know about being a Fist but Nom calls him Studious Lock the Landless. Madrun and Door are the ones who run into the mountains with I think Brood in pursuit.

A scene in OST really made me wonder. Inner monologue of Studlock shows how he analyzes his surroundings....."Logic and biology."
Really gave me pause thinking that sounds almost like a (excuse the term) watered down way of a FA thought process.
Could he in some way be of FA origins?
Why should I infect them with my rage?

Nothing is off the table but i suspect Vorcan would have known an FA.

FA thought process really nothing to do with logic, and more with power (or as they like to called it 'justice'). Indeed it seems if he was a FA or something of FA origin he would be a very strange one, because he thinks nothing of dominating people via 'justice'. So perhaps a weirdo that was chased away from them?

He's from One Eye Cat, right? Everything I've read about it makes me think it's a pretty crazy place. Studious Lock is probably normal for One Eye Cat. If he's from there originally... he does share the naming tendencies (Humble Measure, Sweetest Sufferance), but he may have adopted that name to 'fit in' when he first turned up there.

Would Vorcan knowing that he was of Assail blood have precluded him from being her Castellan? She's perhaps an equal opportunities employer.

I never thought about an Assail connection 'til reading this. I'm not really convinced, but as Abyss says, nothing is off the table. I just thought he was some kind of "spook", or creature that hasn't been revealed, not human, but not one of the other major races. Maybe some sort of summoned and later abandoned 'demon', just trying to make his way in this strange land of Wu.

Or he might be Grizzin Farl.

We've seen a couple of instances of 'demons' (beings from other dimensions) taking up residence in malazanland and more or less blending in - Coop on Malaz Island and the Kenaryllah princes in Leth come to mind. He's clearly not human and nothing seems to link him to any other known race, so i go with that as the most likely option.

I always thought he was an exiled moranth, without his armour - hence the bandages and sense of humour

I thought they called him Landless because his feet never touch the ground.

I never considered him as FA. He's much too accepting for an FA or Watered or even a Shriven. He seems human to me, or at least a half-blood. His medical-biological concerns make him rather particular.

Crusader -- I figured that "Landless" meant that he was dispossessed.
