Another threadsurrection...for those hardcore Tolkienites like me, and RTB and Salt-Man, ect.

So the new Hardcover Alan Lee Illustrated Complete Books/Set are out in the UK now, and in N.America in August.

They are tricksy too, those Harper Collins folks...they knew that if they just released the set (which is THE HOBBIT, and LOTR together in a slipcase) with the Alan Lee covers as they are on the existing trade paperbacks they might not snag me/us...but they are different art, the bastards! LOL

And yeah, it's gorgeous...so I'm contemplating just a hardback HOBBIT, since I have the 2014 single volume hardcover slipcase LOTR (60th Anniversary), so I really only NEED the HOBBIT in a nice edition to stand alongside that...but man these are NICE. Like nice enough to make me seriously consider the whole set. Because I apparently need THREE copies of all these books...LOL.

Anyways, just a heads up.

Oooof! Posted Image

This was 100% my reaction too. LOL!

My only saving grace is that it's not out here till August, so at the very least I have time to talk myself into it, or out of it...LOL

I WILL get the HOBBIT tho....I just may bite the bullet and grab the whole set...becuase...well becuase I'm me...

It's funny, Harper Collins has not released a lot of the peripheral older stuff like SIL in hardback since the edition that TRB mentioned...BUT I have a sneaky suspicion that since they've done new Alan Lee hardbacks of LOTR, and THE HOBBIT, and all of the more recent periphery stuff from Chris Tolkien (BEREN & LUTHIEN, THE CHILDREN OF HURIN, THE FALL OF GONDOLIN, ect.) has all gotten sweet, matching hardbacks...that THE SILMARILLION may also be coming. And I will of course, want that too!

If you're ever in Waterstones in the UK, they have (I think they may even be exclusive to them) some absolutely gorgeous hardback editions of The Hobbit, the three volumes of LotR, The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales; with lovely art on the dust jackets by Tolkien himself. A few years ago, The Folio Society did a, very nice indeed, illustrated three volume hardback edition too, if you fancy taking a real hit to the wallet.
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. Careful, Galadriel is Noldorin, and is eldest elf in Middle Earth barring Cirdan. ;)

I've not been in a Waterstones in about a decade (since my last UK trip), but I'll definitely pay attention the next time I'm through. I'm a sucker for fancy Tolkien editions. Thanks SM.
