Has anybody read the Riyria Revelations? I know the individual books are out of print, but Orbit is publishing them in 3 omnibus editions. My friend said she was gonna buy them and from what I can tell them seem good, but I'd like the opinion of another Malazan reader too.

They are a bit standard fantasy with the elves and the dwarfs. But it's still a enjoyable read that I would recommend if you are after a easy read.

He released a Riyria short story, called The Viscount and the Witch, which was at some point available for free online. Not sure if it still is, but if so you could read that and see if you like it.

I loved it. The fantasy story-within-the-story is only okay (I far prefer the movie version), but Goldman's frame story is the real genius bit. I recommend the 30th anniversary edition if you can get it, for the extra introduction. Whichever version you've got is worth reading, though.

Yep. William Goldman's a longtime, Oscar-winning screenplay writer and author, and he both wrote the novel and the screenplay for The Princess Bride. As such, the movie is very close to the book, but streamlined and improved (some of the most famous lines in the movie are taken word-for-word from the novel, but given to different characters), while the frame story was completely reworked to keep much of the same feel. It's a lot of fun to compare and contrast the two.

I just finished Legend by David Gemmell and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Are the other books in the series as good?

Say one thing for David Gemmell, say he was consistent. Some of his books were a tad predictable but I never read one I didn't enjoy.

Pretty much sums it up. I highly recommend his Waylander books, and the Rigante series (starting with Sword in the Storm), and the Troy trilogy.

Has anyone read 'Apocalypse Cow' by Michael Logan?

I just got it today and haven't read it yet but the blurb reads like it is a zombie apocalypse novel but instead of human zombies they're bovine zombies.

It won The Terry Pratchett Prize so I'm expecting it to be amusing.

Thirded. I'd suggest the entire Drenai series (which included Waylander and all the Druss books, among others).
His standalone DARK MOON is also fun... great characters.

I thought COWL was brilliant. It does things with time travel that make your brainz go all spirally. THE SKINNER is basically a good old fashioned sf actioner (with immortal super pirates vs aliens), but COWL is trippier.



Anyone read THE ANUBIS GATE by Tim Powers? Thoughts?

I hated _Cowl_, I'm afraid. Might have to try it again now I'm more familiar with Asher's style, but I have to say I'm not enjoying the thought of doing so.

I tried _The Anubis Gates_ a good few years ago. I wanted to like it, I really did. But I just couldn't get past the first chapters. Then I got distracted. Maybe time to try again. Kindle is my friend in these situations...
