I did not care for Monstrumologist. For a YA book, it had a build-up that was way too slow and boring, and none of the characters were likable. Having said that, I do have The 5th Wave wishlisted, because I find the premise so interesting.

May try to read the 1st book..

So I was browsing the net, when I found this:

Erin Hunter

Seems to be excusively about mythical cats. Anybody have any clue?

My younger brother once read a YA fantasy book which he really liked but has forgotten all about the author and title since. Now he would like to find it again and is bugging me no end.

The basic plot summary is: A red-haired girl (yes he remembers that) succeeds to the rule of a kingdom after her father dies. There is also a boy wizard. The kingdom is situated in a mountainous area. The cover showed a girl holding some type of weapon, with an animal in the background: lion/tiger/leopard/bear. The father died in a last stand allowing the daughter to escape. The words snow/ice/fire/daughter may be associated with the book and may have Viking overtones. Also first of a series and later books contain the adventures of the children of the original protagonists.

I know this is awfully thin, but I am at my wits end as to how to find it, so any hunches, memories, ideas would be really welcome for author/title/series name.

Not sure, is it possibly something from Jennifer Roberson or Louise Cooper (Indigo series?)

Showed both to my brother, but not the one he was looking for. Still thanks for replying to such a sketchy request.

It wouldn't be the Allana books. Though she is a redhead.

Another redhead-lead Fantasy series is James Rollins Clemens WITCH WAR series I don't know if it fits the description or not...as I only eve read the first book in the series. But the beginning of it was a girl who comes of age and gets magic.

THE HERO & THE CROWN by Robin McKinley also sounds close to that...though I'm unsure if Aerin is a redhead? Can't recall, but the rest of it fits. http://www.amazon.co...y/dp/0441328091

Sounds like The Cry of the Icemark by Stuart Hill.

There's a redheaded girl on the cover, and I have vague memories of the plot points you mentioned, so maybe...
I'm George. George McFly. I'm your density. I mean...your destiny.

My brother has identified it as Cry of the Icemark by Stuart Hill. So thanks a lot Kruppe's Snacky Cakes. And a great big thanks to everybody else for responding to such a hazy query in the first place. But one good thing that has transpired from this is that I gave my brother a very stern talking to about getting help from Malazanites without actually reading the Malazan books, and now he has said he will read the Malazan books!

Has anybody read the Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison. If so; was it any good? How YA is it? Is it worth a read/listen and if so which would you suggest?

Read the first one (lives) it's okay, but didn't interest me enough to pick up the sequel tbh.

Read Adamantine Palace - took too long to get going in my opinion - liked the idea, just a bit too slowly paced. May or may not return to the series, (might burn through the Thief-takers trilogy and base my decision on reading any more of his stuff on that)

Ha. This was the absolute opposite of my opinion. I found everything happens way too quickly and the book could have done with being at least a third longer.

Same here; I thought it could have been longer as well. I've read the whole bunch of dragon books (though not the Thieftaker series) and enjoyed them well enough as fast paced entertainment.

I'm going to guess it's worth a $1.99 ebook purchase then. Thanks CoCo, I'll try to remember to rep when I'm on the full site later today.

..Wingrove's Chung Kuo series? And if yes, is it good, and if yes, which release is preferable? The first, the second, or a mix of the two? If I am interpreting it correctly the rerelease only goes up to book 3 in the original series but takes 8 books to get there..

The sad sad tale - the old series was never finished. The rerelease never finished either.
My personal opinoin - the new/er ones still read like they were written in the 70s/80s/90s - can't put it into words, but there's certain stylistic methods used that makes the books read like they've been around for a while.

They're decent, but i wouldn't go out my way to read them. Or re-read them in my case.

The old series was finished, it's just that books 7 and 8 read like they were finished by some other author who had only skimmed the first six books, and was High As Fuck when he wrote 7 and 8, and not in a good way.

....unless Coco you mean never finished the way i say OTHERLAND was a trilogy, in which case yes, sadly the original series was never finished.

That said, I'd suggest reading the first six books of the original version.

They read nicely and completely, six ends the series in a complete and satisfying way, and overall it's a fascinating read. Great and extremely original setting based on China taking over the world back in colonial days, interesting characters (one of my favorite villains ever), genuinely ambiguous good/bad guys. Wild action scenes.

I wouldn't bother with the rerelease.... from what i skimmed and have heard from reviewers i trust, it isn't adding anything to the improvement of the original six.
