I've heard CRIME & PUNISHMENT is better...but yeah, WAR and PEACE is one of those books I feel like I should at some point read, so I say go for it!

I tried a few times years ago to read War and Peace. Always gave up around page 100-150. Just too boring. All those Russian nobles blathering on, frequently in untranslated French phrases (in my edition).
Get to the battles already! I couldn't give two shits about some Russian families and their social circle bickering. It's like a more painful version of Jane Austen - if it were possible.

Can't really recommend either they may be good literature but books to recommend not so much, like most "old masters" they're more of literature historic interest than because they are very good reads.

I've been watching these entertaining "basically Dungeons and Dragons" videos on YouTube and it's made me curious.

Besides Salvatore's Drizzt(?) books what other core series or works are there one could read to get into the DnD universe? Dragon Lance isn't DnD is it?

Started War and Peace. Sheesh it's just rich Russians gossiping about other rich Russians with the backdrop of the Napoleonic war.

It's not mind-blowing amazing, but there are far stuffier Russian classics.
I didn't find it to be particularly "deep", mind.
My reccos for Russian classics is always Bulgakov. "Heart of the Dog" and "White Guard" are just amazing books.

Black Leviathan is said to be Moby Dick with dragons. Sounds interesting. Has anyone actually read this and can comment on it?
On a slight tangent, there's a new anime on Netflix called "Drifting Dragons" which sounds like this.

Dragonlance is DnD, there are however several different worlds where Salvatore's books are Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance is Dragonlance. Having read the first of the Drizzt stories I also know to prefere Dragonlance which at least has somewhat competent authors. Pretty much exahausting my knowledge of DnD novels with those two sentences except for Dragonlance which I did read a long time ago.
Dragonlance is the novel version of a pretty typical RPG campaign. Remember it fondly with the same kind of nostalgia for simple stories that I have no intentio to re-read as that would likely ruin it utterly.

Those are pretty much the only novels in the setting worth reading. The YouTube videos you are watching lean heavily to the forgotten realms which is the salvatore books, from memory the homelands trilogy and the cleroc quintet were the best of those books.
If you were interested in exploring the dnd verse without playing the game, I'd suggest watching a dnd campaign on you tube... Critical role (for a traditional setting) or dimension 20 (for a funnier version) being the best examples.

I'm mostly just interested in reading fiction where these classic fantasy creatures appear. Something super generic.
I bounced off Dragonlance last time I tried, maybe I should just pick that back up.
Also bought the full package a few weeks ago when Humble Bundle was of doing a D&D bundle.

If you can track down the GORD THE ROGUE books, they were Gygax's first foray into LitRPG long before LitRPG was a thing and the writing is solid enough. It's very much DnD based with a wider menagerie to work with than Hickman n Weis used in DRAGONLANCE.
