Steph Swainston is ace. Her fourth book, the prequel Above the Snowline, I wasn't fond of, but the three books in the series proper are great fun. Especially if you fancy something easy-reading but away from the medieval-fantasy norm.

ps, Chance: the next Castle novel comes out next year; scheduled for December. And judging by her twitter she's writing far, far faster than she ever did as a full-time writer - she's already halfway through the one after that and says she's started work on the next two after that as well.

Yay though her writing career was over or at least seriously stalled. Very good news !

I've just started Janny Wurts's Curse of the Mist Wraith. I only know her through the trilogy she wrote with Feist (which I really liked). Is this one good? It's certainly a fat book!

I've read the first 3 "Wars of Light and Shadow" books so far. It's a good series, but wordy and VERY slow-burning. Enjoyable, but I wouldn't try reading them back-to-back.

Sorcerer to the Crown
The Flicker Men
Dark Orbit
Phoenix Rising: A Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences (and the series as a whole)

I'm trying to choose what to buy with my two audible credits.

Take the Dresden Files and remove all character flaws from the main character.

Nah. Butcher is a way more effective storyteller, the Dresden supporting cast is leaps and bounds more interesting, and Harry never hits the pubs with Jesus Christ (as far as we know).

I was unable to finish the first one, not due to wordiness or slow plot progress, but the lack of clear POVs. The narrator switched between POVs without any indication of doing so, and that put me off, though I'm thinking of going in again after finishing my re-read of WOT 6, as I really want to read and like the series. There are too few long epics to leave one unread because of problems with the narrator.

How about Mark Helprin's Winter's Tale?
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"
―Gene Wolfe, The Citadel of the Autarch

Finished it recently. Quite excellent. It was my first Kate Elliott.

Its the first book of a series, but if I understand correctly, it is set in the same universe as the Crossroads series.

The book itself is quite excellent. Long, multiple POV characters, lots of political intrigue - here is a link to my Goodreads Review if you are interested

Has anyone read the Magician's whatever trilogy by Trudi Caravan? I picked it up for free so I was just wondering if it's worth a read?

It's not. Might work as kindling, though even there I suspect it will fail.

Any comments regarding the Truly Epic Fantasy Bundle? The only name I recognize is Sanderson, whom I can't stand.

The only other names on that list I recognise are Hickman, who is the 'Hickman' of 'Weis and Hickman' dragonlance fame, and Michael Stackpole, who's okay.

I know you don't like Sanderson, but Shadows For Silence was an absolutely excellent read.

I have read a couple of Michael Stackpole books. Not bad, enjoyable. 6.5/10

I have read a Tracy Hickman collaboration work and that was very very good

And I did indeed go back to it and finished the first book (Wars of Light and Shadow: Curse of the Mistwraith). The story is fine, the world is decent, but I hate the narrator. Even so I've recently been thinking about trying the second book once I get my current to-read list read.

Am tempted by this, and that having just bought the Weird Western bundle.
Fuck.
