I see the list of Badass characters, but I am only reading Reapers Gale right now so I don't want to get spoiled. I guess my first question should be...Has there ever been or lately been something like this. A "Bracket Tourney" of malazan contestants. I know suvudu does one for random fantasy characters which is cool. But you can't really put Malazan characters in there cause almost any of them would just beat down anyone else. So here is my list so far.

So I plan on doing some sort of "Malazan Cage Match", when I'm done reading the books. I think I'll make a quick simple website and put links so people can vote on here and the malazan forum.

I am almost done with Reapers Gale. Here is my list of characters. With the caveat that I do not know if I will have 1 2 or 3 different brackets and how they will be split up. Will probably combine the mages and warrior types. But keep the gods separate? Add Icarium to the god section? Or put them all together and just remove K'rul? If any god could be considered the God of gods, it would be K'rul at this point.

So if I am missing anyone please let me know. But remember I am only through RG at this point. So please no spoilers as to why I'm missing someone, or some spoiler as to why someone should be listed or not listed...

Good idea, bad planned implementation, IMO.

1. Categories? Awful idea. Looking over your list, I can immediately narrow down the winner to one of about 5 possibilities, so the road getting to the final isn't going to be exciting. And you will face humongous complaints if you say the magic-users in the Warrior group can't use their magic, but also if you say that they *can*. Already you've got Raest listed as a Warrior which people will wholesomely disagree with. Considering gods falling from a mortal's actions is a recurring theme in the series, segregating the gods from mortals is silly.

2. Limited selection. You've got maybe 50 listed there? Keeping it limited only to those characters we know quite well removes the fun of speculating on what a lesser known character could bring to the table.

So, IMO, you should expand your list to something much longer. Start with this:
Spoiler

and then add any character anyone wants, no questions asked (but don't accept 500 submissions from one person!)

Seeding them will be far too much of a pain in the ass, so just randomize the list and line them up like that (with the justification that Oponn made the seeds to try and win...?)

Its true, we do tend to have the argument about "ho'd win" in almost every second post on this site.
But just to steal a march on Abyss and his inevitable Wolverine for the victor, I'm going with Batman for the catagory of superhero winner.

Good work on that list D'rek.

As I said categories or different brackets are up in the air right now. Mulling it over. Though I do think anything goes, everyone involved sort of scenario would be best.

Holy crap that's a lot of characters. But this is why I'm posting this stuff now, and not while it's being made. To get suggestions. And I am narrowing the list down to people who could conceivably beat a top contender. To have people like Blend or Cuttle(unless something changes later) would be pointless. Obviously you can look at this and say...you know what the top 4 will be pretty easily. But I have more plans than just a simple bracket vote for your favorite. I do see I forgot a few names now looking at your list. I will update it tomorrow. And after I do so you can look and see if I forgot some.

I would also be open to the idea of pairs. For example Fiddler probably wouldn't stand up to Rake. But throw in Hedge and some munitions and you got a good battle.

I do plan on seeding them. I have ran many tournaments in video games. Namely Q3, Q4, and QL(Quake series). And I enjoy seeding, so even though I know and expect complaints about how I seeded them wrong in your opinion...I'm ok with this.
(If anyone wants to jump in and help I'm willing. Mainly the website and everyone that comes with it...updating, managing, admin...etc)

The plan I'm chewing on is this.

Maybe a bracket of 64 strong Malazan characters(or more if we see fit). All viewers will vote them down to the ELITE EIGHT. And if I can get some traction, I plan to beg Steven Erickson and ICE to possibly write some battle sequences. So the obvious problem with them writing a battle is, it would be kind of lame to have it written w/out a winner. And they don't want to write 16 of them. So with 8left. There will only be 4 battles. And they can actually WRITE the winner. So the FINAL FOUR will hopefully be determined strictly by SE and/or ICE. Then users can once again vote for the winner of the last 4 and the final round. And who knows maybe after we chose the winner, SE will write how the battle would have went.

Having them write some battles is obviously a long shot. Suvudu was able to get some writers to do so, but they also held like video commentary and made it some huge long thing spanning months. I do not plan to make it last that long.

If we're determined to divide them into sections, I'm going to post how I would do it. I've included gods in each section, not in their own bracket. We're going to assume the gods are present in the mortal world, so they are as mortal as the rest. I've included all dragon soletaken in the mixed or mage category as appropriate, considering the magical aspect of dragons.

Physical fighters only, including anyone who does not use magic as a primary form of attack:

Andarist - He doesn't seem to use magic, does he?

Cotillion

Karsa

Kalor

Dassem Ultor

Seguleh?-Rell -#1,2

Aspalar

Kallam

Skinner

Surly - Does she use magic?

TrullSengar

IronBars

Itkovian - his magic doesn't have to do with combat

Tool

Redmask

The Hounds

Mappo

HeboricGhost hands - Is this the proper place to put him?

Gruntle

RhuladSengar

BrysBeddict

DejimNebrah

Gesler

Stormy

Greymane

UrkoCrust

CartheronCrust

Hedge

Fiddler

Temper

WhiskeyJack

Dessimbelackis - Does he do anything besides turn into deragoth?

Kilmandaros

Fener

Mixed users, who fight using both physical means and magical means:

Anomander Rake

Caladan Brood

Silchas Ruin

Scabandari Bloodeye

Topper

Kilava

Cowl

L'oric - He does use physical weapons as well, right?

Paran

Bellurdan - he is a mage, right?

Korlat

Menandore - is this correct placement?

Messremb - I don't even remember who this is

Raest - he's mixed, right?

Icarium

Hood

Osseric

Trake

Draconus

Edgewalker - We know nothing about him...

Mages, who use only or primarily magic without much physical capability:

Quickben

Tayscheren

Iskral Pust

Sinn

Bauchelain

Korbal Broach

Silverfox

Kruppe

A'Karonys

Bidithal

Bottle

Beak

LadyEnvy

Febryl

Nil

Nether

Mael

Nightchill

K'rul

Shadowthrone

Cripple God

Eres'al - don't really know where to put her

Errant

Gothos

Dryjhna - don't really know if this is right

Oponn

That's my estimation of groupings, but I think it would be more fun without separate brackets. For that reason I think groups for non-Godlike characters would be fun. (So solely physical people can have a magical partner)

Here are my groups: (In the next post)

1. Cotillion, Shadowthrone, and The Hounds
2. Karsa - doesn't need one because of his magical resistance
3. Kallor and The Crippled God
4. Dassem Ultor and Tayscheren
5. Kalam and Quickben
6. Anomander Rake - Does he really need a partner?
7. Caladan Brood - possible partner with Rake if you think they need it.
8. Mappo and Icarium
9. Fiddler, Hedge, and Bottle
10. Osseric and L'oric
11. Skinner and Cowl
12. Surly and Topper
13. Kilava
14. Stormy, Gesler, and Beak
15. WhiskeyJack and Korlat
16. IronBars and Oponn
17. Apsalar and Iskral Pust
18. Kruppe and Rallick Nom
19. Bauchelain and Korbal Broach
20. Redmask and his two dinosaur peoples.
21. Tool and Toc the Younger
22. Andarist and Silchas Ruin
23. Scabandari Bloodeye and Rhulad Sengar
24. Gruntle and Paran
25. K'rul and Seguleh - whichever
26. Brys Beddict and Mael
27. Nil, Nether, and Temper
28. Trake and Sinn
29. Nightchill and Bellurdan
30. Trull Sengar and Eres'al
31. Heboric Ghosthands and Fener
32. Greymane and Gothos
33. Errant and Kilmandaros
34. Raestand Dejim Nebrah
35. Itkovian and Edgewalker
36.Dessimbelackis and Bidithal
37. A'Karonys and Hood
38. LadyEnvy and Draconus

Could probably use some tweaking.

I like both of those ideas. I'm not sure if they will be possible to implement though. As you said just grouping everyone together may be the best way. For now though it might be good to separate them that way. The "group fights" might be hard to do. Cool idea though.

I rearranged a bit as well (putting in spoiler tags just so it isn't so large at first)
Spoiler

Do you guys see anyone missing that you think should definitely be in there?
And I'm sure a lot in Physical should be in both? Who? And why?

Caladan brood is a Tennes and high denul user, he should be in both.
Topper is of the assassin creed that uses magic along with his daggers (see cowl battle), he should be in both.
I can't remember if Cowl uses daggers and such, but he definitely gets in a magical battle with Topper who uses both, so maybe he needs to go in both.
L'oric - doesn't he have a suit of armor and such? not for sure on that one.
Bellurdan rips a demon in half in the first part of GotM with his bare hands.
Korlat is an assassin mage, she should be in both.
Raest and Hood both tend to use their physical strength along with their magical to kill the shit out of stuff, they should be in both.

Would be fun to include squads of Bridgeburners/Bonehunters, but that's only possible if you go the group style.

Yeah I actually moved a lot of those right after I posted it. I think Cowl was head of the Crimson Gaurd Assassins. Forget their title. L'oric was a high mage. Don't know much past that. I don't really remember Raest fighting much beyond him blowing stuff up with magic. And Hood I've not seen fight at all. Again I just finished Reapers Gale. And someone told me Blues from the Crimson Gaurd should be in there too. So I added him.

83 characters so far.

Many if not most of the higher seeded characters will tend to be mixed, not just magic or just physical. If you really wanted to make categories, I would go with;
A). World Breakers. The guys (and girls) who you could never have as a main character, because the very idea of trying to create something that they would have a hard time overcoming is nearly impossible. Includes people like Rake, Dessembrae (in that form) Osserc, Raest with his finnest, Gothos, Hood, etc.

:(. Also rans. The guys (and girls) who would put the fear into any city or small army they happened to come across, but that you can not conceivably imagine them ever beating one of the heavyweights in the first group. Probably the easiest way is to pick a gatekeeper for group A, and then try and think of any way that they could ever under any circumstances beat that gatekeeper. Good examples might be Shadowthrone, the Rope, any of the Elient sisters, or Quickben. All badasses, but can you imagine any of them ever beating Rake?

C). The lightweights. Can still be a bunch of badasses, but they aren't going to make a small army stop in their tracks, and go the other way. Kalam, Rallick Nom, WhiskeyJack, most of the bridgeburners or bonehunters who we get to know, etc.

I'm always all about the ho'd win threads, but its hard to discuss without spoiling 10 more books for you.

A cage match eh....well Urko would Fist everyone who came at him to be honest...
Next up it'd be Tayschrenn or Quick in the mages, if Tay bothered to actually do anything, lazy bumpkin.
Then finally id pick Shadowthrone to win for the gods hehehehe, too sneaky by far.
