Cover art! The Forge of Darkness

I like the colors but it's still a pretty bland, boring and generic cover. Was looking fwd to a cover depicting the forging of Dragnipur under a Kharkanas full moon or some such. Oh well. Book will still rule.

Lack of chains, dragons and/or blood is fail.
It's nice enough but generic.

I despised this cover at first. But it is starting to grow on me. With that said, I wish Malazan had killer artwork like all the post Instrumentalities Glen Cook novels. The Dread Empire and Black Company reprints all have wicked Raymond Swanland covers just like his newer Instrumentalities series.
Let's face it, Malazan is uber-geeky and will never appeal to the masses anyway. Why not go all the way and let us have killer covers?

...because generic fantasy art from a catalog is cheaper for the publisher.

Yes, but you'll find Ray Swanland covers all over the place (including a bunch of Cook's other series from other publishers) and they do start to look the same after a while. (Also, I bet you didn't know that the German editions of MBotF reuse Swanland's Glen Cook cover art!)
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

Which utterly proves my point.
It's hardly rare, but publishers are springing for custom cover art less and less.

The cover is somewhat similar to the Game of Thrones one. I like it though, as these cover arts give off the feeling that the books in question have a darker tone to them.

Sadly true, some art is so generic that it does a series injustice. The art should reflect the tone of the work in question. When it comes to Malazan art I'm mostly satisfied. Well, at least concerning the UK and US cover art.

Could have done without the "HIS EPIC NEW NOVEL"
A bit better, though. Not excellent, but better.

It's a creepier vibe. However, why is there a human skull on the cover of a novel ostensibly about the Tiste Andii?

That's even more generic, hate it. The blue sword looked classy, the new cover makes it look like a book about orcs or something.

For as bland and generic as the first one was, I liked it a lot better.

hmmm, image of the old cover is gone...
new cover is boring, we must needs have fantastical subject matter
perhaps my kid will make me a crayon drawing to use as a dust cover, she likes dinosaurs

HiddenOne. You son of a bitch. You slimy, skulking, low-posting scumbag. You knew it would come to this. Roundabout, maybe. Tortuous, certainly. But here we are, you and me again. I started the train on you so many many hours ago, and now I'm going to finish it. Die HO. Die. This is for last time, and this is for this game too. This is for all the people who died to your backstabbing, treacherous, "I sure don't know what's going on around here" filthy lying, deceitful ways. You son of a bitch. Do you think she can do something like a jhorligg or another Kurald Galain type monster?
I think Erikson would be tickled pink to see that cover image.
